Kid Koala bundles working cardboard gramophone with new album, spurs on budding turntablists video

If you've been enough of a Kid Koala fan to have heard his original Scratchcratchratchatch mixtape, you'll remember a sample that mentioned building a "finger-powered record player." Kid Koala, also known as Eric San, certainly remembers -- buy the Limited Edition of his recently launched 12 Bit Blues album and you'll get your own functional, build-it-yourself cardboard gramophone along with a playable disc. The only further requirements are a sewing pin and some hand power. It's cheaper than tracking down the real thing, and a nod both to San's turntablist style as well as the back-to-basics nature of the music. We call it clever and potentially inspiring; just remember that you'll want some proper equipment before you DJ any house parties.

Investing in gold and silver ? Alternative Outlook

This year, September has been an outstanding month for gold bugs. The Federal Reserve embarked on another tranche of money-printing in the form of its third round of quantitative easing, potentially debasing the value of the world?s major reserve currency, the dollar. The European Central Bank (ECB) also announced an ?unlimited? bond buying programme, possibly hinting at money printing to support it, if needs be.

According to Angelos Damaskos, chief executive of Sector Investment Managers and manager of the Junior Gold fund, these moves from the world?s two major central banks should prove positive for the gold price. ?Following recent announcements indicating further money-printing by the Fed and the ECB it should not be surprising that the price of gold has resumed its uptrend, on course for its 12th successive annual gain. Importantly, it has broken the psychologically important level of $1,700/oz, widely seen by technical analysts as [a] key ?resistance? [level].?

Mr Damaskos warns that the Fed?s decision to introduce another round of quantitative easing could further stoke inflation and devalue the dollar, sparking renewed interest from investors seeking safety.

?This move is also excellent news for gold mining stocks that have been sold off and unloved by investors for over a year now. We are in the early stages of the next major re-rating for gold mining equities as a sector, particularly smaller to middle capitalisation companies. The share prices of those companies with strong balance sheets, good management, growing production and reserves are likely to outperform,? he says.

Alongside its use in jewellery and certain industrial processes, gold is effectively a replacement reserve currency, used to hedge against weakness in the purchasing power of other reserve currencies ? most notably the dollar. As a result, it is often used by investors as a hedge against inflation.

In spite of such advantages, gold and other commodities have proved volatile for investors in recent years. Prior to the Fed and ECB announcements, Sheridan Admans, investment research manager at The Share Centre, observes that gold had weakened along with other commodities as the eurozone helped drag the world economy into a less inflationary scenario.

?For most of 2012 energy and hard commodities, gold aside, have been weaker as many European economies slip back into recession and even Germany, the powerhouse of Europe, has seen a slow-down in growth. This has also had an impact on China as weaker demand from Europe and the credit crisis continues to constrain money supply,? he says.

?Over the long term the emerging market growth story should continue to offer potential for investors. As these economies develop infrastructure to compete in the global market, this is likely to have an impact on the demand for commodities in the years to come. However, the volatility the sector exposes investors to is not going to go away as the credit crisis rumbles on.?

In the broader commodities sector, Mr Admans cites the JPMorgan Natural Resources fund as an investment portfolio worthy of attention from investors.

?Commodity valuations are looking better than they have for some time, so taking the long-term view of five years plus, investors should see some rewards from investing in a fund that has exposure to this sector,? he adds.

?This fund invests in a diversified portfolio of companies that are exposed to global resources and energy. It invests across three spectrums, with the portfolio roughly divided between gold, base metals and energy. It holds only equities and does not invest in direct commodities or exchange traded funds.?

As an investment, gold also faces more direct competition from other precious metals such as silver and platinum. When it comes to precious metals, investors usually see gold as the natural ?go to? investment. However, analysis carried out by Lloyds TSB reveals that the price of silver has outperformed that of gold over the past 10 years to the end of August.

Like many other areas of the resources marketplace, silver has had to evolve over time and has moved from being used only in jewellery and in the photography industry to profiting from applications in a range of industries, including solar panels, computers and security tags.

This growth in demand has been the main driver of the rising share price of silver ? something commodity analysts expect to continue as the demand for the metal continues to outstrip supply.

Overall, when it comes to allocating part of a portfolio to natural resources ? whether it be through exchange traded funds, open ended vehicles or by trading on price movements ? it is important that investors look beyond the obvious hedging benefits of gold. Although past performance is no guide to the future, it is possible that alternatives like silver will continue to outshine the yellow metal for some time to come.

China's corruption crackdown takes shine off luxury boom

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Luxury brands banking on a China rebound to boost sales may be in for an unpleasant surprise: weak demand in the world's second largest luxury market may last longer than the economic slowdown as Beijing cracks down on conspicuous consumption.

China is sensitive to anything that raises suspicions of corruption, especially after the scandal involving Bo Xilai and his emerald-wearing wife Gu Kailai marred this year's once-a-decade leadership transition.

The government imposed a "frugal working style" rule on its civil servants, which goes into effect on October 1, barring them from spending public money on lavish banquets or fancy cars, and from accepting expensive gifts. Gift giving is considered a sign of respect in Chinese culture, and has been a reliable source of demand for the world's top luxury brands.

A string of high-profile incidents, including a high-speed Ferrari crash reportedly involving the son of a senior public official and a local government official photographed flaunting luxury watches beyond the reach of his salary, have enraged many Chinese who have taken to the blogosphere to vent their anger.

Chinese police inspectors are now studying up on how to recognize luxury brands to help them expose corruption, according to local media.

"Luxury products are highly expensive and civil servants, whose salaries are about 5,000 yuan ($790.6) a month, cannot afford them," China Daily reported on Friday. "So officials who possess luxury products should give convincing explanations on how they got them."

Luxury brands were already struggling with a slowing economy and a bit of flashy fashion fatigue as Chinese shoppers shun flamboyance in favor of understated displays of wealth.

Beijing's crackdown suggests that even if economic growth starts to recover later this year, as many economists predict, luxury demand may lag.

"There is definitely a general moving away from the bling and the gold taps. This is a permanent shift," said Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman of the Hurun Report, a Shanghai-based luxury publishing house which compiles China's Rich List.

Hoogewerf said while many Chinese consumers are pulling back on spending because of a weakening economy, there is also a heightened sensitivity surrounding luxury purchases.

PRADA'S TURN?

British fashion house Burberry Group Plc's warning on September 11 that its sales growth in China was far slower than expected spooked luxury investors and raised concerns that the entire sector was in danger of stumbling.

Its Italian rival, Hong Kong-listed Prada SpA, releases half-year earnings later on Monday and investors are looking to the company to provide a clearer picture of the state of Chinese demand.

Analysts have mostly remained upbeat on Prada's outlook, eyeing strong market share gains and good brand perception, but its shares are down 7.5 percent since Burberry's warning.

There are some signs that Beijing's "frugal" campaign, announced in July, is already hurting luxury demand.

In Hong Kong, a popular luxury shopping destination for mainland Chinese, July sales rose just 3.8 percent from a year earlier, slowing from June's 11 percent year-on-year growth. August figures are scheduled for release on October 4.

Gift giving is a cultural norm in China, seen as a way of showing respect. It is not unusual for civil servants to receive expensive bottles of alcohol, jewellery or lavish meals from business leaders in the community.

Since Beijing's crackdown was announced, demand for typical gift-giving products such as watches and wine has faded.

Jebsen, a distributor for premium brands in China and one of the largest Porsche dealership groups in the world, said its Porsche sales have remained healthy, up 28 percent in August from a year earlier.

But its Hong Kong Bordeaux wine sales are down 25 percent in value and 6 percent in volume. Hong Kong has been a favorite entry point to China for high-end Grand Cru wines.

To be sure, China still has plenty of people willing and able to splash out on fancy goods, and Hong Kong and the gambling enclave of Macau remain shopping paradises.

At U.S. billionaire Steve Wynn's casino in Macau, which houses high-end brands such as Louis Vuitton, Piaget and Dior, retail business is still solid with sales well up over the same period a year ago, said a Wynn spokesperson.

Outlet shopping villages are also becoming popular for Chinese consumers who benefit from hefty tax savings.

Desiree Bollier, chief executive of Value Retail, which has nine outlet villages in Europe, said Chinese customers are increasingly opting for the smaller niche European brands offering unique products they cannot find at home.

"Demand is not diminishing but evolving - the spectrum is becoming broader and more sophisticated," she said.
