3 ways to avoid surgery and eliminate pain | Natural Health 365

Tue. Nov. 27, 2012 by Jonathan Landsman

Safe Body Detoxification(NaturalHealth365) Modern society has been brainwashed into believing that toxic drugs and risky surgical procedures are the only way to alleviate pain. But, the truth is, there are literally dozens of highly-effective, natural ways to eliminate pain fast without harming the body. Given the proper tools ? the human body has tremendous power to heal itself.

Promote pain relief by sleeping at the right time ? every night

The best time for your body to repair itself is between 10 pm and 2 am. Typically, after sunset, you will begin to feel sleepy as melatonin levels begin to rise within the body. This is your opportunity to get ready for sleep. Here are some great sleeping tips ? especially if you suffer with physical aches and pains:

Avoid watching T.V. or working on your computer past 9 pm (8 pm would be even better)

Remove all electronic devices from your bedroom (including T.V.?s) to make your sleeping area a place of relaxation. Keep in mind, electromagnetic pollution (EMF) has a intense (negative) effect on our neurochemistry.

Watch the sunset or, better yet, take a 10 minute walk around sunset to promote melatonin production and relaxation.

Stop drinking caffeine or eating too much food ? late at night. If your stomach is busy digesting food ? you will have a difficult time going to sleep.

Adjust your sleep habits. If you go to sleep past 10 pm and wake up later than 6 am ? make 10 ? 15 minutes adjustments (each week) until you reach the goal of 10 pm bedtime and 6 am wake up time.

Improve your range of motion to eliminate pain

With my background in exercise science, I am often asked, ?what can I do to get rid of this physical pain?? My answer is always the same ? ?do you stretch?? I?m simply amazed how many people go to doctors and physical therapy facilities without learning a thing about how to improve their muscular flexibility. For example, if you suffer from low back pain, it?s a great idea to loosen up your butt, upper leg and calf muscles.

Tight muscles put a tremendous strain on the body ? so loosen up! If you need help ? I suggest hiring a qualified personal trainer or studying the programs offered by Gray Cook, Mark Verstegen and Michaelle Edwards.

Use the power of the mind to heal the body

Now don?t get me wrong ? what you?re about to read does not give you the license to eat heavily processed foods that promote inflammation; forget about nutritional supplements or other healthy lifestyle habits. But, what I am suggesting is that you believe in the power of consciousness. In other words, believe in yourself!

If you want to improve the quality of your life ? never underestimate the power of prayer, faith and love. If you doubt these words ? watch the video (below) to forever change your perspective on what is truly possible.

10-year-old girl's laptop confiscated after copyright offense

Police in Helsinki?seized?the laptop of a young girl during a search of her family's home last week, according to her father.?The alleged?offense? Using the?popular BitTorrent website The Pirate Bay to download a single album.

Last year, 9-year-old Julietta?came across a torrent on The Pirate Bay after searching on Google?for Finnish pop star Chisu's latest album. The download failed to work, and she and her father went and bought the album together shortly afterwards.?Unbeknownst to them,?Finland's Copyright Information and?Anti-Piracy Centre (known as CIAPC, as well as its Finnish acronym, TTVK) had already?taken notice.

The events are related by the girl's father,?Aki Wequ Nylund,?in?a public?Facebook post. (Though Google Translate's Finnish is not very good, an account of the translated?story?was posted at copyright and BitTorrent news blog?TorrentFreak.)

That spring, a letter arrived from the TTVK?alleging that the Nylund's account had been linked to a copyright infringement. The letter gave the option to pay a settlement of ?600 and sign a non-disclosure agreement ? a common tactic used by copyright holders that removes the need for formal charges.

Nylund contacted the?TTVK?lawyer to contest the matter, but?the TTVK continued its pursuit of damages. Last Tuesday morning, he found a pair of Finnish police officers standing at his doorstep.

The police presented a search?warrant, entered, and identified the girl's Winnie?the?Pooh-decorated laptop as the object of their search, and confiscated it.

Unsurprisingly, the events have drawn criticism locally and abroad. Finnish Internet rights watchdog Electronic Frontier Finland denounced the actions of the TTVK in a statement and blog post, calling attention to the arbitrary nature of the settlements and their use?as a scare tactic. They also point out that?Nylund's acknowledgment?in this case notwithstanding, an IP address used to track an infringement cannot be linked to a person's identity.

The TTVK's executive director defended the actions in comments to Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, saying that TTVK and the police were only working to enforce the law.?

Chisu, the pop star whose album was at the center of the controversy, expressed in a Facebook post that she supported copyright law but apologized for the situation.

Niko?Nordstr?m, CEO of Warner Music Finland, acknowledged (also via Chisu's Facebook page)?the limits of IP-based enforcement, but said?"this procedure is currently the only way to tackle illegal downloading" (translation by Google).

Had the TTVK known that the infringing party in this situation was a young?girl, might they?have taken a softer approach? In past cases,?U.S. media associations have not?made accommodations for minors, either.

As for Julietta's lost laptop, an anonymous benefactor sent a brand-new MacBook Pro to replace it. Her father reports that she is already putting it to use, playing online with her friends. An administrator at The Pirate Bay promised VIP privileges to her as well if she wants them?? ?although after this experience, it would be understandable if she opted not to take advantage of the offer.

Texas cop accused of cursing teen in video

By Mark Schnyder, NBCDFW.com

A Texas police department will investigate claims that an officer cursed and used excessive force against a teen, after the teen?s mother said she will make a complaint on Monday.

Andrew Rodriguez, 17, resisted arrest?when police tried to take him into custody on an old trespassing warrant, according to his mother Kelly Pope.

A video of the incident taken by Rodriguez?s friend shows an officer in control of Rodriguez on the ground when another officer comes running over.

Read more news from NBC Dallas-Ft. Worth

?He knows he handled it badly at first, that he should have been a little more cooperative,? said Pope, who lives in Hurst, a town located between Dallas and Ft. Worth. "[The officer] comes up at a jolting sprint, kneed him right in the back of the head and as you can see on the video and says, 'If you move I?m gonna bleep bleep kill you,? Pope said, describing the video.

The officer, who identified himself on the video as "Arnold 654," also used a gay slur after the teen used it.

Pope plans to go to the Hurst Police Department on Monday to speak directly with the police chief about the incident.

"This is not behavior that the city of Hurst promotes or condones in any way,? said the Hurst Police in a statement to NBCDFW. ?We strive to build a stronger, safer community through our work around the city and will continue to do so through appropriate action.? The incident will be investigated internally."

LONDON???Could computers become cleverer than humans and take over the world? Or is that just the stuff of science fiction?

Philosophers and scientists at Britain's Cambridge University think the question deserves serious study. A proposed Center for the Study of Existential Risk will bring together experts to consider the ways in which super intelligent technology, including artificial intelligence, could "threaten our own existence," the institution said Sunday.

"In the case of artificial intelligence, it seems a reasonable prediction that some time in this or the next century intelligence will escape from the constraints of biology," Cambridge philosophy professor Huw Price said.

When that happens, "we're no longer the smartest things around," he said, and will risk being at the mercy of "machines that are not malicious, but machines whose interests don't include us."

Fears that machines could overtake humans have long been the subject of science fiction ? the computer HAL in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey," for example, is one of film's best-known computer threats.

Price acknowledged that many people believe his concerns are far-fetched, but insisted the potential risks are too serious to brush away.

"It tends to be regarded as a flakey concern, but given that we don't know how serious the risks are, that we don't know the time scale, dismissing the concerns is dangerous. What we're trying to do is to push it forward in the respectable scientific community," he said.

While Price said the exact nature of the risks is difficult to predict, he said that advanced technology could be a threat when computers start to direct resources towards their own goals, at the expense of human concerns like environmental sustainability.

He compared the risk to the way humans have threatened the survival of other animals by spreading across the planet and using up natural resources that other animals depend upon.

Price is co-founding the project together with Cambridge professor of cosmology and astrophysics Martin Rees and Jann Tallinn, one of the founders of the internet phone service Skype.

The university said Sunday the center's launch is planned next year.?

How Obesity Became Newest Killer In Africa Your Health Journal ...

From The Alaska Dispatch?..

Obesity rates are skyrocketing in sub-Saharan Africa, as in most parts of the world.

But here the obesity problem has an unusual and particularly worrying shape.

While child hunger has traditionally been the more pressing problem in African countries, researchers say that malnourished, growth-stunted children are turning into overweight adults.

This means that countries still wracked by malnutrition, as well as infectious diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS, are facing a battery of chronic health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.

What?s more, new research has found that babies born to overweight or obese mothers are far more likely to die ? a devastating problem in sub-Saharan African countries that already have some of the world?s highest infant mortality rates.

Dr. Zandile Mchiza, a senior scientist with the Medical Research Council of South Africa, said that research shows ?undernutrition leads to obesity,? but the connection is not yet fully understood.

Mchiza said in places where malnutrition in children is high, adults are more likely to be overweight or obese. In Africa, adult women are far more likely to be obese than men.

?As you grow up, if you were stunted at birth and then exposed to an abundance of food, you gain weight,? Mchiza said.

Factors such as food choices, genetics and social conditions all come into play, along with cultural beliefs ? for example, that a woman must be chubby to be considered beautiful and healthy.

?People strive to overeat so they?re not labeled as poor,? she explained.

The paucity of data remains a significant problem, and so Mchiza has launched the Africa Taskforce on Obesity Research to link researchers from countries around sub-Saharan Africa, including Ghana and Kenya.

In South Africa, the most developed country in sub-Saharan Africa, 61 percent of adults are obese, according to research released last month by GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical company. The survey found that 78 percent of obese people considered themselves healthy.

While obesity rates in sub-Saharan Africa are for the most part still very low by global standards, they are projected to jump dramatically in the next two decades along with growing urbanization and development.

Medical experts are worried about the rise of obesity-related illnesses, such as heart attacks, strokes, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. In many countries, health care systems are already overburdened and lacking in resources.

A study published in The Lancet, a medical journal, last month concluded that babies born to overweight and obese mothers ?are markedly more likely to die.? Surprisingly, researchers detected no increase of neonatal death for the babies of underweight mothers.

Lead author Jenny Cresswell and colleagues looked at figures from 27 sub-Saharan African countries in what they said was the first known study of its kind for the region.

Creating a Balloonlike Plug to Hold Back Floodwaters

By Fritzie Andrade

Protecting Tunnels Against Disaster: A look at an inflatable device that could save tunnels from flooding.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. ? With a few dull thuds, the one-ton bag of high-strength fabric tumbled from the wall of the mock subway tunnel and onto the floor. Then it began to grow.

As air flowed into it through a hose, the bundle inflated until it was crammed tight inside the 16-foot-diameter tunnel, looking like the filling in a giant concrete-and-steel cannoli.

The three-minute procedure, conducted on a chilly morning this month in an airport hangar not far from West Virginia University, was the latest test of a device that may someday help guard real tunnels during disasters ? whether a terrorist strike or a storm like Hurricane Sandy, whose wind-driven surge of water overwhelmed New York City?s subway system, shutting it down for days.

?The goal is to provide flooding protection for transportation tunnels,? said John Fortune, who is managing the project for the federal Department of Homeland Security?s Science and Technology Directorate.

The idea is a simple one: rather than retrofitting tunnels with metal floodgates or other expensive structures, the project aims to use a relatively cheap inflatable plug to hold back floodwaters.

In theory, it would be like blowing up a balloon inside a tube. But in practice, developing a plug that is strong, durable, quick to install and foolproof to deploy is a difficult engineering task, one made even more challenging because of the pliable, relatively lightweight materials required.

?Water is heavy, there?s a lot of pressure,? said Greg Holter, an engineer with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory who helps manage the project. ?So it?s not as simple as just inflating and filling the space. The plug has to be able to withstand the pressure of the water behind it.?

The idea has been in development for more than five years ? this test was the 21st ? and Dr. Fortune says there are at least a few more years of testing and design work ahead. If the plugs are shown to be effective, they will be made available to transit systems around the country; at least initially, they are expected to cost about $400,000 each.

?We have frequent conversations with folks in mass transit agencies, the true experts in the field, on how this would be deployed,? Dr. Fortune said, although he declined to name specific agencies, citing the antiterrorism aspect of the project.

Adam Lisberg, the chief spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs New York City?s transit systems, said the damage caused by the storm ?is certainly going to focus our attention? on ways to protect the subways. ?But it?s way too early to talk about any particular technology that?s been proposed,? he said.

In all, seven of the city?s 14 under-river subway tunnels were flooded during the storm, as were several major highway tunnels. Dr. Fortune said that plugs might work for highway tunnels, too, but that the larger size of those tunnels created additional technical challenges that would have to be overcome.

Work on the plug began in 2007, after Ever J. Barbero, a West Virginia professor whose specialty is the use of advanced materials in engineering, was contacted by a Homeland Security official looking for outside-the-box ideas on ways to keep a subway system from flooding if an underwater tunnel were breached ? by a terrorist bomb, for example.

?I didn?t know anything about this,? he said. ?Then I found out what happened in Chicago.?

Dr. Barbero was referring to a 1992 episode in which an abandoned freight tunnel under the Chicago River was breached by a crew sinking bridge pilings. That led to a flood that caused close to $2 billion in damage to downtown buildings as the water spread underground.

Dr. Barbero came up with an idea and shared it with Homeland Security officials. ?I said, ?We?ll put an air bag in a tunnel,??? he recalled. The department was intrigued ? officials were familiar with European efforts to develop plugs to seal tunnels from gas and smoke after a series of deadly tunnel fires ? and decided to finance the project. About $8 million has been spent so far.

Dr. Barbero realized that the forces exerted on the pressurized plug, and the need to rely on friction against the tunnel walls to keep it in place under the onslaught of floodwaters, meant that it had to be made from very tough materials. Experts from ILC Dover, a company in Delaware that makes high-strength soft structures like spacesuits and the force-absorbing air bags used for some of the Mars rover landings, suggested fabric made from Vectran, a strong but lightweight yarn spun from a liquid-crystal polymer.

But the first full-scale plug, made with a single layer of Vectran, failed during a pressure test in 2010. ?It ripped right down the middle, from back to front,? Dr. Fortune said.

So Dr. Barbero and ILC came up with a three-layer plug, with the outer layer consisting of woven Vectran belts. It is designed so that the tearing of one belt will not cause a catastrophic failure.

Scientists See Advances in Deep Learning, a Part of Artificial Intelligence

Hao Zhang/The New York Times

A voice recognition program translated a speech given by Richard F. Rashid, Microsoft?s top scientist, into Mandarin Chinese.

Using an artificial intelligence technique inspired by theories about how the brain recognizes patterns, technology companies are reporting startling gains in fields as diverse as computer vision, speech recognition and the identification of promising new molecules for designing drugs.

The advances have led to widespread enthusiasm among researchers who design software to perform human activities like seeing, listening and thinking. They offer the promise of machines that converse with humans and perform tasks like driving cars and working in factories, raising the specter of automated robots that could replace human workers.

The technology, called deep learning, has already been put to use in services like Apple?s Siri virtual personal assistant, which is based on Nuance Communications? speech recognition service, and in Google?s Street View, which uses machine vision to identify specific addresses.

But what is new in recent months is the growing speed and accuracy of deep-learning programs, often called artificial neural networks or just ?neural nets? for their resemblance to the neural connections in the brain.

?There has been a number of stunning new results with deep-learning methods,? said Yann LeCun, a computer scientist at New York University who did pioneering research in handwriting recognition at Bell Laboratories. ?The kind of jump we are seeing in the accuracy of these systems is very rare indeed.?

Artificial intelligence researchers are acutely aware of the dangers of being overly optimistic. Their field has long been plagued by outbursts of misplaced enthusiasm followed by equally striking declines.

In the 1960s, some computer scientists believed that a workable artificial intelligence system was just 10 years away. In the 1980s, a wave of commercial start-ups collapsed, leading to what some people called the ?A.I. winter.?

But recent achievements have impressed a wide spectrum of computer experts. In October, for example, a team of graduate students studying with the University of Toronto computer scientist Geoffrey E. Hinton won the top prize in a contest sponsored by Merck to design software to help find molecules that might lead to new drugs.

From a data set describing the chemical structure of 15 different molecules, they used deep-learning software to determine which molecule was most likely to be an effective drug agent.

The achievement was particularly impressive because the team decided to enter the contest at the last minute and designed its software with no specific knowledge about how the molecules bind to their targets. The students were also working with a relatively small set of data; neural nets typically perform well only with very large ones.

?This is a really breathtaking result because it is the first time that deep learning won, and more significantly it won on a data set that it wouldn?t have been expected to win at,? said Anthony Goldbloom, chief executive and founder of Kaggle, a company that organizes data science competitions, including the Merck contest.

Advances in pattern recognition hold implications not just for drug development but for an array of applications, including marketing and law enforcement. With greater accuracy, for example, marketers can comb large databases of consumer behavior to get more precise information on buying habits. And improvements in facial recognition are likely to make surveillance technology cheaper and more commonplace.

Artificial neural networks, an idea going back to the 1950s, seek to mimic the way the brain absorbs information and learns from it. In recent decades, Dr. Hinton, 64 (a great-great-grandson of the 19th-century mathematician George Boole, whose work in logic is the foundation for modern digital computers), has pioneered powerful new techniques for helping the artificial networks recognize patterns.

Modern artificial neural networks are composed of an array of software components, divided into inputs, hidden layers and outputs. The arrays can be ?trained? by repeated exposures to recognize patterns like images or sounds.

These techniques, aided by the growing speed and power of modern computers, have led to rapid improvements in speech recognition, drug discovery and computer vision.

Deep-learning systems have recently outperformed humans in certain limited recognition tests.

Last year, for example, a program created by scientists at the Swiss A.?I. Lab at the University of Lugano won a pattern recognition contest by outperforming both competing software systems and a human expert in identifying images in a database of German traffic signs.

The winning program accurately identified 99.46 percent of the images in a set of 50,000; the top score in a group of 32 human participants was 99.22 percent, and the average for the humans was 98.84 percent.

9 more Iraq, Afghan war veterans joining Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As Tammy Duckworth sees it, her path to Congress began when she awoke in the fall of 2004 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She was missing both of her legs and faced the prospect of losing her right arm.

Months of agonizing therapy lay ahead. As the highest-ranking double amputee in the ward, Maj. Duckworth became the go-to person for soldiers complaining of substandard care and bureaucratic ambivalence.

Soon, she was pleading their cases to federal lawmakers, including her state's two U.S. senators at the time ? Democrats Dick Durbin and Barack Obama of Illinois. Obama arranged for her to testify at congressional hearings. Durbin encouraged her to run for office.

She lost her first election, but six years later gave it another try and now is one of nine veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who will serve in next year's freshman class in the of House of Representatives.

Veterans' groups say the influx of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans is welcome because it comes at a time when the overall number of veterans in Congress is on a steep and steady decline. In the mid-1970s, the vast majority of lawmakers tended to be veterans.

For example, the 95th Congress, which served in 1977-78, had more than 400 veterans among its 535 members, according to the American Legion. The number of veterans next year in Congress will come to just more than 100. Most served during the Vietnam War era. In all, 16 served in Iraq or Afghanistan, not all in a combat role.

"We're losing about a half a million veterans a year in this country," said Tom Tarantino, chief policy officer at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans for America. "We are not going to be in a world where a significant plurality of people spent some time in the military, so to have 16 men and women who fought in this current Congress is incredibly significant."

Tarantino said he recognizes that the 16 Iraq and Afghanistan vets have wide-ranging political views. But at the end of the day, he said, their shared experiences make it more likely they'll put political differences aside on issues like high unemployment and suicide rates among returning veterans, or in ensuring that veterans get a quality education through the post-9/11 GI bill.

Their election victories also provide a sense of assurance to veterans.

"The biggest fear we have as veterans is that the America people are going to forget us," Tarantino said. "When you have an 11-year sustained war, the fight doesn't end when you pull out."

Duckworth carries the highest profile of the incoming vets. She was co-piloting a Black Hawk helicopter in Iraq when a rocket-propelled grenade landed in her lap, ripping off one leg and crushing the other. At Walter Reed, she worried about what life as a double amputee had in store. But during her recovery, she found a new mission ? taking care of those she describes as her military brothers and sisters. That mission led her to a job as an assistant secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs during Obama's first term.

"Had I not been in combat, my life would have never taken this path. You take the path that comes in front of you," Duckworth said from a wheelchair last week as she and her fellow freshmen went through orientation at the Capitol. "For me, I try to live every day honoring the men who carried me out of that field because they could have left me behind, and they didn't."

Duckworth is one of two freshmen Democrats who served in Iraq or Afghanistan. The other is Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who served near Baghdad for a year and was a medical operations specialist. Gabbard said she hopes the two of them can be a voice for female veterans and the unique challenges they face.

About 8 percent of veterans are women. They tend to be younger on average. Nearly one in five seen by the Department of Veterans Affairs responds yes when screened for military sexual trauma.

Seven Republicans served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Most had backing from tea party supporters who share their views that the size and scope of the federal government should be curtailed.

?Ron DeSantis of Florida was a judge advocate officer in the Navy who deployed to Iraq as a legal adviser during the 2007 troop surge.

?Brad Wenstrup of Ohio was as a combat surgeon in Iraq.

?Kerry Bentivolio of Michigan served in an administrative capacity with an artillery unit in Iraq and retired after suffering a neck injury. He also served as an infantry rifleman in Vietnam.

?Jim Bridenstine of Oklahoma was a combat pilot in Iraq and Afghanistan.

?Scott Perry of Pennsylvania commanded an aviation battalion in Iraq in 2009 and 2010.

?Doug Collins of Georgia was a chaplain in Iraq.

?Tom Cotton of Arkansas, a Harvard Law School graduate, was an infantry platoon leader in Iraq and then was on a reconstruction team in Afghanistan. In between, he was a platoon leader at Arlington National Cemetery.

Cotton said the reason he ran for Congress is the same one that led him to enter the Army after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"I felt we had been attacked for who we are ? the home of freedom," Cotton said. "And I worry now our liberty is threatened at home by the debt crisis we face, which in the long term will mean less prosperity and less opportunity, and therefore less liberty."

Cotton said he could easily see himself working with Duckworth and Gabbard on veteran's issues. "They've carried a heavy load and we owe them a great debt," he said.

At the same time, it's clear the freshmen veterans have clear differences of opinion over policy matters. For example, Gabbard is a strong critic of the war in Afghanistan. She says the United States needs to get out as quickly and safely as possible. Cotton opposes setting timetables for withdrawal.

"We're trying to win a counter-insurgency war where we can put a friendly, allied, stable government in place," Cotton said. "It's certainly been a long and somewhat winding road, but on the whole, America and our interests in the world are much better off for having waged the war in Afghanistan."

There also will be differences over spending priorities. Cotton is reluctant to trim spending on defense as a way to deal with the deficit.

Duckworth said certain programs need close examination, particularly in the area of government contracts. She said she "can actually stand up and talk about defense spending in a way that will be realistic without being attacked for lack of patriotism or not being strong on defense."

Black Friday Shopping: Put Games that Improve Reading in Your ...

Black Friday Shopping: Put Games that Improve Reading in Your Cart

Black Friday deal shopping? Educational board games make great holiday presents and bring families closer through spending more time together. Purchasing and playing games that can help your child improve their reading skills is one ?deal? you can?t put a price on!

One game that our family continues to play over and over is Scattergories. Basically you are provided with a random list of categories, a letter of the alphabet is chosen by rolling a die, and a timer is started (to provide pressure) while you fill in answers to the categories. Your goal is to fill in an answer for each category on the list that begins with the assigned letter before the timer runs out. The answer you use must be at least a little unique so as not to match with anyone else playing ?otherwise, your answers will cancel each other out.

A few months ago we played Scattergories with the player?s ages ranging from 9 through 70! We got such a wide range of answers that it made for some interesting discussions and a few laughs! For example, for a boy?s name my 6th grader wrote ?Roderick? and his grandmother wrote ?Ricky Ricardo.?

As a reading tutor, my fellow teachers and I liked to give the students a break from the battery of tests they frequently took by having a game day every once in a while. There is real educational value inside those cardboard boxes; not to mention the ability to illustrate social skills- like taking turns, sharing, and good sportsmanship.

My colleague liked to use Story Cubes and Apples to Apples with her students. One of my favorites was Boggle. I was always thrilled to see the students? reaction and interest in playing the games and liked observing how they improved at word building and thinking skills over time. I always tried to encourage them to play them at home with their family. Give those ?remote controls and video game controllers a break.? Their enthusiasm for the board games reminds me, that even though we all love our technology and video games- we still need to make time for those ?old school? games that require social interaction and thinking skills.

Here?s a list of some to put in your shopping cart:
Scrabble
Scrabble Flash
UpWords
Scattergories
Boggle
Bananagrams
Apples to Apples
Rory?s Story Cubes
Taboo
Balderdash

Many of these games have ?junior? versions for the younger set. According to fellow ChicagoNow blogger, Shannon Younger ? it is National Game and Puzzle week. Read her thoughts and suggestions on games from her recent blog post. Good luck with your shopping and don?t forget the board games.

If you want more reading tips for younger children, you can visit my past blog post, Help Your Kindergartner Learn to Read.

Do you have any other games that you can suggest? What games do you and your family like to play? Please tweet, comment, share, or contact me at lisa.schoolzone@gmail.com

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? The jackpot for Powerball's Saturday drawing has climbed to $325 million, the fourth-largest in the game's history.

A single winner's cash payout would be nearly $213 million before taxes.

Powerball organizers say this is the first run-up to a large jackpot that's fallen over a major holiday. They're unsure whether Thanksgiving and Black Friday will help or hinder sales.

Powerball jackpots have increased more rapidly since the game's organizers doubled the ticket price to $2 in January. An Iowa couple won $202 million in a Sept. 26 drawing, and an anonymous winner in Delaware got $50 million prize the next week.

Roxie Breece, assistant manager at a Cenex convenience store in Ogallala, Neb., says far more Powerball tickets than usual have been sold over the past week.

Auto Insurance Tips That Can Work For You! - Empower Network

You need auto insurance to have a car. Not all companies have the same options, they are very different. Learning about the different types of auto insurance and the different discounts available will let you get the coverage you need at a price you can afford.

You should have a basic knowledge of insurance coverage plans when you are shopping for car insurance. Your insurance may only be for a single vehicle, but the cost will still be affected by many different variables. Injury claims, death and legal costs are covered by the bodily injury part of the insurance.

TIP! To lower your premium consider raising your deductible. When it comes to the cost of your insurance, the amount of your deductible makes the biggest difference in how much you pay.

It is important to know about the different types of coverage. You should be certain that you have a policy that covers any possible incident. Liability only covers the damage you do to someone else and their property whereas collision and collateral cover your property as well. It?s also important that you have coverage in the case of an accident involving an uninsured driver, or from damage cause by things like fires.

Reconsider purchasing costly add-ons for your car. Luxury items are great to have, but they are things you can live without. It is possible that in the event of theft or an accident that these additions are not covered by your insurance anyway.

When you are with a professional organization, it is possible to get great discounts. For example, if you are an AARP member or a credit union member, you could qualify for auto insurance discounts.

TIP! If you plan to move in the near future, be sure to check the car insurance rates of the location you are considering. Areas that have high crime or are dangerous for other reasons have higher rates, while less-dangerous areas, such as suburbs and rural areas, usually have lower rates.

In case you ever have to file a claim to your insurance company, know that insurance companies want a lot of detailed documentation. You can use your cell phone to record the time and place of any collision and the damage resulting from it. It pays to always have a camera on hand in your vehicle.

Be sure to keep track of all modifications you have made to your car and any accessories you have installed in it. You?ll need this as proof if your car is stolen or damaged. Be sure that your auto insurance will cover the expensive modifications that you make to your car if you experience theft or damage.

If you need additional coverage, look into optional insurance packages. In the end, the extra expense of some insurance policies may be worth it. If you get in a hit-and-run accident or one where the other party has no insurance, you will be out of luck unless you have uninsured motorist coverage.

TIP! Each time you prepare to renew your insurance policy, you should carefully analyze the terms and conditions. Make your information current.

Bundling your insurance needs can give you big discounts. You should talk to your agent about insuring your home and car together. Although two separate insurance policies can be a better choice, you still want to make sure the deal you?re getting is good, and has plenty of coverage.

Maintain the paperwork showing each of the insurance payments that you make. On the chance that you get pulled over and need to show proof of coverage, you?ll have a record of your premium payment.

One surprising, though somewhat obvious, way to get an insurance discount, especially for males under the age of 25, is to get married. Some have found that marrying saved them almost 40 percent. So if you have that special someone, it may be time to tie the knot and save.

TIP! Do not jump for the first lower rate you discover, though; check with your current insurers before changing companies. Sometimes, your current agent can match any lower offers that you find.

Make sure to stay informed about basic insurance terms prior to searching for a company to get a policy from. The exact details will be somewhat different from place to place, but the main ideas will remain similar regardless of where you are looking. Understanding the verbiage or checking online quotes before speaking with a carrier can help you better review potential policies and make sure you are purchasing appropriate coverage.

Every driver has a different rate that they pay for their auto insurance. While it is true that the type of car you drive and your coverage type influence this, these are not the only factors that influence the cost of a policy. It?s possible for a few select people to get the same or better insurance cheaper. You, too, can get great rates if you learn the ins and outs of auto insurance premiums.

Eating right key to survival of whales and dolphins

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? In the marine world, high-energy prey make for high-energy predators. And to survive, such marine predators need to sustain the right kind of high-energy diet. Not just any prey will do, suggests a new study by researchers from the University of British Columbia and University of La Rochelle, in France.

Published November 21 in the online journal PLOS ONE, the study is the first to show that the survival of whales and dolphins depends on the quality of their diets and this plays an important role in conservation.

"The conventional wisdom is that marine mammals can eat anything," says co-author Andrew Trites, a marine mammal expert at UBC. "However, we found that some species of whales and dolphins require calorie rich diets to survive while others are built to live off low quality prey -- and it has nothing to do with how big they are."

The team compared the diets of 11 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, and found differences in the qualities of prey consumed that could not be explained by the different body sizes of the predators. The key to understanding the differences in their diets was to look at their muscle performance.

"High energy prey tend to be more mobile, and require their predators to spend more energy to catch them," says Trites. "The two have co-evolved."

J?r?me Spitz, the study's first author, says the research will help better assess the impact of resource changes to marine mammals.

"Species with high energy needs are more sensitive to depletion of their primary prey," says Spitz, a post-doctoral fellow at ULR in France, who completed the research while a visiting scholar at UBC. "It is no longer a question of how much food do whales and dolphins need, but whether they are able to get the right kinds of food to survive."

ESPN signs dozenyear deal for Division 1 college football playoff games

Wondering who is more excited than college football fans to see that the top division is finally moving to a playoff system? It's ESPN, which just announced it's signed a 12-year deal for the championship games, semifinals, additional bowl games and "related programming." The deal kicks in after the 2014 regular season, when ESPN's current BCS deal ends. While it's bad news for anyone hoping to get legit access without a cable package, ESPN now has rights to offer the games on TV, in 3D and to mobile devices through its WatchESPN apps (now including the Xbox 360) until 2026. ESPN says its broadcasts of two BCS Championship games have generated the highest cable audiences ever, so it's no surprise they'd want to keep an iron grip on these new games. There's more details in the press release after the break, hit the source link to hear an interview with network VP Brooke Magnus about the negotiations.

iPad mini (Verizon LTE): what's changed?

DNP iPad mini 4G what's changed

Well, what's this, then? Another little tablet from Apple? We surprised ourselves by being quite fond of the first iPad mini, which crossed our desks just a few weeks ago. It strikes the perfect blend of size, performance and capability, but without a proper wireless connection its usability on the road is definitely hampered. Thin and light devices like these were meant to come with you when you leave the house, and you shouldn't leave high-speed data behind.

So, we're very glad to now be testing the $459 LTE version of that very tablet, this one Verizon-flavored. It's every bit as thin and very nearly as light as its WiFi-only predecessor but can send and receive your precious (and also your more disposable) data with way more oomph than before. Is such freedom of connectivity worth the $130 price premium? And, just how bad is the hit to battery life? Let's find out, together.
