The first Lake Caloosa Clash between Webber International University and Warner University will be decided at 7 p.m. at Legion Field.

Despite what some may think, both Warriors coach Kelly Scott and Royals coach Jeff Schaum look at this as a friendly contest. Away from the field of course.

"These guys are friends off the field," Scott said of the Warner and Webber players. "The ability to compete in the arena is the fun part. Afterward, they go back to being friends. That's what these games are about. I think sometimes the fans don't understand that. There's not a hatred.

"Now, when we get out there, yeah we want to kick their (butt), there's no doubt about that. They feel the same way. But as far as people, these are good people and I think that's what we sometimes forget in these rivalry games," he said. "We don't want it to be one of these things that we see in other sports, where it carries over and away from the ball game. It is, in the ball game, but after that I can guarantee you that me and Jeff will shake hands and we'll go on from there. It's not all the other stuff."

That was the theme of Tuesday morning's hourlong press conference at the Ritz Theatre in Winter Haven. Smiles and jokes were exchanged, and Schaum and Kelly were on their best behavior.

On Saturday, that might change for three hours. But both coaches reaffirmed time and again that's all it'll be. A three-hour war, then handshakes and hugs.

"We were friends before, and we'll be friends after," Schaum said. "That's the way it is, and that's the way our players are."

Each team had players at the event.

Warner brought Steven Stanley, Kareem Givens and Loranza Smith. All three played at Polk County high schools.

Givens was pumped about playing in front family members with and against some of the friends he made while at Lakeland High School.

"It's a great opportunity to play in Polk County with all the hype surrounding the game," he said. "To play at home, it's a great opportunity for your family to come see you. A lot of people can come watch you play and it's good to play against guys that you've played against in high school."

Warner has 13 former Polk County high school players on its roster. Webber has four, including former Victory Christian players Mitch Choquette and Grady Morrell, whom Schaum coached for a couple of years when he was head coach of the Storm.

On the opposite side of the field will be Stanley, who had to give up playing football because of a kidney problem. He's now a coach under Schaum.

"It's exciting to be across the field for the first time against Mitch Choquette and Grady Morrell," Stanley said. "I was in high school all four years with those guys. Mitch is one of my best friends. ... Being a part of history is always fun."

But what the coaches wanted to emphasize was how good it is for student-athletes that Polk County has two colleges with football.

Webber president Keith Wade agreed.

"What you have on my left and on my right is exactly what's right about student athleticism," he said. "We hear a lot of bad things about student athletes, but the tagline of the NAIA is ?champions of character' and they actually are. No matter who wins, it'll be a good game. But at the end of the day, we have young men that have character, and that's what's exciting to me. We have two NAIA teams coming forward, schools that choose to do the right thing because that's where we put the emphasis. I can say that as strongly about Warner as I can about Webber.

"What you have here are a couple of true and honest representations of NAIA schools where character means more than scoreboard. That being said ?GO WEBBER!'?"

He couldn't resist. This is a rivalry after all.

As we continuously advance in this age of modern technology, we need social media networking skills now more than ever before to effectively compete in today?s job market and to generate additional streams of income. Many business owners from Corporate America to mom and pop stores use social media marketing as an important source of business advertisement. Because social media advertisement is far less expensive than prime time television ads, many businesses utilize web content to advertise their services and products. For startup businesses, it is far more cost effective and economically sensible to use social media networking sites to generate buzz for your business.

One minute of prime time television ads could cost thousands of dollars, which many small business owners may not be able to afford. But posting a Youtube video featuring your business will cost you absolutely nothing. To effectively maximize your customer base, you must connect with potential customers online. Never underestimate the power of social media networking when it comes to gaining new customers and retaining existing customers. If you are serious about building your online reputation as a business owner, you must have quality business profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Dailymotion, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Myspace, WordPress, Blogger, Digg, HootSuite, StumbleUpon, Delicious, Ning and more. As a legitimate business owner, it is no longer enough to have your business listed in the Yellow Pages. You must operate and maintain quality social networking sites featuring your business and the services/products you offer. This is where my expertise as a web content writer and social media manager comes into play.

I perform the skills that many entrepreneurs either do not possess the time or skill set for, which is manage the company?s online presence. Most business owners prefer to hire social media experts to maintain and update web content for their business, and utilize social networking sites to engage the public about the products and services they offer.

Through Internet marketing, you must be able to optimize your online presence and build your company portfolio one click at a time. When it comes to building your customer base, make sure you provide a product that your customers actually want and can afford. In today?s economy, if your prices are not competitive, consumers will quickly move on to the next competitor who has affordable pricing. Once you know your company?s niche, it is easy to identify what products or services you?re offering that caters specifically to your customer base.

Most smart business owners know that a great company reputation is very important in maintaining a financially healthy and successful business. One bad review on Facebook or Twitter can reduce your customer base, jeopardize your profits, and threaten the future of your business. Most successful companies utilize social media experts to manage and build the company?s online reputation, because they know negative reviews are bad for business. Your company?s reputation means everything. A great reputation makes customers feel comfortable in trusting a company?s services and products.

To be a financially successful business owner, one must utilize every online marketing tool to effectively build the company?s brand. This can be achieved through search engine optimization, generating traffic to the company website, and online marketing campaigns through networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest, etc. With very little traffic to your website, your customer base will be small.

As social media continues to advance with increasing technology in video streaming, web conferencing and instant messaging, companies are finding cheap and cost effective ways to utilize contractors for jobs that do not require them to commute to the office, punch a clock, and be on the company payroll permanently. The contractor can be utilized for a specific period of time and for cheaper wages than someone who is a permanent employee. The contractor can work from the comfort of his/her own home and/or report less to the work location. Many companies are now hiring contractors to handle all of their Information Technology needs. Contractors replace company workers for whom corporate owners spend millions of dollars on health insurance coverage and pensions. Many companies have grown richer by outsourcing labor and cutting employee costs. The cheaper the labor, the more a business can maximize profits. Business owners constantly look for ways to cut expenditures. After all, what?s the point of being in business when expenditures exceed profits? The economically responsible action for any business owner whose expenditures exceed his or her profits is to slash company costs by laying off employees, renegotiating pension contracts, providing cheaper health insurance group coverage to employees, and outsourcing labor to contractors.

Information Technology is continually changing with new web infrastructures and technological advances. Today, I am able to connect with someone on the other side of the world through Skype and other instant messaging services. Who knows how far this technology will take us?

Social media has shaped the very ideas that produced the newly invented networking sites like Pinterest and HootSuite. Businesses should never overlook less popular sites for the more favorable ones. If a business does not have a strong customer base, it is possibly due to poor advertising, lack of a strong online presence and negative reviews. Internet marketing is far more effective than television ads. So beware of your company?s online reputation, because this could mean the difference between a thriving business and a business that is barely surviving.

It is amazing how much a morning workout can improve your entire day. I used to have a difficult time waking up early enough to get a workout in until I realized how much better my day is when I make the commitment to get up and moving. Of course, whenever you can find time during the day to exercise is great, getting your heart rate up in the morning has many benefits.

?

1.?????It is easier to stick to a regiment if you exercise early in the morning. Things come up during the day that may prevent you from getting to the gym after work or going for that evening jog. It is easier to keep the commitment if you go to the gym before other obligations arise. If I wake up and go workout before I start my daily activities, I am less likely to let another activity get in the way like hanging out with my daughter, doing household chores, or even going out for happy hour. You may have great intentions to make it to that 4:30 yoga class, but chances are something else will come up.

2.?????Working out in the morning jumpstarts your metabolism and keeps it up throughout the day. Not only is it a metabolic booster, you are more likely to be conscious of eating healthy if you have already worked out. Your body will naturally crave the right foods to replenish, and you will be less likely to overeat.

3.?????Waking up at the same time every day makes it easier to wake up and helps regulate your entire nervous and endocrine systems.

4.?????Exercise elevates your mood and your mental sharpness. You will actually be more productive and energetic!

T.J. Grant wants to scream, ?Hey, don?t forget about me!?

Dozens of UFC fighters have learned the same bitter lesson over the last 12-plus years: If you don't show up to the post for a title shot when you get one, there is no guarantee you'll get it in the future.

Lightweight contender T.J. Grant is the latest fighter to find himself in that position.

Grant earned a shot at then-champion Benson Henderson's title on May 25 when he knocked out Gray Maynard in just 127 seconds at UFC 160 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

But Grant suffered a concussion in training for Henderson, and on July 12, pulled out of the title bout that was set for Aug. 31 at UFC 164 in Milwaukee. He was replaced by Anthony Pettis and Pettis, of course, delivered a superstar-like performance in submitting Henderson in the first round.

Pettis quickly called out featherweight champion Jose Aldo after the bout. That left Grant shrieking and hoping he gets his opportunity. He told MMA Fighting's Chuck Mindenhall he thought he would be ready to fight by December. The UFC has a show on Dec. 28 in Las Vegas, but it is already topped by a pair of title fights: The middleweight rematch between Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva and the women's title rematch between Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate.

That makes it unlikely that UFC president Dana White would put a third fight on that card.

Grant, though, wanted everyone to remember that he earned the opportunity and doesn't want to lose it because of an unfortunate injury.

I'm pretty sure Aldo is a little banged up as well right now. My opinion -- I'm a fan, and I love watching UFC fights. I watch all of them, whether they're people I'm potentially fighting or not, I enjoy it. Pettis against Aldo is an exciting fight.

But, hey, I just won my last fight in two minutes. I knocked the [Gray Maynard]?out. I knocked the guy [Matt Wiman] out before that. I feel like I've earned it. I feel like I'm the guy. I've been in the UFC a long time. I've never really gotten the push that I feel like I need, but I've also built a lot of experience in fighting and haven't been in the spotlight, which is nice, too. But I'm ready to be there and I'm ready to go out there. Give me the opportunity man. I feel like I've earned it.

Whether he gets it or not is up to UFC president Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva. The UFC's history in the past has been not to have a newly crowned champion go chasing another division's champ right away, but the Aldo-Pettis match has a bit of history.

Pettis was supposed to challenge Aldo for the featherweight title on Aug. 3 at UFC 163, but he injured his right knee and had to pull out. But then his knee healed faster than expected -- I hear you, all you conspiracy theorists -- and when Grant pulled out of his fight with Henderson, the UFC tabbed Pettis to replace him.

Grant's probably in a good position to get the next shot, particularly since Pettis injured his left knee Saturday and may be out for a while. But with Grant probably not available until the new year, that's no sure thing.

This is a situation that bears watching.

In Black America Podcast: Millionaire Interrupted: NBA Player Turns Career-Ending Injury into Inspirational Business Triumph

    In Black America

On this edition of In Black America, producer/host John L. Hanson Jr. speaks with Jonathan Bender former professional basketball player. When Bender skipped college to go?play for the Pacers in 1999, he became an instant millionaire. Not just millionaire, but multi-millionaire earning nearly $7 million for his first three years on the team. For a baller coming straight out of a town like Picayune, Mississippi, even $1 million would have been an extraordinary amount of money?let alone seven. Overnight he had literally become the richest man from his hometown. What?s more, only a few basketball superstars had made the transition straight from high school to the NBA successfully, the likes of Moses Malone, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant. While the odds were seemingly against him, Bender realized early success in the NBA. Then his knees started to give out.

So debilitating was the pain in his knees that, after 7 years in the league, he took a 4-year retirement. Not one to sit idle or suffer helplessly, during this time Bender worked with scientists and engineers to painstakingly develop a first-of-its-kind rehabilitative product to address joint pain and physical limitation problems that, even today, cannot be rectified with any other physical therapy intervention of device on the market. While using his own product prototype?now coined the ?JB Intensive Trainer??Bender became fit enough to re-enter the NBA, where he played for another year with the New York Knicks. Amazingly, when the team doctors did strengthening tests on Bender, they discovered he had the strongest lower extremities on the team! But, this time around things had changed. Bender had the entrepreneurial bug and the game just didn?t mean as much to him as it used to. So, at the ripe age of 29 and to the surprise of many, Bender again retired and the former NBA hopeful seemed to be at a career crossroad.

Suddenly the ?boy wonder? who had shocked everyone by making the top-5 of the ?99 Draft was yesterday?s news. Fan support and media attention was no more. Without an MBA, let alone a college degree, he was already at a distinct disadvantage. But, Bender had always been one to beat the odds. And so he did?again.
