Linda Ackerman Anderson is a cofounder of Being First, Inc., a change leadership and transformational change consulting and training firm in Durango, Colorado. She specializes in facilitating transformational change in Fortune 1000 businesses, government, and the military. Linda has spoken about conscious transformation at national and international conferences, and is known as a thought leader and inspiring model of her message. You've probably seen clouds of insects swirling round a streetlamp at night. But something you may not have noticed is that streetlights attract bugs to the ground below them, too?especially carnivorous bugs, like beetles. So says a study in the journal Biology Letters by researchers at the University of Exeter. Thomas W. Davies, Jonathan Bennie and Kevin J. Gaston,"Street lighting changes the composition of invertebrate communities"]

The researchers set up 28 traps in the grass below and between streetlamps in the English town of Helston, in Cornwall. They collected captured insects at dawn and dusk over three days, and ended up with nearly 1,200 specimens. Turns out, more bugs hung out under the lights than between them. And that was true at night and day?suggesting that streetlights permanently upped the value of the buggy real estate below them.

The researchers also found greater numbers of predators and scavengers under the lamps?like ground beetles, harvestmen and ants?because it may be easier to hunt for prey with the help of a spotlight.

With artificial lighting increasing globally at 6 percent a year, the authors say there's a chance light pollution could shake up food webs in unforeseen ways. Call it a bug in the system.

Ask most people to identify a creative person, and they?ll probably describe an artist ? Picasso, Shakespeare or even Lady Gaga.

But what about a Nobel prize?winning chemist? Or a team of engineers that figures out how to make a car engine operate more efficiently? Creativity, it turns out, is not only the domain of painters, singers and playwrights, says Robert DeHaan, a retired Emory University cell biologist who now studies how to teach creative thinking.

?Creativity is the creation of an idea or object that is both novel and useful,? he explains. ?Creativity is a new idea that has value in solving a problem, or an object that is new or useful.? And its at the heart of good science.

Celebrity chef Ramsay injured in charity soccer match

World-famous TV chef Ramsay, who once had a trial with Rangers, had to be given oxygen on the pitch before he was taken off by medics after Sheringham tackled him from behind at the match, held at Old Trafford to raise funds for Unicef.

Following the tackle, Ramsay was taken to hospital for further treatment but was released later in the evening.

Coroner: Gunman in Indiana standoff from Texas

VALPARAISO, Ind.?A Texas man who took hostages in a northwestern Indiana realty office and held police at bay for several hours suffered three gunshot wounds before dying, likely from two different weapons, a coroner said Saturday.

Roy L. Ferguson, 48, of Fulshear, Texas, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said. That was two hours after the end of the nearly seven-hour standoff at Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso, about 40 miles southeast of Chicago.

"The likelihood of all three gunshot wounds coming from the same weapon is not good," Harris said. He said that wouldn't be confirmed until an autopsy is performed. It had not yet been scheduled because of Memorial Day weekend.

Valparaiso Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Grennes said Saturday that Ferguson had only one firearm?a handgun. Grennes also said the SWAT officers who rushed inside the office after hearing gunshots at 4:30 p.m. did not fire on Ferguson, but officers exchanged gunfire with Ferguson when the standoff started.

Asked Saturday if police had shot Ferguson, Grennes said, "It's under investigation."

Police received a 911 call around 10 a.m. Friday reporting a man with a gun had entered the brokerage office, Grennes said.

There were fewer than 10 people in the building when the incident began, he said.

One of them was accountant Carolyn Biesen. She was in her office when she heard a commotion near the front desk. Biesen walked out, saw a man standing over her injured co-worker on the ground and yelled at him to leave.

"That's when he pulled his gun out?and pointed it in the air," she told The Associated Press late Friday, several hours after she and several other people were taken hostage.

Biesen, 51, retreated back into her office, locked herself in, shoved a file cabinet in front of the door and called 911. Curled up under her desk, she heard two gunshots, then several more in rapid succession.

Ferguson, police said later, was looking for someone he believed owed him money when he went into the Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso on Friday morning.

Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner said officers believe Ferguson shot himself twice in the head before SWAT members broke windows and stormed inside less than two hours after the last two hostages had been released unharmed.

"He has some history here," Brickner said of Ferguson.

An ambulance rushed Ferguson to a hospital, where he died, police said.

No hostages reported being shot, though Grennes said one person who was struck in the head was treated and released from a hospital.

Another witness, Randy Baker, said he was in an adjacent parking lot shoveling asphalt when an officer wielding a pistol suddenly ran by and asked if he'd seen or heard anything about a gun. When Baker said he hadn't, the officer approached the building.

Seconds later, the officer began rapidly firing at least half a dozen times, said Baker, who took cover behind his work truck. He said he saw a woman in the Prudential window cowering under an office desk.

"That's what really scared me," Baker said. "And I ran out of there fast."

Mack Elliott, an agent at the brokerage, wasn't in the office Friday but said he spoke with agents who were present. He believes the incident stemmed from a dispute over a real estate transaction.

Biesen, the accountant, said she didn't believe the gunman intended to hurt her.

"If he wanted to, he could have come right into the office?maybe shooting through the door," she said.

Biesen spoke Friday night from her home, where several dozen family members and friends gathered after she had made it out unharmed. Despite the trauma, she said she felt sorry for the gunman, noting he could have decided to surrender after all the hostages were released.

"It's very sad," she said.

Elderly couple dead in Ottawa-area fire | Canada - London Free Press

An elderly husband and wife are dead after fire broke out at an Ottawa-area retirement home Friday night.

Emergency officials in Hawkesbury, Ont., responded to the blaze at the Place Mont-Roc around 9:30 p.m.

The home to 90 residents was evacuated, but Anne-Marie Bonin, 84, and Jean-Paul Bonin, 87, were caught inside and died.

No other residents were injured in the fire.

Some of the residents were taken to hospital for precautionary measures, and more than 30 others - those not sent home with family members - were taken to a nearby retirement home.

That way his so-called ?attack? on private equity is neither a personal attack on Mitt Romney nor a generalized attack on American business.

It?s an attack on a particular kind of capitalism that Romney and JPMorgan both practice: Using other peoples? money to make big bets which, if they go wrong, can wreak havoc on the economy.

It?s the substitution of casino capitalism for real capitalism, the dominance of the betting parlor over the real business of America, financial innovation rather than product innovation.

It?s been terrible for the American economy and for our democracy.

It?s also why Obama has to come out swinging about JPMorgan. The JPMorgan Chase debacle would have been prevented if the Volcker Rule were sufficiently strict, prohibiting banks from using commercial deposits to make bets except very specific offsetting bets (hedges) on narrow classes of trades.

But Jamie Dimon and JPMorgan have been lobbying like mad to loosen the Volcker Rule and widen that exception to include the very kind of reckless bets JPMorgan made. And they?re still at it, as evidenced by Dimon?s current claim that the rule that eventually emerges would allow those bets.

As a practical matter, the Volcker Rule is hopeless. It was intended to be Glass-Steagall lite ? a more nuanced version of the original Depression-era law that separated commercial from investment banking. But JPMorgan has proven that any nuance ? any exception ? will be stretched beyond recognition by the big banks.

So much money can be made when these bets turn out well that the big banks will stop at nothing to keep the spigot open.

There?s no alternative but to resurrect Glass-Steagall as a whole. Even then, the biggest banks are still too big to fail or to regulate. We also need to heed the recent advice of the Dallas branch of the Federal Reserve, and break them up.

At the same time, there?s no point to the ?carried interest? loophole that allows private-equity managers like Mitt Romney to treat their incomes as capital gains, taxed at only 15 percent, when they?ve risked no money of their own.

If private equity were good for America it wouldn?t need this or the other tax preference it depends on, elevating debt over equity. But the private equity industry has huge political clout, which is why these tax preferences remain.

Get it? Bain Capital and JPMorgan are parts of the same problem. The President should be leading the charge against both.

Girls Write Out: Friendship

This week, we received a very kind letter on Smitten and how it reminded one reader to invest more in her friend relationships. ?I think that's a lesson everyone needs here and again. ?Friendships take work at first. ?When Colleen and I met, our connection online was instant, but we edited back and forth for each other for years. ?We invested in each other. ?We made a commitment that YOUR publishing is as important as MY publishing.

As I got more kids, I became less reliable. ? (We met when I had two -- now I have four and my youngest is 11.) ?Colleen got busier publishing a bajillion books a year. ?LOL ?But the friendship stands because of its solid foundation in God. ?I know her heart. ?She knows mine. ?Even though we are totally different animals.?I used to say Colleen is a Golden Retriever and I am a Siamese Cat (and I don't even LIKE cats, so that tells you something!)

The investment and foundation of friendship is so important. ?A relationship is a living, breathing thing. It takes time, commitment and love.

Friends always seem to have something in them that you don't possess and you honor this part of them. ?For me, in Colleen it's her endurance and her ability to go on when I would have long since given up. ?

?In Denise, it's her organization and the way her mind works. ?It's so linear and beautiful and I wish for one day I could run my life like she runs hers. ?She'd be a Beagle.

With Diann, it's her strength of character. ?There are so many days I want to wimp out and give up on success. ?Then, I look to Diann who is always happy even when she's complaining about chemo, she's funny. ?If she were an animal, she'd be a Labradoodle.

In Cheryl, it's her compassion. ?She has so much compassion on those who are in dire straights. ?She has walked some tough roads and because of it, she can empathize and help people through really dark times. ?She'd be a St. Bernard in a rescue.

Hey, Connection Isn't Always Easy | Parenting Course | Parent ...

re?la?tion?ship [ri-ley-shuhn-ship] noun

1. a connection, association, or involvement.

2. connection between persons by blood or marriage.

3. an emotional or other connection between people.

4. a sexual involvement; affair.

Being a mother, wife, lover, woman, friend? sometimes it?s hard. Maybe it?s just that by definition relationships are hard. Look above. The word connection is used in three of the four explanations of relationship and hey, connection isn?t always easy.

I opened the Bible on a day years ago when life and my relationships were getting the better of me. I was down and looking for some encouragement. I love to open certain books (the Bible being one of my favorites to do this with) to a random page and let where ever my finger falls speak to me. The words on which I land almost always knock me off my feet with the wisdom they hold. A word, passage or an entire page; on this day the message for me was contained in a single word.

?Ephphatha!? (which means, ?Be opened!?). Mark 7:34

This single word spoke volumes to my heart. I was on a family vacation with my husband and four young kids. The saying ?where ever you go, there you are? could not more accurately describe my state of mind. Here I was with the ones I loved on an island off the coast of Georgia, near paradise, and yet my heart was heavy. I remember struggling at the time with balance. Questions about who I was a woman verse who I was as a wife and mother were stirring inside me.

Hmmm. Ephphatha. The morning after finding my word (and still not being exactly sure why) I rose early to take a walk. The word I had unearthed was working on me. What was this word and what key towards balance did it hold for me?

And then there on my walk, I saw it. The answers to my questions.

It was standing there in the form of a great, big, old majestic tree. Beautiful, stretched out in all it?s glory, but so alone.

It was then it hit me. I walked home, grabbed a piece of scrap paper and wrote down this poem.

Ephphatha (be opened)

A solitary oak left to grow alone.

Beautiful, symmetrical and glorious to behold, standing strong

in stark contrast to the wide open field around it,

where sunlight and water abound for it?s pleasures alone.

Open, yes, but to whom or what?

To itself and those that walk by to gaze upon it and admire?

?

But growing in connection with others,

interwoven and entwined, forced to bend and reach,

stretching out crocked limbs in search of light.

This makes an interesting tree.

Proximity necessitating flow, one in relationship to the other,

where light and water are shared and each delights in the beauty of the other.

Therein is the meaning. Therein the open heart.
