8th Avenue South: On Paul Ryan and Launching

Paul Ryan said that college grads shouldn't have to live out their twenties in their childhood bedrooms. Paul Ryan is very good with language. I agree with him that college grads shouldn't have to be living at home but that doesn't mean they should move out either. I'm glad that the way he phrases his comment permits a choice. And I do understand that his rhetoric was directed at an economy that might give college grads a choice about choosing between launching and living on the street or out of the backseat of your car or staying home and having fresh socks and steady meals.? My complaint is that he employed a concept conceived in the sixties and is tainted with traces of the rebelliousness that initiated the deline in the traditional Americn family.? After all, as?the Vice Presidential choice of the Republicans, wouldn't you think that he would be talking about the family as the most important economic unit in a nation no matter what configuration that family unit has?

I think this whole idea of having to launch and specifying a particular age range to do so is more a product of the worldview of Baby Boomers from the rebellious sixties who rejected the values of the traditional home than one that can be applied historically and culturally as universal. That Ryan conceded to the construct might imply that his values too have been swayed by the influence of the relativity of American popular culture. For example, Asian, Mediterranean, and indigenous peoples consider the idea of launching itself as a kind of prefabrication of exported Americana. In fact, Ryan might be using the same rationale or argument that the sixties boomers used to leave home and commune with one another. At least he is appealing to the argument because the whole concept of having to launch is a non-traditional American value.

?

Putting that aside however, and speaking in terms of postmodern America, the authors of Not Quite Adults (2010) suggest the trend to launch later may actually be a good thing (Sue Shellenbarger, The Benefits of a Late Launch, WSJ Blog). I think its a mutual decision on when an adult child should leave the building. The expectant launching age depends on a number of factors. Also, the expectant launching age varies depending on country and culture. Countries and cultures that respect the elderly, also have a higher regard for youth, that is, where you find people caring for the elderly, you will find them caring for youth. Caring for might not be the right word. Attending to might be a better verb which connotes not only caring for but also showing an interest in.

?

Arianna Huffington made a good point in her video series Becoming Fearless about aging: "In a culture that values youth as much as ours does, time is public enemy number one. Every new wrinkle or gray hair can send fear shooting through us. I'm lucky enough to have come from Greece, a country that honors and reveres old age" (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/28/arianna-on-aging_n_1834072.html). I believe what she means here is that we value the appearance of youth not necessarily the spirit of youth.

?

I feel that in America today, we value neither youth nor the elderly. We have allowed schools, social service agencies, and law enforcement to usurp parental responsibility as we have relied on government, retirement communities, and nursing homes to assume our responsibilities as children to our parents. We have been dehumanized by a media that glorifies a youthful popular culture and by a culture of dependency and victimization that signals our youth that they are entitled to self-esteem and happiness without having to earn it. Unfortunately, it signals to parents as well that they are now liberated from having to teach their children the lessons of hard work. Just as adults today feel they should have it all and have it now; children are now entitled to all the cookies in the cookie jar and it just doesn't matter if it spoils their dinner because no one sits down to eat together anyway. This dehumanization is characterized by a bifurcation between the generations. We are not only being cut off from one another based on race as I have noted in previous posts in regard to Black youth and their perception of whiteness, but also based on age.

?

It was only two or three generations ago that women did not leave their parents' home until they were married and it was only two or three generations ago that men, particularly men raised in rural areas, lived in extended families in the same home or built homes on their parents' property. We sometimes forget the demographic of pre-World War II America where more than 50% of the population lived on subsistence farms. It wasn't until the mid-fifties that there was a great movement from the rural areas to suburbia and this coincided with the movement from urban areas to suburban areas. We don't hear very much about the influx of people from the rural areas to suburbia as we are so intent on speaking about White Flight from the cities.

?

So Paul Ryan's comments may have been cute and in reference to a sagging economy but they reflect a worldview that originated in the sixties and still remains at the heart of the counterculture implying a rejection of the home, family values, and parents. We were as a nation in far greater distress during the Depression of the thirties and no one worried about launching their children then. In fact, children were of greater value then and were needed to work the farms. That we don't value this aspect of the family as a viable economic unit that ushers us through hard times is reflective of an age that does not value family.

North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University is leading a four-year federal research effort to evaluate freshwater sustainability across the southern United States and develop policy recommendations on what can be done to make the best use of water supplies in the face of population growth and the effects of climate change over the next 10 to 30 years. Arizona State University and the University of Georgia are also part of the project.

The project will analyze historical hydroecological observations, water management policies, and population and climate change projections to determine how sustainable water resources will be over the next 10 to 30 years. The research is supported by a four-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

A significant aspect of the research is to evaluate adaptive water management strategies in the arid Southwest and to determine whether they could be used to improve the sustainability of water resources elsewhere. This will include retrospective analyses to see which of these strategies would have been most effective in addressing water sustainability issues related to ecological and human use over the past 50 years.

"Steve Jobs once said 'You can't connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backward,'" says Dr. Sankar Arumugam, an associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at NC State who is principal investigator and project director of the grant. "We will be looking at more than 50 years' worth of climate, water and ecological data and trying to connect the dots."

Researchers will also be creating tools to develop near-term climate change projections customized for the southern U.S., so that integrated surface water and groundwater models can be developed for better managing water infrastructure systems to supply water for human and ecological demands.

In addition, researchers will use models that simulate the actions and interactions of a population to better understand the effect of public attitudes on the success of water management policies.

###

Other NC State researchers involved with the project include Dr. Kenneth Kunkel, research professor of marine, earth and atmospheric sciences; Dr. Kumar Mahinthakumar, professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering; Dr. Emily Zechman, assistant professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering; and Dr. Tushar Sinha, postdoctoral researcher. NC State will receive approximately $900,000 of the grant funding, which will also support one additional postdoctoral researcher and two Ph.D. students. The remainder of the funding will go to Arizona State and the University of Georgia.

These Buckyballs Are Your Banned-In-The-USA Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

You may not be able to purchase the rare earth magnets known as Buckyballs for much longer. They're not banned yet, but the Consumer Product Safety Administration is suing to stop sales of the delightful toys. Here's why: kids, too young to know better, have been eating the delicious-looking magnets, which wreak havoc while passing through the intestinal system by clumping together. More »

Helpful Hints For Completing Your Home Improvement Projects

Home improvement is a fantastic way to spruce up an outdated d?cor or to give your home a new look. There are so many different options when it comes to home improvement while fitting almost anybody's budget. Painting, wallpaper or even just new curtains are a few examples that will give any home a fresh look for a minimal price.

Windows

To reduce the number of unwanted pests in your home, cut back shrubbery and plants that are close to the windows. These plants are great homes to insects and spiders. If they rub up against your house and windows, they can easily crawl inside to find a warm dry place. Cut back these bushes to a foot or more from the side of the house and under the windows.

Add shutters to the outside windows on your home for a dramatic change in architecture. If your exterior looks a bit drab or flat, you can use this simple tip to give it much more depth and interest. Paint them a coordinating color to your house, often the color of the front door.

Try installing some flower boxes outside your home. Try installing them in your windows or on the front porch railings. They are a relatively cheap home improvement project too. You have to buy soil and regularly maintain the flowers though. If these aren't for you, try buying gardens in pots and placing them on your porch or front steps.

Velfac Fenster can be very interesting information for you.

A great tip for home improvement is to inspect your windows and see if they need to be replaced. The key here is to make sure you are going to get enough value for what you pay for. If the windows just need some maintenance it is better to do that than replace because windows are a major investment.

Doors And Windows

Insulate your home in order to save energy and lower your heating and cooling bills. Check the attic, as well as windows and doors. Any leaky spots should be fixed. Weather stripping can be added to doors and windows and new insulation can be added to the attic. You want to keep air that you paid to heat or cool, inside the home.

When it comes to home improvement, consider replacing your windows and doors. This not only has a chance of greatly improving the value of the home, but may also severely decrease the amount of money required to keep your house warm and dry. You can also add extra security with new doors and windows.

Hunt down drafts in your house around your windows and doors, and seal them with insulation or weather-stripping to make your home more energy-efficient. On a breezy day, hold a lit candle or a stick of burning incense around the edges of your doors and windows -- with the drapes tied back away from the edges -- to easily spot drafty areas as the flame moves or the smoke wafts.

Be sure that your doors and windows have tight seals to keep out extreme temperatures and to insure the best air quality in your home. If the air coming into your home is filtered through your heating and cooling system, you will have less chances of contracting air-borne illness.

In conclusion, it can be quite easy and affordable to improve your home's appearance. If you are doing it yourself and only working on simple projects it will become obviously worth the little money spent. There are many options and styles available to suit everyone's needs. Who doesn't want to walk into their home and feel aesthetically refreshed?

Killer can keep insurance money | Bankrate.com

A Tennessee man who murdered his wife in a bathtub for the life insurance money has been allowed to keep $200,000 of her insurance settlement.

The strange case began in 2003 when Teresa Larkin was found dead by her then-11-year-old daughter Tia in the Johnson City home they shared with Dale Keith Larkin, Tia's stepfather. A partial autopsy was performed on the body but no X-rays were taken prior to burial, according to The Associated Press.

Larkin stood to collect a total of $700,000 on four life insurance policies in his wife's name before his stepdaughter, who suspected Larkin of the murder, filed a lawsuit to block the windfall.

In 2006, the suit was settled with Tia receiving $500,000 and Larkin getting $203,000 of the death benefits.

Three years later, Johnson City homicide investigators convinced prosecutors to exhume the body, and a second autopsy was performed. It revealed that the victim had suffered 21 separate injuries, including breaks to her sternum and both arms, prior to drowning.

Charges were filed against Larkin, who was subsequently convicted of his wife's murder and sentenced to life in prison in 2011.

Tia Larkin returned to court to recover Dale Larkin's share of the life insurance settlement, claiming her stepfather had misrepresented his innocence and citing Tennessee's "slayer's statute" that prohibits those involved in murder from inheriting from the deceased.

Life insurance generally bars murderers from receiving proceeds from their victim's life policy just as common law forbids individuals from profiting from wrongdoing. And a life insurance company doesn't require an actual?murder conviction to deny a claim; intentional neglect or even want of an "insurable interest" in the insured can be enough to block payment of the death benefit.

But the appellate court ruled that the stepdaughter freely agreed to split the life insurance settlement with Larkin, even though she did not believe he was innocent.

"This court is not happy with the results of our decision," wrote Appellate Judge D. Michael Swiney in the opinion released last week. "We are aware that our decision may appear inequitable given the results. We, however, are not free to decide cases based upon our personal preferences but instead must decide them based upon the law."

What do you think? Was justice served in the Larkin decision?

GOP convention team reaches out to women, vets

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With the Republican National Convention at last in full-throated roar, nominee Mitt Romney and his team reached out Wednesday to critical voting groups ? veterans, Hispanics and women ? while gleefully mocking the man he is out to defeat in November.

The GOP nominee ducked out of his own convention in Tampa to tell the American Legion Convention in Indianapolis that a Romney administration would do better by a military threatened with "reckless" defense cuts and by veterans hungry for jobs.

"This president's biggest failure is that he's not delivered those jobs," Romney said. "As president, I will get America to work again."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a top Hispanic voice in the GOP, made the rounds of morning talk shows to defend the GOP nominee's policies. And Ann Romney and Janna Ryan, the wife of Romney's running mate, teamed up to headline a "Women for Romney" fundraiser.

At the women's event, Mrs. Romney offered her husband as "the one person who is going to turn this country around," and promised that her husband would keep in mind the needs of women and families, if elected. Later, she attended a Latino Coalition lunch, where son Craig addressed guests in Spanish, and described his father as "a man you can trust."

Mrs. Romney told the Latino crowd that Democrats try to make it look like Republicans "don't care about this community. That's not true. We very much care about this community."

Latinos, she said, "are mistaken if they think they are going to be better off" if President Barack Obama wins re-election, she said.

The politics played out as Hurricane Isaac blew ashore on the Gulf Coast, weakening to a tropical storm by afternoon. Officials in Louisiana said that New Orleans' flood protection system was holding up as Isaac moved through the area.

Romney opened his remarks to the veterans by saying that while it appeared Isaac would not inflict the kind of damage Hurricane Katrina caused seven years ago, "this must be a heavy burden."

"Our country must do all we can to help them recover," he said.

Obama, campaigning before a college crowd in Charlottesville, Va., pledged that the government was "doing every single thing we need to do to make sure the folks down there are taken care of."

The president declared himself unimpressed with the GOP show unfolding in Tampa.

"You can listen very carefully, very hard, and you won't hear them offer a clear serious path forward," he said.

The main draw for Wednesday night's convention session is vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman and author of a tough budget that remakes the way the government spends money.

"I think people are going to like what they see because we are offering specific, bold solutions to get people back to work, to get this country back on the right track," Ryan said in a taped interview with WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee.

Ryan tested the microphones in the convention hall at midday as his children had fun at the podium.

Rubio, interviewed on "CBS This Morning," held out Ryan as a serious policy thinker who's "going to have a bunch of new fans across this country" after he speaks.

But Obama's re-election campaign released an online video casting Ryan, who is hugely popular with conservatives, as a politician from a "bygone era" whose budget proposals threaten Medicare and would gut funding for Planned Parenthood.

A poll by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post found Americans deeply divided about Ryan, whom they described as conservative, intelligent, fake, phony.

Romney's nomination now official, he was free at last to start dipping into his general-election pot of campaign cash.

"We're excited that now he's going to be able to spend money, both in English and in Spanish, to explain to people how his policies will help grow the economy, help small business, help people have the confidence to invest in the future," Rubio said."

To ensure the cash keeps rolling in, Ann Romney emailed supporters a fundraising appeal that echoed her Tuesday night speech to the convention.

"This man will not fail," she promised in the plea.

Obama, courting young voters for a second straight day, exhorted a crowd near the University of Virginia not to lose sight of the vision of hope and change that he laid out four years ago, citing policies he's implemented like student loan reforms and middle-class tax cuts.

"You can't get tired now, because we've got more work to do," he told the students.

Beyond Ryan, Wednesday's lineup includes 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Romney speaks Thursday night to bring down the curtain-closing balloons. Obama's Democratic National Convention follows next week in Charlotte, N.C.

Rice, warming up for her speech in an appearance on "CBS This Morning," said the voice of the United States in world affairs "has been muted" under this president, creating a chaotic and dangerous security environment.

Romney hit the same tone before the veterans.

"In the past four years, President Obama has allowed our leadership to diminish," he said. "In dealings with other nations, he has given trust where it is not earned, insult where it is not deserved and apology where it's not due."

Opinion polls show Obama getting high marks on national security after ending the war in Iraq, drawing down the conflict in Afghanistan and ordering the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Obama's allies did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

Obama campaign spokesman Jen Psaki called Romney and Ryan "the two most unpopular presidential nominee and vice presidential nominee in modern history. They have two days to rebrand who they are, what they stand for."

She said of Mrs. Romney's appeal to women: "Surrounding yourself with strong women is a great thing, but it doesn't change your positions."

First lady Michelle Obama, on her own outreach campaign, traveled to New York to promote her healthy-living initiatives while visiting "The Dr. Oz Show" and Rachael Ray's talk show. The programs will air next month, closer to the election.

Mrs. Obama also was making a guest appearance on Wednesday's "Late Show with David Letterman."

Among veterans, Gallup's tracking poll over the month of August has shown Romney leads Obama, 55 percent to 38 percent.

Obama has the advantage among women, and Hispanics strongly favor Obama.

Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of Hispanic votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Polls find the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race and voters narrowly favor Romney to handle it. In an AP-GfK poll taken Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said they trust Romney more on economic issues, to 44 percent for Obama. However, a Washington Post-ABC News in the days immediately before the convention found that 61 percent of registered voters said Obama was more likable, while 27 percent said Romney.

LONDON (AP) ? The Olympics have Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern games. The Paralympics have Sir Ludwig Guttmann.

Guttmann, a Jewish neurosurgeon who fled Nazi Germany, pioneered athletic competition as therapy for patients with spinal injuries and organized an archery competition for 16 patients at Britain's Stoke Mandeville hospital in 1948. From this humble start have come the Paralympic Games, which this week will bring more than 4,000 athletes from around the world to London.

"The Guttmann story is massive," said Olympic historian Martin Polley. "He was the one who linked rehab to competitive sport."

This month has been Guttmann's moment, what with a BBC film about his life, "The Best of Men," an exhibition at the Jewish Museum in London and his daughter, Eve Loeffler, being named mayor of the athletes village ? a sort of ambassador in chief who welcomes the participants for games that start Wednesday and end Sept. 9.

It follows a resurgence of interest in Guttmann, who escaped in the late 1930s and settled in Britain, where his research on treating spinal patients drew the attention of the government. Guttmann began working with injured soldiers at Stoke Mandeville hospital, just north of London, during World War II ? a time when suffering a spinal injury was considered a death sentence. Patients were discouraged from moving, leading to secondary infections from bed sores or from pneumonia.

Known for an authoritarian streak and his stubborn insistence on changing the status quo, Guttmann swept into the hospital and took patients off sedation, which had been administered to make them comfortable. But Guttmann was having none of that. No one was going to be comfortable.

"One patient told me 'I'm waiting for God almighty to take me up," the Times of London reported Guttmann as saying at a conference in 1962. "I told him 'While you are waiting, you can do some work'."

He made the patients sit up and work muscles. Seeking to keep them motivated, he hit upon competition as a way to make them work harder. He tried wheelchair field hockey, but when that became too violent, he got the patients involved in wheelchair basketball, Loeffler said.

It was tough and demanding, but grateful patients nicknamed him "Poppa." They were still paralyzed. But many lived ? and carried out Guttmann's wish that they become taxpayers.

Loeffler said her father was marked by his past. Many of his relatives perished in Auschwitz. He was driven, intent to give back to the country that had given his family refuge.

"I think that's another thing that made him work so hard," she said. "He was Hitler's gift to this country in a way, and he was determined to be a good British citizen."

On the same day that London opened its 1948 Olympics, Guttmann organized a competition for wheelchair athletes, which he called the Stoke Mandeville Games. They involved 16 patients taking part in archery. From those humble origins, the Paralympics have grown into a festival of sport involving 4,200 athletes from 166 teams. Though smaller than the Olympics ? which had more than twice the number of athletes ? London's event represents the largest field ever for the games.

The London event ? the first to have come as a result of a joint bid from the host city ? have also benefited from greater integration with the Olympics, particularly in terms of marketing and organization. London essentially connected the rings to the Agitos, the Paralympic symbol of three circling arcs ? a move that helped also spread the fairy dust of attention that the Olympics receive to the Paralympics as well. Queen Elizabeth II agreed to open the event, a reflection of their importance to the country.

Some 2.3 million tickets have been sold, the most ever, many to Britons new to Paralympic sport but who wanted to get an opportunity to see the glittering new stadiums and experience the excitement of first class sporting competition.

Britain's team is also strong. They were second in the Paralympic table at Beijing with 102 total medals, including 42 gold. The hometown crowd wants to see their athletes ? and of course wants to see them win.

Loeffler believes her father's vision has come to pass. And when she wanders the village, people recognize her, like Canadian athlete Jessica Vliegenthart, who saw Loeffler having her photograph taken in a smart navy jacket with its massive circular gold badge.

"Aren't you the daughter of ..." Vliegenthart asked, as two wheelchair basketball athletes drew their wheels in.

Loeffler nodded, her pride clear. Her father dreamed of an "Olympic Games for disabled men and women," and now a whole new generation is learning about him.

"Who but he could have imagined that it would have happened," she said. "I don't think anybody else could."

Britain embraced Guttmann, giving him a knighthood in 1966 and making him a fellow of the Royal Society ? honors of which he was extremely proud. Though he died in 1980, he lived long enough to see the Paralympics grow. The first full scale games took place in Rome in 1960, and souvenirs from the 1964 Tokyo Paralympics are part of the collection on display at the Jewish Museum.

"I just couldn't be more proud of him," Loeffler said. "I just hope he's up there watching it all."

North Dallas Homes: The bottom of the Real Estate market has ...

"Whether we're talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down."

--Warren Buffett, American business magnate

The buy low, sell high mentality of successful investors is the key to real estate success as well. With home prices on the rise, the "buy low" opportunities are slipping away. Most savvy buyers seem to be finally realizing there are some very nice homes out there at some very nice prices.

The latest evidence came when home sales shot up in June and July while inventory continues to fall. Anyone contemplating a purchase should not dally. Median prices of homes are on the rise.

Mortgage rates are also rising. Rates have gone up about 1/2% in the past 10 days. Keep in mind that a 1% difference in your 30 year mortgage interest rate equals about a 10% difference in price. As rates go up, you'll be able to afford less home.

Japanese ambassador's car targeted in Beijing: official

A car carrying the Japanese ambassador to China was targeted in Beijing on Monday by a man who ripped off the vehicle's Japanese flag, a foreign ministry official said.

The ambassador, Uichiro Niwa, was not hurt in the attack, the official said.

His car was forced to stop by two vehicles. A man stepped out of one and ripped off the Japanese flag, the official said.

The Japanese embassy filed a protest with the Chinese foreign ministry and demanded such an incident is never repeated, the official said.

The attack comes amid widespread anti-Japan demonstrations in China over a disputed East China Sea island chain known in China as Diaoyu and in Japan as Senkaku.

Tensions between Japan and China flared earlier this month after five pro-Beijing activists who landed on the uninhabited Japanese-controlled islands were arrested by Japanese police and later deported, along with nine others who accompanied them.

For Paralympian Donovan Tildesley, 'vision' means seizing day ...

Gary Kingston

As a blind person, Donovan Tildesley utilizes a talking computer, which features a digitalized voice reading off the screen.

?To someone sighted who hears it for the first time, it sounds rather ridiculous,? says the Paralympic swimmer/golfer/skier/insurance broker/motivational speaker and, most recently, standup comic. ?So one of my jokes has to do with ?How does a blind person look at porn?? And then I imitate this voice reading a [porn] story off the screen.

?It?s a little offensive,? he adds with a laugh. ?It?s like ?Who the hell would go there?? ? Well, as you are about to find out, there are very few places Tildes-ley, a 28-year-old adventurer and ladies? man and a guy with limit-less vision, won?t go.

Double black diamond ski runs. Parachuting out of a plane. A planned hike of Kilimanjaro. Or, a joke about a female insurance agent getting a boob job.

?I work in an office with a bunch of women and I answer the phone a lot of times. We?ll get calls from clients ?Oh, I was speaking to the girl, uh, the smallish, red-headed girl.? ?And I tell them I?ll have to ask around the office. ?I kept asking and no such person worked there.? But then I found out later in the day that my colleague dyed her hair and got breast implants that weekend.?

Now, his act isn?t all blue humour suitable for college campuses and HBO. There is some family-friendly fare. Like the joke about him being a pretty bad kid.

?My parents had to come up with alternate ways of disciplining me,? says Tildesley, who has been blind since birth as a result of being born with-out retinas. ?They couldn?t exactly take away my Nintendo because I didn?t play the damn thing. And I couldn?t watch TV. So, whenever I stepped out of line or did something foolish, they?d go and move the furniture on me.?

Ba-da-boom.

Tildesley, a five-time Paralym-pic medallist in the pool, is about to compete in his fourth Games starting Thursday in London. But for a young man once defined by how fast he could swim without benefit of sight, so much has changed in the four years since he was Canada?s flagbearer during the opening ceremonies at Beijing.

He got a job at Buntain Insurance, went skydiving for his 25th birthday, took up golf, spent seven months in 2011 at the Colorado Centre for the Blind learning independent living and tried his hand at cracking wise on a stage.

All of which means that earning a medal this time around, at what he says will be his last Paralympics, might be tough. He?s not sad about it. It?s just that priorities change. You get older. New challenges await.

?I can?t be an athlete for the rest of my life.?

He was an inspirational, vocal leader in Beijing, extremely honoured that his teammates felt him worthy of being the flagbearer.

?It?s not going to be the same high,? he says of London. ?I?m going to be in a different mind space. Four years ago, swimming was very much my life. I?m not saying it isn?t any more, but I?m at the point in my life right now where I know that winning a medal is no guarantee.

?This Games is icing on the cake. If I can get up on that podium, I?d be ecstatic, but if I can somehow motivate other athletes on my team, other younger swimmers, get them excited to perform to their personal bests, then I will have done some of my job over there.

?The other thing is I?m in the insurance industry now. How can I tie this success in the pool to growing my own book of business? How can being a Paralympian help me to become a better salesman for myself and my company? What can I do with social media to increase that? So I?m looking at it from the holistic experience.?

NEEDS OWN APARTMENT

A preppy looking Tildesley ? a collared shirt, dress shorts and loafers ? is seated at the outdoor patio of a restaurant on Broadway, having just finished lunch with a female colleague from another Buntain office, when we sit down to talk.

He and Christina Cavaco, who is off to a new job in Calgary soon, have known each for three years, but become really good friends in the last few months through extended conversations about their shared passion for sales, people and personal growth.

Cavaco is half-Italian, half-Portuguese and incredibly attractive. And you can?t help but think that it?s a shame that Donovan can?t see this woman. But in a sense he can, just in his own way.

?It seems so funny when he talks about me,? Cavaco says in an interview days later when asked if she believes Donovan appreciates her beauty. ?It makes me feel a little weird, makes me go red. I say ?You can?t see me,? but he says ?I can hear it in the way you talk.?

?With women, he?s not shy at all. He?s obviously blind, but he?ll go up to any lady and start talking to her. He says he can tell by her voice and the smell of her scent if she?s attractive.

?He?s such a great guy to hang out with, just amazing.?

Tildesley, who still lives with his parents in Point Grey, says his only difficulty with women is that he doesn?t have a home of his own for them to take him back to.

He?s looking for a place, but needs one that is close to work and the Arbutus Club pool.

?I have a good feeling that after this Games, this will be the year it happens. Plus, it makes me more marketable to the opposite sex. A guy who lives at home? It?s harder to find dates.?

To prepare for his independence, he spent those seven months at the school in Colorado, although it wasn?t quite what he had expected.

?I went down there expecting to meet blind go-getters who wanted to start their own businesses and wanted to make tons of money. But I met people who had lost their sight later in life who didn?t know what to do, kids who were just out of high school trying to figure their way in life, people with other learning disabilities. I remember getting there the first day and half the people didn?t even know what the Paralympics were. So, it was a rather humbling experience.?

He did learn how to cook ? the final task was cooking a meal for 60 people ? and fell in love with Colorado and its spectacular outdoors. He climbed a 4,200-metre mountain with Eric Weihenmayer, the first blind person to reach the summit of Everest in 2001 and a man who starred last year in the ABC reality show Expedition Impossible.

?Honestly, if I didn?t have a job to come to back here and a Paralympics to train for, I would have stayed in Colorado. While the school wasn?t quite what I expected, I got the life experience and it instilled in me this new confidence and this greater appreciation for the world around me and helped me to feel more comfortable in my new skin.?

On his return, he joined friend Amber Weland ? ?one of the most naturally funny people I know,? he says ? at a comedy show at the Fray on Fraser last December. ?We kind of turned to each other and said these guys suck and she says ?you and me in 2012, we?re going to put on some shows.? ? Weland and Tildesley, by the way, met a few years back at a Board of Trade function when she offered him her elbow as he was getting out of a taxi.

?We became fast friends from there,? says Weland. ?That day, he ended up sort of trash-talking me into doing a day of skiing with him up at Whistler. I?m a pretty good snowboarder and he often leaves me behind. I tell him he makes a great ski buddy. With him, I can get up in the morning and not have to do my hair or put on mascara. As long as I put on deodorant, I?m okay.?

One night last February, Tildesley beat out a dozen other budding comics at the Fray ? ?I guess I had a lot of friends out that night who drank a lot of drinks? ? winning $100 and a chance to perform in the finals at the Edgewater Casino. He didn?t win and has been a bit too busy recently to get back on stage, but hopes to find some time after the Paralympics. ?I?m constantly trying to think of new material that?s not too offensive.?

Tildesley, who has a BA in English literature from UBC, was set to take a job with RBC in the Visa call centre after Beijing when his family?s neighbour, Gordon Buntain, suggested he come work for him and help develop his company?s travel medical insurance.

It hasn?t been easy ? finding adapt-able software, dealing with potential roadblocks put up by regulatory agencies. But the blunt-spoken, high-energy Buntain has backed Tildesley at every step.

?I told him ?you can do anything you wish, but let?s dream big,? ? said Bun-tain. ?Yes, there?s going to be hurdles, but I?ll support you.?

Tildesley says it has been challenging. ?But over time, I?ve figured out that I have a passion for sales. I absolutely love people and building relationships, getting to know them and helping to solve their problems.?

?IN THE BEST SHAPE POSSIBLE?

Tildesley took up golf a few years ago. He hasn?t played as much as he?d like, but this spring, Buntain sponsored a hole at a fundraising tournament for Donovan?s old school, St. George?s.

?Basically, it was a longest drive com-petition,? says Tildesley. ?I would get up and hit a shot and people would try to hit their ball past mine. It was called Beat the Blind Guy.?

Utilizing a sighted guide, Tildes-ley loves ripping down the slopes at Whistler, but says he has no interest in becoming a Winter Paralympian.

?Gates scare the hell out of me. Ski-ing?s like my therapy. I like to go up to the alpine and cut down the steepest and the deepest. I?d be worried that taking it on as a serious sport would take the fun out of it for me and I need that in my life.?

But in the next breath, he says with a big smile, ?You know what I think would be a good sport? Blind ski cross. Imagine a bunch of blind guys going through a gate and all trying to stay on course and not run into each other.?

In London, Tildesley, who competes in the S11 class with other totally blind swimmers, will race the 100-metre butterfly, the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

He owns freestyle world records at 800 and 1,500 metres, but those distances aren?t contested at the Paralympics. In Beijing, he earned bronze at 400 metres and was fourth in the 100. He was also fifth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 100 butterfly.

Spaniard Mohamed Enhamed won four gold in Beijing, two in world record time. He is back, as are key competitors from Ukraine, China and Argentina. There is also a strong new-comer from the U.S. in Brad Snyder, who was blinded last September while serving in Afghanistan and who had captained the Naval Academy swim team in his senior year.

?I think I?m in the best shape possible,? says Tildesley. ?Am I as spry as I was four years ago, eight years ago? Maybe not. But I?ve done the work. I?ve put in the metres. I?ve just got to decide in my own head that I can stand up and race as fast as I can and get myself on the podium.?

He says he?ll probably swim for one more year after the Paralympics, go to one more world championships. Then, he?d like to give back to the sport by serving on some athlete councils.

?I think a lot can be done for advocacy in the sport. I wish there was a way to get more blind people involved in sport because it?s really done so much for my life. It?s not only physically and mentally beneficial, but it?s opened so many doors.

?I wouldn?t be the person I am today, have the friends I do today without my involvement in sport and the confidence it?s instilled in me.?

Flight attendant's career landing in Guinness Book

HONOLULU (AP) ? A flight attendant is landing in the Guinness Book of World Records after his 63 years of moving about the cabin ended in his home state of Hawaii.

Eighty-three-year-old Ron Akana (ah-KAHN'-ah) finished his career as the longest-serving flight attendant for any U.S. carrier over the weekend on a United Airlines flight from Denver to Kauai.

The Honolulu-born Akana says he's been told he will go into the record book in October.

After returning home to Colorado, he spent Tuesday writing thank you notes for the all well-wishes from passengers who heard about his longevity through an in-flight announcement.

He plans to spend the rest of his retirement traveling.

Akana decided to retire when he was offered a buyout. He was one of the first male flight attendants at United.

Hurricane Isaac delays start of Republican National Convention in Tampa

As in 2008, Republicans scramble to adjust speaking and travel schedules to cope with the hurricane. The vote to formally nominate Mitt Romney shifts to Tuesday ? for now. Stay tuned.

The convention will convene Monday but suspend all activities until a time to be determined on Tuesday, a senior strategist for Mitt Romney, the chair of the national Republican Party, and the convention?s president said in a conference call with reporters.

?We believe that even though we were planning on doing it four days, we think we can absolutely do it in three,? said Russ Schriefer, the senior Romney strategist, on the call.

The cancellation marks the second consecutive Republican National Convention to have a first day cancelled due to storms. In 2008, hurricane Gustav hit landfall in Louisiana just as the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn., was to begin.

Now, hurricane Issac brings up a few logistical questions on a stage where logistics matter: Conventions for both parties are highly choreographed showcases of the party in which the order of speakers, for example, is assembled carefully to ensure that both party insiders and the viewing public see an appealing image.

Monday was the day scheduled for the vote to formally nominate Mitt Romney as the Republican Party?s presidential candidate ? that vote will move back to Tuesday, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said.

No state delegations have backed out of the convention, and the organizers said they were working to secure alternative transportation and accommodation options should the need arise.

?We have a lot of people that need to plan,? Mr. Priebus said. ?We?re not going to put delegates on a bunch of buses over the bridges between Clearwater and St. [Petersburg] when we can?t predict how severe the wind is going to be."

The speaking schedule, too, needs to be rejiggered. Sen. Rand Paul (R) of Kentucky, beloved by libertarians and the object of some presidential speculation, and House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, among others, were both slated to speak Monday night.

Mr. Schriefer said they would attempt to fit all of the speakers into the remaining three days and may open official convention business earlier than previously planned to accommodate more speakers.

In an e-mail Saturday evening, Priebus noted that the convention was working with local, state, and federal agencies to determine the path forward. The RNC said it would be providing a revised convention schedule as early as Sunday.

Before Saturday?s announcement, the storm had already changed convention plans in smaller ways. Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) gave up his speaking slot on Monday night to monitor the storm. Vice President Joe Biden cancelled his Tuesday trip to Florida to free up law enforcement to handle Isaac?s potential impact.

?Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area,? Priebus said in the e-mail.

(AP) ? Three preseason games and counting. No trips to the end zone for the New York Jets.

After a couple of close calls, including a late drive by Tim Tebow in the final seconds, the Jets failed to score a touchdown again as the Carolina Panthers held on for a 17-12 victory Sunday night.

"Well, I've said it before," starting quarterback Mark Sanchez said. "We're saving our good stuff for the regular season."

Whew.

That should relieve Jets fans who might be downright nervous after their team became the first since the 1977 Atlanta Falcons, according to NBC, to go without a touchdown in its first three preseason games.

Sanchez, Tebow and the starters will not play Thursday night in the preseason finale at Philadelphia, so the Jets (0-3) certainly have a lot to work on before the regular-season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 9. All of that sneaky wildcat stuff the Jets have planned with Tebow will have to wait a few more weeks ? when the games actually count.

"When Week 1 comes around, all bets are off," wide receiver Santonio Holmes said, "and the guns are firing."

They certainly weren't in this one ? for either team.

"Any time you can hold a team to field goals, I think you've accomplished something," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said.

Tebow, who entered in the third quarter, got the fans at MetLife Stadium fired up with a dazzling 20-yard run in the fourth, but threw an interception three plays later.

Tebow faced a third-and-16 from the Jets 34 and ran around in the backfield, eluded a tackle attempt by Ryan Van Bergen and then took off and slipped through a few other tackle attempts by the Panthers (2-1) before being taken down for a 20-yard gain by Reggie Smith. Tebow pumped both fists and yelled at the crowd chanting "Tee-boww! Tee-boww!"

But three plays later, Tebow was intercepted easily by Smith.

"It was kind of good news, bad news with Tim," Jets coach Rex Ryan said.

Tebow got the Jets in scoring position again in the closing moments, again with the fans chanting his name, but threw four straight incompletions from the Panthers 27 to end the game.

"I felt like we had it the whole time," Tebow said. "I still feel like we should have had it. I feel like we just came up one or two plays short."

Tebow finished 4 of 14 for 55 yards and the interception, but certainly had the Panthers nervous. He ran five times for 45 yards.

"It's a nightmare," Rivera said of facing Tebow. "Heck, I was in San Diego trying to stop him when he was in Denver. He's an exciting football player. There are things he does that brings excitement and gets his teammates going. He's a guy if you keep the game close gives you a chance to win. He's a different type of football player, a different type of quarterback."

While the Jets (No. 17 in the AP Pro32) didn't get into the end zone, two fans nearly did. Two men ? wearing only underwear and sneakers ? were tackled by security behind the end zone before they could get onto the field of play. One was handcuffed quickly and led off the field, while the other struggled for a few minutes before being led away.

Cam Newton was held mostly in check by the Jets, going 6 of 15 for 60 yards, but he got the Panthers (No. 20) into the end zone with a touchdown pass to Louis Murphy.

"Offensively, we have to do a better job sustaining drives," Newton said. "We got some first downs, but we stalled at the end."

Backup QB Derek Anderson put Carolina ahead to stay with a 1-yard touchdown toss to Gary Barnidge, making it 17-12 with 11:31 left.

Sanchez played well into the third quarter, but got no help from his receivers, who dropped a few passes. He finished 11 of 18 for 123 yards and an interception.

He was done in on consecutive plays by his own wideouts. First, on second-and-10 from the Jets 38, Sanchez hit Holmes in the mask and the receiver couldn't corral the pass. On the next play, Sanchez hit Stephen Hill in the chest, but the rookie couldn't control the ball and it bounced off his arms and into the hands of cornerback Captain Munnerlyn.

Five plays later, Newton connected with Murphy, starting for the injured Steve Smith, for a 9-yard touchdown that put the Panthers up 10-9 with 1:16 left in the opening half.

"Any time you don't have Steve Smith, it throws some of the timing off," Rivera said. "We do miss Steve. We'll be honest about that."

Jonathan Stewart was injured on the drive, twisting his right ankle when he took a handoff and went down the right sideline for 7 yards before he was knocked out of bounds on a hard hit by LaRon Landry.

Rivera said X-rays "were completely negative" and he didn't believe it was a high ankle sprain.

The Jets lost three key players to injuries as tight ends Dustin Keller (hamstring) and Josh Baker (right knee) and linebacker David Harris (ankle) all left in the first half.

Baker appeared to sustain the most serious injury in the second quarter when he was hit on the right knee by a Panthers defender while trying to catch a pass from Sanchez in the end zone. Baker stayed down for several minutes, was helped to the sideline and then carted to the locker room.

Notes: Josh Brown, competing with Nick Folk for the Jets' kicking job, made a 34-yarder but missed a 45-yard attempt wide left in the third quarter. ... Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum needed a few stitches after injuring an arm earlier Sunday while riding his bike with his family. ... Panthers rookie LB Luke Kuechly was in on a game-high 10 tackles.
