RIM: It's okay, we have superheroes

It's a common human trait that, when faced with a series of calamities, the brain will retreat into a fantasy world in which everything is the exact opposite of reality. Could this be the inspiration for RIM's four new cartoon characters, which the company hopes will spread its "Be Bold" marketing message? The pattern certainly seems to fit. From left to right: there's GoGo Girl, who "saves the day with a brilliant strategy" (translation: we don't have a strategy). Then comes Justin Steele, who's "always ready to stick up for his friends" (translation: we don't have friends). Trudy Foreal "isn't afraid to call it as she sees it" (translation: our shareholders are complaining). Finally, the adventurous Max Stone is "able to jump out of a plane" (translation: we're going to crash).

Update: RIM has provided a little update stating that this is "not a new ad campaign." Still, it's fun to imagine what might have been.

Yahoo Finance kills app for beleaguered RIM's BlackBerry ...

Jan 30, 2012 - 01:38 PM EST ? AAPL: 453.146 (+5.866, +1.31%) | NASDAQ: 2811.01 (-5.54, -0.2%)

?On Friday afternoon, Internet giant Yahoo announced that it was decommissioning 10 of its mobile apps, saying on a company blog that ??Our plan is to keep moving, to keep innovating, and to continuously measure and scrutinize what?s working and what isn?t ? so we can make room for great new products,?? Michael Comeau writes for Minyanville. ?Now I can understand Yahoo pulling back to reassess its app strategy on the ultra-competitive Apple iOS and Google Android platforms. However, I was truly surprised to see the company pull the Yahoo Finance app for Research In Motion?s Blackberry.?

?I remember a day when Blackberry was standard-issue equipment for all the soldiers in corporate America, a crowd that, as you can imagine, would be very likely to demand financial news and data on the go. Yahoo Finance is one of just a handful of Web properties that have stood the test of time. Think about it. Very few of the content sites that dominated in the late 1990s still have kingpin status today, and Yahoo Finance is one of them,? Comeau writes. ?Its position at the absolute top of the finance vertical hasn?t ever been even remotely threatened by competitors, including Google.?

?The fact that the dominant Web finance property is pulling away from the business-centric Blackberry platform is truly a sign of the times. Given that, maybe I shouldn?t have been surprised by Yahoo?s move,? Comeau writes. ?from an anecdotal perspective, I?ve been awfully surprised at the increasing number of ?suits? I see around New York City sporting iPhones and iPads. And when I say suits, I don?t mean young, dashing folks in fashion or media ? I?m talking about Fortune 500 types in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Again, a crowd that would seem to want financial news and data on the go. And Yahoo [Finance] just decided that crowd isn?t big enough to support [on BlackBerry].?

Strike on summit day shows task at hand (AP)

BRUSSELS ? German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other European leaders meeting for a summit will only have to look out of the window to see the biggest problem with their steady diet of austerity and belt-tightening to fix the financial crisis: disgruntled workers organizing a nationwide strike to protest the direction in which Europe is heading.

That is, if the 27 government leaders can even get to European Union headquarters in time for Monday's meeting.

Belgium's three main unions are joining hands as of late Sunday in a 24-hour strike to protest national budgetary measures that have in part been imposed on Belgium by the EU. If the country hadn't met cost-cutting targets, financial sanctions would have been imposed.

Instead of a beacon for a better future, many Europeans are starting to see the EU as a death knell, one that is suffocating them with austerity instead of supporting them with job-boosting measures.

"We fully understand the sentiments of all Europeans, especially here in Belgium, where we are so close, the frustrations and doubt and the worries," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said.

The question is where to find money to boost growth when debt is preoccupying everyone. The austerity measures raise taxes and cut benefits for hundreds of thousands of workers in Belgium. And Monday's strike has been mirrored in many other member states.

Overall, 23 million people are jobless across the EU, 10 percent of the active population.

"Europe has to offer jobs, social protection and perspective for the future. Otherwise it risks losing the support of its citizens," said the strike manifesto of the ACV union.

For Monday, Thalys and Eurostar bullet trains to Brussels have already been cut, one airport has been closed and Brussels international airport is expecting heavy disruption. Contingency plans have been made to get the 27 European leaders to the center of Brussels, but even then convoys could end up in choking traffic if workers block the capital's beltway during morning rush hour.

No major demonstrations are planned but the union leaders will head to the summit site to deliver a symbolic "eurobond" ? pressing for a joint pooling of debt in the eurozone, a measure that has been steadfastly opposed by Germany.

The noise of workers and lack of growth is having a profound impact on Monday's summit.

Even if the debt crisis in Greece will take center stage for part of the meeting, "at the same time, we need to take active measures to enhance growth and competitiveness and above all create jobs," EU president Herman van Rompuy said.

The leaders, though, will be happy to learn that Greece and investors who own its bonds have reached a tentative deal to significantly reduce the country's debt and pave the way for it to receive a much-needed euro130 billion bailout.

Negotiators for the investors announced the agreement Saturday and said it could become final within the next week. If the agreement works as planned, it will help Greece remain solvent and help Europe avoid a blow to its already weak financial system, even though banks and other bond investors will have to accept multibillion-dollar losses.

Still, it doesn't resolve the weakening economic conditions in Greece and other European nations as they rein in spending to get their debts under control.

Under the agreement, investors holding euro206 billion in Greek bonds would exchange them for new bonds worth 60 percent less.

Without an agreement, bankruptcy would loom large for Greece and raise a big question mark over the euro currency shared by 17 nations.

Another divisive issue is a German proposal that debt-ridden Greece temporarily cede sovereignty over tax and spending decisions to a powerful eurozone budget commissioner before it can secure further bailouts.

The idea was quickly rejected by Barroso's Commission and the government in Athens, both insisting the budget remain a national prerogative.

At the same time, the EU also has to deal with an increasingly tough labor market.

Spain's brutal unemployment rate has soared to nearly 23 percent and closed in on 50 percent for those under age 25, leaving more than 5 million people ? or almost one out of every four ? out of work as the country slides toward recession.

To help jump-start the EU toward more growth and employment, the EU Commission is proposing to the summit leaders to redirect euro82 billion in existing funds toward countries in dire need of help to fix their labor market.

Obama administration bolsters homeowner lifeline (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Obama administration on Friday expanded its main foreclosure prevention program and pushed to open it up to loans backed by mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, a move that could meet resistance from their regulator.

In a joint announcement, the Treasury and Housing and Urban Development departments proposed using money from the Home Affordable Modification Program to provide incentives for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to reduce loan principal.

Government-controlled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac own or guarantee about half of all U.S. home loans, and their participation in principal reduction could greatly expand the reach of the $29.9 billion HAMP program.

The proposal piles pressure on their regulator to allow the two government-sponsored enterprises, or GSEs, to do more for borrowers who have been hurt by declining home value.

The regulator has barred them from reducing principal out of concern it would raise costs to taxpayers, who have already dished out $169 billion to prop the firms up.

The depressed housing market is a concern for President Barack Obama, who faces re-election in November.

Obama made clear in his State of the Union address on Tuesday he would continue to press for more aggressive action to help homeowners. His position was in contrast to Republicans who are opposed to government intervention in the market.

As part of its announcement on Friday, the administration also said it was extending the life of the HAMP program for one additional year through 2013, and that it would open up the program to borrowers with higher debt-to-income levels.

Only about $3 billion has been spent of the $29 set aside for HAMP.

In addition, the administration said it was tripling the incentives paid to lenders who reduce mortgage principal.

Investors who rent out properties would also be able to access mortgage aid under the revamped program.

REGULATOR NEEDS TO SIGN OFF

For the proposal on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac principal writedowns to work, their regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, would need to first sign off.

However, FHFA Acting Director Edward DeMarco has said allowing for principal reduction on GSE loans would undercut his mandate to protect taxpayers.

"To encourage the GSEs to offer this assistance to its underwater borrowers, Treasury has notified the GSE's regulator, FHFA, that it will pay principal reduction incentives to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac if they allow servicers to forgive principal in conjunction with a HAMP modification," Treasury Assistant Secretary Timothy Massad said in a statement.

Obama said on Tuesday he planned to send legislation to Congress as soon as next week aimed at helping all homeowners take advantage of record-low borrowing costs through refinancing.

So far, the administration's series of mortgage relief programs that were introduced in 2009 have fallen far short of expectations.

When the administration launched HAMP in 2009, it expected as many as 4 million loans would be modified. So far, only about 900,000 households have won permanent mortgage modifications. The administration says those modifications have provided savings of about $500 every month for those borrowers.

The HAMP program, which draws from the Treasury Department's financial bailout fund, pays mortgage servicers to rewrite loan terms to reduce monthly payments.

The administration did not specify how much it would pay Fannie and Freddie to participate in HAMP.

Gingrich ad labels Romney 'dishonest man'

(AP) ? TITLE: "What Kind of Man?"

LENGTH: 1 minute

AIRING: On broadcast and cable stations in Florida.

KEY IMAGES: The ad begins with footage of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who ran against Romney in the 2008 GOP presidential contest, talking into the camera. "If a man's dishonest to get a job, he'll be dishonest on the job," Huckabee says.

Downbeat music starts playing. A narrator intones darkly as a blurry image of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney slowly comes into focus. "What kind of man would mislead, distort, and deceive just to win an election?" the male voice asks. "This man would. Mitt Romney."

As a series of photos of Romney from recent debates flash across the screen, a bright red "false" stamp flashes across a different picture of Romney, who appears pained.

"Romney said he has always voted Republican when he had the opportunity," the narrator says. "But in the 1992 Massachusetts primary, Romney had the chance to vote for George H.W. Bush or Pat Buchanan but he voted for a liberal Democrat instead."

The narrator continues: "Romney said his investments in Fannie and Freddie were in a blind trust. But as reported in the National Journal, Romney earned tens of thousands of dollars from investments NOT in a blind trust. Romney denied seeing a false ad his campaign used to attack Newt Gingrich. But Romney's own campaign paid for the ad ... Romney's own voice is on the ad approving the content.

"If we can't trust Romney in a debate, how can we trust him on anything?"

As the final line is read, a picture of Romney with his head bowed appears with text next to it that is superimposed over a shot of the White House. It reads, ".... and that's why he would lose to Barack Obama."

The ad signs off with "Paid for by Newt 2012."

ANALYSIS: From disappointing losses in Iowa and New Hampshire to a soaring victory in South Carolina, the level of vitriol in Gingrich's attacks on Romney has waxed and waned. After scaling back his barbs in two debates, Gingrich has seen his numbers slip. Opinion polls show a close race in Florida, with a slight advantage for Romney. This ad dramatically escalates Gingrich's attacks on Romney.

It is by far Gingrich's sharpest, most personal attack on the former Massachusetts governor to date. "What Kind of Man?" also seems to signal that Gingrich will fight bitterly for the GOP nomination.

The ad curiously begins with Huckabee, currently a TV personality and popular conservative Republican figure. Gingrich may be hoping to remind viewers that, at least four years ago, Romney's fellow presidential aspirants could barely contain their anger at him. Huckabee hasn't endorsed in this year's contest.

The former Arkansas governor quickly disputed the use of his image in the ad. In an interview on Fox News Channel's "Your World," Huckabee said he was not referring to Romney specifically in the footage and did not approve of Gingrich's use of the footage in the ad. Huckabee said he would "love for him" to pull the ad because he hasn't endorsed anyone in the primary.

As a narrator takes over, the ad makes a series of claims that Romney could justifiably dispute.

It alleges that Romney voted for Democrats when he could have voted for Republicans. While this is technically true of the 1992 Massachusetts primary, Romney has said repeatedly that he was a registered independent so he could have more influence in a state where Democrats typically dominate. Romney has maintained that he has always voted for Republicans in general elections, and voted in the Democratic primary so he could vote for a weaker candidate and improve the GOP's chances.

As Gingrich's ad asserts, National Journal did report that Romney's investments in mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were not in a blind trust. And Romney's personal financial disclosure forms show he owned between $250,001 and $500,000 in the Federated Government Obligation Fund, which contained mutual-fund notes of politically sensitive Fannie and Freddie. An addendum to Romney' disclosure forms says certain assets, including the federated fund, were outside the scope of his blind trust. The investment was not on Romney's 2007 financial form, making it a relatively new one coming just as the housing and financial crises were hitting Americans full force.

Romney and his campaign have, nonetheless, denied that he had any knowledge of his large investment in the fund.

The final factual claim, that Romney says he had no knowledge of an ad from his campaign against Gingrich, is true. Also true is that Romney's voice can be heard at the end of the ad, approving its message. But there is no way to determine whether Romney saw the ad before his campaign put it on the air.

Beyond the ad's specific claims, Gingrich has chosen to take an unusually personal tone that effectively calls his opponent untrustworthy and a liar. That's a sign both of Gingrich's frustration and the high stakes. Both Gingrich and Romney believe a Florida victory could catapult them to the Republican nomination.

The ad is also a variation on a theme Gingrich has tried to push about Romney. Gingrich's campaign wants voters to see Romney as a flip-flopper and someone who will say anything to get elected. But this ad is stripped of even a patina of civility.

As Romney has done before him, Gingrich also raises the specter of a second term for President Barack Obama as the consequence of voting for his opponent. Both candidates seem to be talking past each other on the issue of electability. In Iowa and New Hampshire, Romney was viewed by voters as more electable. In South Carolina, where Gingrich jolted the race with a victory, he was viewed as the candidate with the best chance of beating Obama.

One thing both campaigns seem to agree on is Obama's effectiveness as a bogeyman in GOP primaries.

ZTE Optik dual-core tablet eyed up by Sprint, $100 on contract

Underwhelmed by the ZTE tablet spotted yesterday? Perhaps the promise of a Honeycomb-decked seven-incher from Sprint will win your tablet hungry dollars. Advertising materials leaked over at Android Police, revealing that the previously unseen slab will arrive next month both on contract ($100) and off ($349). The 1.2GHz dual-core Optik wields a 5 megapixel camera on the back, paired with a front-facing 2 megapixel shooter, while there's a respectable chunk of storage (16GB), expandable by micro-SD. Although there may be more eye-opening propositions when it comes Android tabs, those on the hunt for one that won't claim a heavy chunk of your paycheck and still pack some respectable technical specs may have found an interesting new contender.

[Thanks David]

Durable goods data points to economic momentum (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? New orders for U.S. manufactured goods rose in December and a gauge of future business investment rebounded, showing the economy ended the year with more momentum than previously thought.

Other reports on Thursday showed new claims for jobless benefits rose moderately last week, suggesting the labor market was healing only slowly, while new U.S. single-family home sales unexpectedly fell in December.

The Commerce Department said orders for durable goods climbed 3.0 percent last month, boosted by a surge in aircraft orders. Economists had forecast orders rising 2.0 percent.

"There's some momentum here," said Jacob Oubina, an economist at RBC Capital Markets in New York. "Heading into the first quarter, the momentum is going to be pretty decent."

Durable goods range from toasters to big-ticket items like aircraft which are meant to last three years and more.

The data suggested U.S. companies could be growing more willing to invest the $2 trillion pile of cash they amassed in recent years. The U.S. Federal Reserve warned on Wednesday that business investment had cooled.

Orders for capital goods outside defense and excluding aircraft, which are a proxy for business spending plans, climbed a steeper-than-expected 2.9 percent. They had declined the previous two months.

Also, shipments of orders within that category, which go into the calculation of gross domestic product, rose 2.9 percent after declining 1.0 percent in November.

SLOW HEALING

The overall increase in orders was buoyed by an 18.9 percent jump in orders for civilian aircraft. Boeing received 287 orders for aircraft during the month, according to the plane maker's website, up from 96 in November.

Investors in U.S. stocks appeared to take little notice of the data, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index (.SPX) off slightly in early afternoon. U.S. Treasury debt prices rose as fears grew that the European debt crisis was heating up again.

In a separate report, the Conference Board said its index of future U.S. economic activity rose to a five-month high in December as labor market conditions improved.

The Labor Department data showed new U.S. claims for unemployment benefits rose last week but the underlying trend continued to point to improving labor market conditions.

Initial claims for state unemployment aid increased 21,000 to 377,000. The four-week moving average for initial claims, which provides a better view of trends, fell 2,500 to 377,500.

"We're still very much established below 400,000, continuing to suggest that there is modest improvement in the labor market," said Lindsey Piegza, an economist at FTN Financial in New York.

On Wednesday, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the U.S. central bank could do more to help growth if the economy falters, and the Fed indicated interest rates would likely remain near zero until late 2014.

Among the darker clouds looming over the U.S. economy is a sovereign debt crisis in Europe that is widely seen triggering a recession in the euro zone.

Greece was due to resume tortuous negotiations on a debt swap with private creditors in Athens on Thursday, with the European Central Bank thrown into the mix after IMF chief Christine Lagarde said public sector holders of Greek debt may need to take losses too.

Increased consumer spending and efforts by companies to restock their shelves likely led the U.S. economy to accelerate at the end of 2011 although many economists expect some of that strength to wane early this year.

A report due Friday is expected to show the economy grew at a 3.0 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, up from 1.8 percent in the previous period.

The Commerce Department also released a report showing new U.S. single-family home sales unexpectedly fell in December for the first time in four months, while the median home price dropped, dampening some of the hopes the housing sector will boost the economy this year.

The housing market remains constrained by high unemployment, falling prices and an oversupply of unsold homes following a bust that triggered the 2007-09 recession.

Still, there were a record low 157,000 new homes on the market last month. That could fuel additional speculation the housing sector was on the cusp of a recovery.

Lockheed order backlog to cushion tough 2012 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N), the Pentagon's largest supplier, forecast broadly flat sales and operating profit for 2012, with a record high order backlog helping it to cope with cuts in U.S. defense spending.

Bethesda-based Lockheed, which is developing the F-35 fighter jet for the U.S. military and eight international partners, reported on Thursday lower sales and earnings for the fourth quarter of 2011, but said it received $19.8 billion in orders that boosted its backlog to a record $80.7 billion.

Fourth-quarter sales dropped nearly five percent to $12.2 billion from $12.8 billion a year ago, said Lockheed, which also builds missiles, coastal warships, satellites and transport planes for the U.S. government.

Revenues for the full year rose nearly 2 percent to $46.5 billion from $45.7 billion a year earlier, It forecast revenues between $45 billion and $46 billion in 2012.

Chairman and Chief Executive Bob Stevens said the company had a strong year financially due to its continued focus on executing U.S. and international programs, but faced more uncertainty in 2012, given the U.S. government's plan to cut defense spending by $487 billion over the next decade.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is expected to explain some of the major decisions in the fiscal 2013 defense budget later Thursday, including plans to put off production of 179 additional F-35 fighter jets over the next five years.

"We will need to remain agile in 2012 given the uncertainties ahead, but I am confident that our workforce and diversified portfolio will enable us to continue to deliver value to our customers and shareholders," Stevens said.

Net earnings from continuing operations dropped 15 percent to $698 million in the fourth quarter from $821 million a year earlier, edging up slightly to $2.67 billion for the full year from $2.61 billion. The results reflected higher pension expense adjustments, a decrease in research and development (R&D) tax credits, and premiums on the early extinguishments of debt.

Earnings on per share basis from continuing operations fell to $2.14 in the fourth quarter, down from $2.28 a year earlier, but still above analyst estimates of $1.94.

Operating profit fell slightly to $3.98 billion for the full year from $4.05 billion in 2010, and would likely fall in that same range in 2012, the company said.

Separately, U.S. defense contractor Raytheon said on Thursday it expected adjusted earnings to fall 5-8 percent this year, as it reported a 12 percent rise in adjusted fourth-quarter earnings per share.

Poll: Perry's Texas ratings down after failed run (AP)

AUSTIN, Texas ? Gov. Rick Perry's approval rating in Texas has fallen to a 10-year low since his failed presidential bid, putting him on a par with President Barack Obama in his own home state.

More than half of the people who responded to a statewide poll don't want Perry to run for another term as governor and 45 percent said his failed campaign for the Republican nomination for president hurt Texas' image.

The poll conducted Jan. 21-24 was conducted for The Dallas Morning News, the Austin American Statesman, the San Antonio Express-News, the Houston Chronicle and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. The newspapers published the poll results Thursday.

Forty percent of Texans approve of the job he's doing as governor, a 10-point drop from a year ago and less than Obama's 43 percent statewide approval rating, according to the poll. The Fort Worth Star Telegram said the Democratic president's approval ratings have showed little change in the past two years.

Another 40 percent said they disapprove of the job Perry is doing.

The poll found 53 percent said they don't want Perry to run for a fourth full term in 2014. Since ended his campaign last week, Perry staff have said he could run for another term as governor.

According to the poll, Perry has lost ground among Republicans in a state dominated by the GOP. His approval rating among Republicans dipped from 73 percent to 60 percent, and among independents he fell from nearly half to 27 percent. Until earlier this month at the Iowa caucuses, Perry had never lost an election.

Perry ran for president as a socially conservative candidate and he boasted about his job-creation efforts and the economy in his home state. But he stumbled badly with several flubs on the campaign trail, including his notorious "oops" moment in a nationally televised debate when he couldn't remember all three federal agencies he said he wants to cut.

The poll found 45 percent of Texans think his run hurt Texas' image nationally while only 17 percent said it improved.

The random telephone survey of 806 Texans, including 669 registered voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Exclusive: Paulo Coelho At Davos ? On SOPA, Piracy And Life As An Artist

PAULO_COELHOPaulo Coelho, the world famous author of The Pilgrimage, The Alchemist and many other works which have in many ways become an inspiration for entrepreneurs, gave an exclusive and rare interview to TechCrunch at the World Economic Forum in Davos last night, the recording of which is published below. Coelho and I had previously been moderators at a dinner curated by Loic Le Meur on the future of social status and the interview took place in a taxi to another venue. (My write-up from the dinner will come later, suffice it to say that it was most entertaining and enlightening). Coelho last gave an interview to Mike Arrington in 2008 where he said "MySpace Is my wife... Facebook Is my mistress". Coelho has oft-repeated his view that artists and artistic works do no suffer when they are copied, quite the opposite. Their distribution becomes greater and the artist comes off better as a result. Coelho has even taken to pirating his own books on The Pirate Bay. What is interesting about our interview is his continuing vehement repudiation of the traditional book publishing industry's response to the new platform of the Internet.

(AP) ? Higher oil prices are making it easier for ConocoPhillips to complete a massive transformation this year.

The Houston-based company says profit rose 66.1 percent in the fourth quarter. Part of that came from the sale of assets, but the results also reflect the increased price Conoco got for oil compared with a year ago.

From October to December, Conoco earned $3.39 billion, or $2.56 per share, compared with $2.04 billion, or $1.39 per share a year earlier. Revenue increased 17.2 percent to $62.4 billion.

Excluding gains, earnings were $2.02 per share. Analysts had expected earnings of $1.77 per share on revenue of $45.1 billion.

Conoco has revamped its business through the sale of billions of dollars of assets. This year it plans to spin off its refinery business.

It's guys, not ladies, who splurge on lunch

Getty Images / Getty Images file

A man eats his lunch at a Burger King in London.

By Allison Linn

The next time you stop in for a morning latte or head out for a restaurant lunch, take a look around ? and don?t be surprised if you see a lot of young men standing in line.

A new survey of workers finds that men spend significantly more on coffee and lunch than women.

The survey, from staffing firm Accounting Principals, also found that younger workers spend more than older workers on lunch and coffee during the workday.

Overall, those lunches out and coffee breaks are costing workers a bundle.? American workers who buy coffee and lunch spend an average of $1,000 a year on coffee and $2,000 a year on lunch, based on the survey of 1,000 workers.

About two-thirds of workers buy lunch and half buy coffee during the week.

Men were slightly more likely than women to go out to eat, but they spent a lot more. The men who buy their lunches spend an average of $46.30 on lunch each week, compared with $26.50 for women who go out to eat.

Men who buy coffee spend an average of $25.70 vs. $15 for women.

The caffeine fix is a bigger hit on the wallets of 18- to 34-year-old workers. Younger workers who buy coffee spend an average of $24.74 a week on coffee, compared with $14.15 for workers 45 and older who buy coffee during the work week. Younger workers also spend far more on lunch than older workers: about $45 a week vs. $32.

Not surprisingly, a third of those surveyed said one of their goals for 2012 was to bring their own lunch more often.

Accounting Principals, a unit of Adecco, commissioned the survey in December.

Tip of the hat to Consumerist, which first reported on the study.

Gingrich, Romney go head-to-head at Florida debate (Reuters)

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) ? Rising Republican Newt Gingrich and rival Mitt Romney squared off on Monday at a debate that will help determine which of them has the best shot at winning the pivotal Florida presidential primary on January 31.

Stung by Gingrich's convincing victory in South Carolina on Saturday, Romney desperately needs a good debate performance to help restore momentum for his campaign.

Romney has fought back against Gingrich by drawing attention to Gingrich's record as a Washington insider and former speaker of the House of Representatives who left office under an ethical cloud.

After stumbling in the last debate in South Carolina when pressed about his tax records, the former Massachusetts governor promised to release two of his annual tax returns.

But he called on Gingrich to disclose his contract for the government-sponsored mortgage financing giant Freddie Mac, for which Gingrich made $1.6 million.

Shortly before the debate, Gingrich's former consulting firm released a contract Gingrich signed with the company in 2006, but it shed little light on what Gingrich was hired to do. The document called for a $300,000 retainer and $25,000 in fees monthly for the year.

Gingrich staunchly denies his work for the mortgage giant made him a lobbyist, but Romney insists he was, making his case the Gingrich is a creature of Washington.

"If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is a duck," Romney said.

The issue has particular resonance in Florida, one of the states hardest hit by the collapse of the U.S. real estate market, helping to contribute to a state unemployment rate of 9.9 percent, above the national average.

Florida's primary may play a huge role in determining who becomes the Republican nominee to oppose President Barack Obama's re-election bid in November.

Gingrich trounced the former Massachusetts governor in South Carolina's Republican primary, based partly on a series of strong debate performances. Aiming for another on Monday, he called Romney's attacks desperate.

"It used to be pious baloney; now it's just desperate baloney," he quipped. "As president, he'll be able to open a delicatessen."

New opinion polls show that Gingrich has already jumped into the lead in Florida.

The tense back and forth between the pair presaged a potentially bruising debate. The remaining two candidates, Texas Congressman Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum are seeking to make a mark after finishing far behind in South Carolina.

GINRICH LOOKING FOR 'KNOCKOUT PUNCH'

The contest, sponsored by NBC, National Journal and the Tampa Bay Times, is the 18th of the 2012 election cycle, and the first of two debates this week. A second is scheduled for Jacksonville on Thursday.

A Romney victory in Florida would blunt Gingrich's surge and restore the luster of his campaign. Gingrich wants to deliver what he has called "the knockout punch."

Gingrich has used the debates to his advantage, helping him rise from a bitter fourth-place finish in Iowa to victory in South Carolina.

When his ex-wife told ABC News last week that Gingrich had sought an "open marriage," Gingrich turned questions about it into an attack on the news media that thrilled conservatives and helped undecided voters swing his way.

But Romney has waged successful attacks on Gingrich. An ad campaign run by the Romney team and an outside group that backs him lampooned Gingrich in Iowa and knocked him out of the front-runner position.

Before the debate, a crowd of about 100 Occupy Wall Street protesters gathered outside the debate hall, shouting chants including, "We are the 99 percent."

Romney says he'll attend debates in Florida (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Mitt Romney says he will attend the next GOP presidential debates in Florida, which is next up on the election calendar.

After last weekend's two debates in South Carolina, advisers to the former Massachusetts governor had said the candidate hadn't committed to any more campaign debates.

But Romney said Saturday, on the day when South Carolinians are voting in their state's GOP primary, that he will be at the Tampa debate, and advisers say he also will participate in the Jacksonville debate on Thursday.

His commitment to the debate might be a sign that he doesn't think he will do as well as first thought in South Carolina against rival Newt Gingrich and will need to continue the fight in Florida.

The Florida primary is Jan. 31.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Mitt Romney is heading into primary day conceding that he'll win some and lose some.

Romney on Friday acknowledged the contest here is "neck-and-neck" and said he expects to lose "some primaries" to rival Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker.

As voters head to the polls Saturday, Romney and Gingrich both planned to appear at the same breakfast restaurant in the morning. Both campaigns refused to change their schedules Friday night, potentially setting up a face-off between the two men ahead of the polls closing.

The past week has been an abrupt reversal of fortune for the former Massachusetts governor, who landed here last Wednesday after a big victory in New Hampshire and what was then a narrow win in Iowa.

But this week the Iowa GOP reversed his win there after problems with the vote count, and he's been dogged by questions about releasing his tax returns. And instead of emerging from South Carolina with three wins and a seeming lock on the GOP nomination, Romney and his team are now acknowledging they could lose here. That would leave the putative front-runner with just one early state win heading into Florida's Jan. 31 primary.

Romney's campaign planned at least two campaign stops Saturday ahead of polls closing. He planned to visit his campaign headquarters and Tommy's Country Ham House, where Gingrich also planned to stop. Romney was to end the day in Columbia, the state capital.

Afghans hit by food price hikes as Pakistan shutdown bites (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? With snow piled deep in front of his small Kabul shop and a border shutdown enforced by Pakistan driving up food prices and severing a vital lifeline into Afghanistan, Asmatullah is having his own winter of discontent.

Since Pakistan closed supply routes to NATO forces in Afghanistan after the coalition killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in a cross-border air attack in November, ordinary Afghans and foreigners alike are feeling the impact of soaring food costs.

"I have lost 50 percent of my customers," Asmatullah says, somehow managing a smile as he surveys his empty shop, surrounded by cartons of eggs and milk, boxes of cigarettes, drinks and crates of bottled water, now frozen solid on the icy pavement outside.

"Everybody has less income now, so people are just not able to buy. When the border is closed, the prices go up," he said, huddled in a black hat and leather jacket to try and keep one of the most biting winters for years at bay.

The border shutdown, which Pakistan has promised to lift at a time still to be decided, underscores Afghanistan's reliance on food imports through its mountainous eastern border, rather than from Iran in the west and longer, more costly, routes north through ex-Soviet Central Asia.

Most food imports come from India, Dubai and Pakistan, and are trucked into the landlocked country from Karachi, entering Afghanistan through turbulent southern Kandahar province, in Spin Boldak, and Torkham, in eastern Nangarhar province.

Since the Pakistan border closure, the cost of trucking or flying supplies into the country for U.S. forces has soared from $17 million a month to $104 million, figures from the Pentagon in U.S. media showed this month.

At the three-storey Finest supermarket, popular with foreigners and locals and the target of a deadly suicide bomb last year, owner Matiuddin says the cost of importing a container of food has soared from $8000 before the border closure to around $23,000.

"It's a huge problem. Everybody is yelling. If they don't solve it soon we are going to have to close our business," Matiuddin said in his cramped office, slamming his hand on an ageing fax machine in frustration.

"We are just having to let food expire and keep it on the shelves in hope of selling it."

Since the shutdown was imposed, prices for a kilo of chicken have jumped from 200 Afghani ($2) to 250 Afghani. Tomatoes have more than quadrupled and those for cheese doubled.

Housekeeper Nadira Habibi, 37, said that even with her husband and a son working, it was becoming too difficult to feed her family of seven.

"Before we spent around 20,000 Afghani a month ($400), but now it's more than 30,000, which we're just not able to afford," Habibi said.

South Carolina Primary Election 2012: Newt Gingrich Wins Most Delegates

WASHINGTON ? Newt Gingrich won most of the delegates in South Carolina's Republican presidential primary Saturday, narrowing Mitt Romney's lead in the race for delegates to the party's national convention this summer.

Gingrich, the former House speaker, has won at least 19 delegates, with six left to be awarded.

These are the first delegates Gingrich has won in a primary or caucus. In all, Gingrich has 21 delegates, including endorsements from Republican National Committee members who will automatically attend the convention. Romney has a total of 33 delegates.

South Carolina Republicans award 11 delegates to the statewide winner and two delegates to the candidate who gets the most votes in each of the state's seven congressional districts. Gingrich was the statewide winner and he won at least four congressional districts.

The race for delegates is still in the early stages. Only 62 delegates were at stake in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, combined. It will take 1,144 delegates to win the GOP nomination.

Up next: Florida on Jan. 31. Florida Republicans will award all 50 of their delegates to the statewide winner.

The Associated Press calculates the number of national convention delegates won by candidates in each presidential primary or caucus, based on state and national party rules. Most primaries and some caucuses are binding, meaning delegates won by the candidates are pledged to support that candidate at the national convention this summer.

Political parties in some states, however, use local caucuses to elect delegates to state or congressional district conventions, where national delegates are selected. In these states, the AP uses the results from local caucuses to calculate the number of national delegates each candidate will win, if the candidates maintain the same level of support.

Protest SOPA/PIPA!

This may be a repeat message that someone else has posted, and it's certainly just an echo of what the admins displayed most of the day, but the more exposure, the better our chance.

Write to your representatives, or do whatever you want to do to make your voice heard! I know you may feel insignificant as an individual, but if everyone used that excuse to avoid speaking up, we will lose! Here on RPG alone we are probably a thousand or more strong (maybe that's a low estimate, I don't know); if each one of us makes a statement, that's a collective voice that is difficult to ignore!

And if every community like ours does the same, then we will beat this nonsense. So don't let this pass without giving your two cents, pence, rupees, reals, yen, or whatever else you've got.

Will Rachel Say Yes? Glee's Cory Monteith Dishes on Finchel's Future (omg!)

What will Rachel's answer be?

That's what gleeks everywhere are no doubt wondering following Tuesday's helluva cliff-hanger: Finn, still directionless and newly hit with a boatload of bad news about his dad, got down on one knee and asked Rachel to marry him! TVGuide.com quizzed Glee star Cory Monteith about whether or not Finchel will soon be walking down the aisle, the Bee Gees tribute episode, singing en espa?ol, the movie he's producing for Fox 2000, another Glee tour and more!

Oh, and he'll "definitely" be back for Season 4. Yay!

So, what are you allowed to tell us about Rachel's answer?
Cory Monteith:
She provides her answer -- in true Glee form -- in song. We pick up where we left off tonight in the following episode. [Editor's note: The next new episode airs on Jan. 31 ? and it's the Michael Jackson tribute!]

First Look Photo Gallery: Glee's Michael Jackson tribute

And it will be either "yes" or "no," correct?
Monteith:
Correct, it is a definite answer. But, you know how kids are. I don't think it's going to be as simple as they think. I suspect there's more down the road. Her answer is shocking, I can tell you that.

Finn has one of the stronger storylines this season, being unsure about his future after high school. Is his proposal to Rachel an extension of his feeling lost?
Monteith:
Absolutely. It's not only him grasping at straws to maintain the relationship, but I think that's definitely part of it. It's equal parts Finn not knowing what he wants and Rachel being the best thing going in his life ? coupled, of course, with him actually being in love with her. But I think it's all a little more complex than Finn thinks it is. He's got a very idealistic point of view of how [getting married] should go down and how it will go down. He doesn't understand ? as no 17- or 18-year-old would -- how difficult it's going to be.

Will the other glee clubbers find out about the proposal?
Monteith:
Yes! There's one stirring scene in particular with Finn and Kurt ? a "I thought we were supposed to be brothers" moment. There will be the kind of reaction that you would expect. Also, I think Finn is going to be on the learning curve of "Oh, it wasn't just as simple as proposing and her saying yes." There's a lot more to it.

Glee's Becky talks up big episode

Here's hoping the big news means more scenes with Finn's mom, Carole, and Burt, which are always great.
Monteith:
Scenes with Chris and Lea, scenes with Burt and Carole, those are the great scenes!... Those are really where a lot of the better acting gets done, not to say anything bad about the other scenes. One of the most exciting things about Finn's proposal is that implies that a lot of good stuff will be coming down the road for Finn and Rachel and his parents and Kurt and everybody.

What was your reaction when you read in the script that Finn would be popping the big question?
Monteith:
I freaked out and called Lea. We were both floored and kind of blindsided by it. It makes sense, but it was like, "Is this actually happening?" It's sort of been a long time coming, and it felt like the right timing. I think [the episode's] got some of my better work on the show. For me, it was really exciting to be able to have that scene with her. I have so much history with Lea and so much to draw from in terms of these characters.

Glee boss Ryan Murphy said he'd love for the show's Bee Gees tribute to include a dream sequence where you get to dance with John Travolta. Thoughts?
Monteith:
Yes, please! I really hope that happens because it would be amazing, just as a look-back-on-your-life-when-you're-50 kind of thing. I hope Ryan goes through with it and I hope that they ask John and I hope he says yes! I've got my fingers crossed at this point ? I'm just an actor, you know.

2011's best episodes: Glee's "Asian F"

Coach Sue's supportive side has been on full display two episodes in a row now. With her campaign over, where does she go from here?
Monteith:
I actually don't know. The scripts come out a couple of days before we shoot the episodes; today we're working on a couple of different episodes, we're wrapping up the Ricky Martin episode and we're shooting a Valentine's Day episode as well. I think it's really interesting to see the softer side of Sue, to see a character that's "the bad guy" switch gears a little bit. Jane can handle it. She's brilliant.

The Ricky Martin episode! Do you get to sing anything in Spanish?
Monteith:
I sure do!

What do you get to sing?
Monteith:
I can't say anything about it yet. It's not a solo, but it's really goofy and awesome.

Can you reveal anything about the other winner of The Glee Project, Samuel Larsen? Is he coming on the show soon?
Monteith: Yeah, he's here today. I can confirm he's here, but we haven't been formally introduced yet. His is a very interesting role and it ties into a lot of preexisting storylines. It feels very natural. It's a smart way to bring him into the show. I hear he's very talented.

The Glee Project renewed for Season 2

Murphy had previously told us his character would be a relative of Puck's.
Monteith:
I do not know if that's true yet. He joins the show in the Valentine's Day episode.

Are you guys going to go on tour again this summer? Do you want to? Outside of Glee, you're in a band and working on movies...
Monteith:
There are a lot of different things I want to do. The tour was a really exciting part of what the fans really wanted to see. There's definitely a demand for it. I really don't know what... it's kind of like, I show up where they tell me to. I really don't know!

What's the status of the movie you're producing and starring in for Fox 2000?
Monteith:
It's still in full-effect. We're working on the second writer's draft at the moment. It's in development and moving along nicely. I think it's fast-tracked or something because things really seem to be cooking. We're starting to get into specifics about characters, some neat action sequences... It's been really, really exciting to be a part of producing something like this.

Can you tell us what it's about?
Monteith:
It's a heist film centered around an ensemble of interns in a financial institution ? think Madoff. It's St. Elmo's Fire meets Ocean's Eleven.

What do you think, Gleeks? Are you hoping Rachel and Finn tie the knot? Sound off in the comments below.
