"The Help" holds on at top of storm-hit box office (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The hard-working maids of "The Help" hung on to the top of a storm-battered box office over the weekend and beat a trio of new releases with $14.3 million in domestic ticket sales, studio estimates released on Sunday showed.

Hurricane Irene forced the closure of theaters in big markets such as New York and kept moviegoers home along a broad stretch of the East Coast. Domestic ticket sales came in 23 percent lower than the same weekend a year earlier, according to figures from Hollywood.com.

"The Help," a drama about black housekeepers in Civil Rights-era Mississippi, took the top spot in the North American (U.S. and Canadian) market for the second straight weekend. The DreamWorks-produced film adaptation of a best-selling novel by Kathryn Stockett has grossed $96.6 million since it opened three weeks ago, distributor Walt Disney Co said.

The bad weather did not help new releases on a late summer weekend that was expected to be slow even without a major storm.

Action movie "Columbiana" debuted in second place with an estimated $10.3 million, ahead of studio forecasts of around $8 million. The film features actress Zoe Saldana as a woman who witnesses her parents' murder as a child in Bogota and grows up to be an assassin seeking revenge.

"The picture is off to a good start, storm or no storm," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Columbia Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp that released the film.

Horror movie "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce, finished third with domestic sales of $8.7 million.

"Our key large urban East Coast markets were really killed" by the hurricane, said Bob Berney, president of theatrical distribution for FilmDistrict. For example, the movie took in nearly $21,000 at one Manhattan theater on Friday and zero on Saturday, Berney said.

'APES' STILL STRONG

Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst with Hollywood.com, said there was "no question" the hurricane had a "significant negative impact" on ticket sales.

"That said, this was never preordained to be a blockbuster kind of weekend and late August is typically a slowdown period for the summer movie season," he said.

Sci-fi movie "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" finished fourth with $8.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $148.5 million over four weeks. Internationally, the film about rampaging, genetically enhanced chimps has grossed $158.5 million.

Combining domestic and international markets, "Apes" has climbed to a strong $307 million to date. It was distributed by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp.

A new comedy, "Our Idiot Brother," landed in fifth place for the weekend with $6.6 million domestically. The movie stars Paul Rudd as an underachieving but big-hearted sibling who disrupts the lives of his three sisters.

The film likely felt the brunt of Irene's box-office punch as the movie had been expected to perform well in New York, said Erik Lomis, president of distribution for The Weinstein Co, which released the movie. "We got hit hardest in our best area. It's an East Coast comedy," Lomis said.

Baseball started in the 18th century as a simple game of hit the ball and run. Since its inception, it has quickly grown into what is now referred to as the all-American game. Because of this, it gives those that watch and participate in baseball an extra outlook of what the game means.

There are several ways in which baseball is measured by in order to reach specific standards. These begin with the ability of the pitchers to throw the ball correctly, and the batters ability to meet what the pitcher is doing. China bars some Lady Gaga hits from download sites

(AP) ? China's Ministry of Culture has ordered music download sites to delete songs by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, the Backstreet Boys and other pop stars within two weeks or face punishment.

The ministry posted a list of 100 songs ? including Lady Gaga's "Judas" and Perry's "Last Friday Night" ? that had to be purged from the Chinese web because they had never been submitted for mandatory government screening.

Six Lady Gaga songs in all were on the list, all from her latest album. The 12-year-old ballad "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys was also targeted. Dozens of Hong Kong and Taiwanese pop songs and a few Western hits were listed as well.

The ministry said the rule was meant to preserve China's "national cultural security."

Sites were told in the Aug. 19 announcement posted to the ministry's website that they had until Sept. 15 to carry out "self-correction" and delete the songs. It said violators would be punished, but didn't outline the penalties they would face.

It didn't say that the listed songs were objectionable, just that they had not been approved for distribution.

The Chinese government carefully screens the content of imported entertainment content for political messages or commentary that runs contrary to its official line.

Foreign music acts in particular are believed to receive special scrutiny after Icelandic singer Bjork shouted "Tibet!" during a 2008 concert in Shanghai after performing a song titled "Declare Independence."

China claims Tibet has always been part of its territory, but many Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent for centuries and that Beijing's tight control is draining them of their culture and identity.

The price then generally rises until they are either sold out or no 1 is getting and the cost suddenly drops. Most airlines will give a rebate if that takes place.

With hotels you have three alternatives, search on-line for the cheapest cost, book early and ask for the cheapest rate available or wait until the last minute and uncover somewhere attempting to fill empty rooms! The initial is the most dependable, but the room may possibly not be significantly. The second needs long range preparing, and the third demands luck mixed with negotiation. If the locations are all booked you may finish up with either nothing or an expensive room!

For food on a spending budget during travel, feel shops for lunch and snacks and ask around for little, neighborhood locations for dinner. For breakfast, check out the nearby bakery or ask if there is a free of charge fruit bar, a lot of hotels have them.

As for drinks, if you are trying to budget your travel, do not use the in-room bar, go to the nearest shop! Whilst at the shop or store obtain snacks such as chips or nuts, unless they come totally free with the room!

A easy tip is that whenever achievable, pay money rather than credit card or room charge, and ask for a discount. You need to get as room charges add 10-20% to the vendor's fees or a credit card adds five%, plus the men and women frequently have to wait for their funds. Articles 20VN | What Blocks Our Love? | relationships | love | dating

Love is the most natural and wonderful thing on earth. Yet, we so easily block it. We might even be in a relationship with someone and block the love for them. So, easy to limit our love life because something blocks our love, a fear, a memory, a hope, an ambition, destiny, truth or whatever. So, we explore love here, and ask the question of ourselves; what blocks our love?

To begin, lets try to understand the paradigm that causes us to hold love to ransom. Take a flower, a rose for example and smell it, look at it, feel it, hold it, listen to it, and taste it. Delicious. Now take the rose and squash it.

Difficult? Why? Because it's beautiful and we don't want to spoil it. It's a sort of built in mechanism in all of us to try to preserve all that is beautiful in the form we think is best. And this is one of the causes of blocked love in life. We get attached to a form, we hold onto that form, we can't let go of that form, and suddenly we're in the poo. Expectations block love.

So, our love becomes conditional. If you are 6 feet tall, gorgeous, wealthy, happy and blab, you're lovable. If not, nice knowing you.

Love also becomes conditional on behaviour. If you are in a relationship with me, you'll do this and this and this and this. And if you're not in a relationship with me, I won't love you.

Complex as it sounds - the solution to all this is surprisingly easy. Learn to separate love and relationship. We can put boundaries around our relationships and say, "if you do this I will be happier" that's a boundary. But you can't put boundary around your love. You can put boundaries around your business culture, if you do this, I will pay you, and if you don't I won't. But you can't put boundaries around your service to others and your inspiration.

I run seminars and the ones I really enjoy are the ones in which people get a tactile experience. Like out in nature, or in a conference room with bits of nature as teachers. In Canada, I was really blessed with some great sponsors and they'd buy flowers for the programs because it was such a shock for people to see how attached they were to the form.

Is a flower, that is all squashed into bits still a flower? It's not a flower in the form we knew it. It's a flower in a new form, called squashed to bits. But is it still a flower? The answer is a resounding yes. So, people come in all shapes and sizes and religions and cultures. Christians say "if you don't worship Jesus, you're not holy" - just like the flower, they are so stuck in form, they can love anything other than the rose in it's "perfect" shape.

In your relationship, partners shift shape allot. You have to learn how to shift your expectations. And if they cross your boundaries you might choose to break the relationship, but not the love. You might say "no matter what, richer or poorer, better or worse, sickness and health, I love you, BUT, if you break my heart, I will not be in a relationship with you"

This is a personal spirituality that makes the world a better place. Instead of broken hearted people looking for compensation in their next relationship, we get loving people, admitting how much they love their ex, and moving into the next relationship without blame and guilt and fear. We also get a more honest dynamic between people.

So many marriages are broken boundary marriages. The boundaries get broken, people compromise for the sake of not breaking up, and live a lifetime staring at the rose, but not feeling it, smelling it, touching it. Just wishing it would be different. Instead of love for that person, they just hope.

When you learn to separate relationship and love, you learn honesty. You can love many, but relationship with few. So, the last part of this short piece is about boundary - expectations. When someone crosses your boundaries you feel justified in being hurt, angry, disappointed, and emotionally defensive.

Boundaries are very complex things. They are our expectations of people. Constructed from our fears, wounds, education, information, social paradigms, guilt's, and a nightmare of other things. Our expectations are our EGO. They can block our love by creating conditions for it. If you do this, I will love you. If you do that I will love you. I guess to a certain extent boundaries reveal our emotional truth.

If I have no boundaries, I have no SELF respect. You can walk all over me, treat me like a piece of dirt. If I have so many boundaries, then you can't get close to me, because you have to fit through such a small keyhole to be accepted by me. No boundaries is a spiritual nirvana, where the ego has no affect on a person's judgements. It's a theoretical place, few human beings are ready to surrender to. It's a place where money, wealth, family, friends, TV sets don't exist. A person with no boundaries ends up with no money, relationship or home. And for them, who cares. They've got love.

People with lots of boundaries end up with lots of things. They end up with wealth, cars, relationships, homes, TV sets, jewels, business. And for them, this is nirvana. They got a life with everything they want. Except love and they get that through affairs, God worship and flirtation. So, you see there's no perfect path and half way between the two is called the masses. Conventional living is the balance between all boundary, and all love.

So the conventional paradigm is finding the middle ground. Not quite the perfect love life, not quite the extreme material life. And so, with this you can see why the majority of people chase happiness, and never allow themselves to find it. Always compromised. Not strong enough to go for success at the cost of love, not strong enough to go for love at the cost of success. Stuck.

The key to all this is the ability to separate love from relationship. Or spirituality from materiality. That is the first key, and the second one is to know which is a priority.

You are sitting at the office, people aren't working correctly, you love them, your heart feels good about them, but you need to get your business profit up, what are you going to do? What's your priority?

You know someone, you love them deeply. You want a relationship but they don't fit your expectations. What are you going to do, choose love or your boundaries for relationships? One is deep the other makes you happy day to day. You want the world to be a better place, you see polluters, armies, religions invading people's boundaries. You want to change it, yet, you know that love is also important to you. What are you going to do, how can you change the situation while holding the idea that everybody deserves love? Love and boundaries can coexist when an individual decides their priorities.

Live with Spirit

Dental Implants Philadelphia And The Factors ... - Health & Fitness

Dental implants Philadelphia is an artificial replacement, which can be utilized in cases of tooth loss. The implant procedure falls under both prosthetic dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. There are several choices to consider when treating missing teeth. Dental implants Philadelphia is proven effective and more functional. There are cases where dental implants are the only solution in restoring proper functions of the teeth with the supporting structures. Dental implants Philadelphia is also use to support other dental prostheses like crown, bridge and permanent denture.

There are various causes for tooth loss such as the following: 1) Root canal failure. 2) Cavities. 3) Trauma in to the mouth. 4) Periodontitis (gum disease). 5) Hereditary defects. 6) Too much wear and tear. Patients who suffer from loss of tooth may experience self-consciousness to the point where they stay away from talking or smiling. Tooth loss can result in biting problems by badly affecting eating habits, which can cause malnutrition. Dental implants Philadelphia can?t only help raise self-confidence but also help avoid and remedy more serious health issues due to loss of tooth.

A dental implant can even be used to stabilize dentures in order to reduce gum irritation and provide better stability. In the past years, advancements in implant dentistry have allowed for the development of more narrow mini implants, which has opened the candidacy for many more patients considering dental implants. In some cases, calling for more complicated treatment a prosthodontist specializing in such treatment will be called in to complete the procedure. In surgical cases, a periodontist and/or oral surgeon performs the implant surgery. You may consult your dentist to see if you qualify for dental implant treatment.

The success of dental implants Philadelphia could be attributed structurally and functionally towards the connection of the dental implant to living bone. The implants are usually placed in a single setting requiring osseointegration and are virtually indistinguishable from other teeth. Osseointegration is directly securing a dental implant root to the bone of the jaw. This first part of the implanting process will take three to six months to incorporate and recover. When the implant is secure in the jawbone a synthetic prosthesis (crown, bridge etc.) will be attached to complete the procedure. Osseointegration is an important process in making sure the success of a dental implant, without it the implant would fail.

New dental implants Philadelphia procedures as with the recent strategy used by dentists is early intervention, which means that implants are inserted into locations in which teeth have freshly been removed. When successful, the process can take months of treatment because the osseointegration process is sped up. However, the candidacy for such treatment depends upon the anatomical factors in the extraction site. If the tooth site ends up being broader versus the implant, the implant can?t be placed right after the extraction. In cases like this dental work must first be done in order to ensure a perfect fit for the implant. For small teeth and incisors with narrow spaces, the placement of mini implants is often used.

One of the main worries when looking for a dentist is how nice and professional the dental professional is, particularly when you need to have dental implants Philadelphia. Searching for the best dentist Philadelphia could make a big difference in receiving good dental care.

(AP) ? Ben Roethlisberger running around, extending plays, throwing touchdowns. Hines Ward dancing in the end zone, not on the ballroom floor. Troy Polamalu picking off a pass. James Harrison wreaking havoc in the backfield.

Does the calendar say August or December? For a couple of dazzling quarters on Thursday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers made it hard to tell the difference.

Roethlisberger threw for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Pittsburgh's defense put an exclamation point to Philadelphia star Michael Vick's miserable day, intercepting three of his passes in the first half of a remarkably easy 24-14 victory.

Yes, it's only the preseason. But after sleepwalking through a loss to Washington a week ago, the defending AFC champions delivered a reminder to their cross-state rivals about which team from Pennsylvania has played in three of the last six Super Bowls.

"That's the desired response we were looking for," said Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin.

Particularly from a defense energized by the return of All Pros Troy Polamalu and James Harrison. The veterans sat last week to rest up and watched as the lowly Redskins moved the ball with ease.

Philadelphia found the going significantly more difficult.

Harrison teamed with Donovan Warren for a sack while Polamalu played with his usual reckless abandon, including a 36-yard free wheeling return of an interception that ended with Vick drilling the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year in the knees.

Polamalu brushed off Vick's hit, saying he's hit opponents the same way plenty of times.

"I was just playing ball just like he was playing ball," Polamalu said.

Even if Vick hardly played like his usual self on a night in which he finished with more tackles than touchdowns. He completed just 5 of 12 passes for 47 yards and showed little of the sharpness that's drawn praise from coach Andy Reid during training camp.

It was a frustrating end to a frustrating day for the 2010 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He spent the morning clarifying comments he made in a "GQ" article in which he suggested NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell convinced him to sign with the Eagles as a backup two years ago rather than compete for a starting job elsewhere.

Vick stressed it was his decision to sign with Philadelphia and refused to blame the mini-furor surrounding the story for his lackluster performance.

"Once I was in the game, the issue was just pressing to put points on the board," Vick said. "I just got caught up in getting down 14-0."

Then again, Vick got little help on either side of the ball.

Philadelphia wide receiver DeSean Jackson, playing for the first time this preseason after ending his contract holdout, had two catches for eight yards as the Eagles struggled to gain any momentum.

"We're all in this together and we all stunk tonight," Reid said.

Particularly in the first half as Pittsburgh's starters ? and more than a few reserves ? outplayed Philadelphia's first-stringers.

Pittsburgh outgained Philadelphia 262-71 in the opening 30 minutes, taking some of the sizzle out of one of the league's most hyped teams.

"We just have to go back to the drawing board," said Philadelphia defensive lineman Trent Cole. "That's why they call it the preseason. We're going to get back together. We still have a great team, I don't care what anybody says."

Philadelphia made such a splash during the free agency period ? signing Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, defensive linemen Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins and quarterback Vince Young among others ? that Young dubbed his new squad "The Dream Team."

The Steelers did little to downplay the hype surrounding the Eagles, with safety Ryan Clark saying he's only too happy to let Philadelphia "deal with the limelight."

The Eagles looked uncomfortable under the glare while playing in front of a national TV audience against a team still smarting from a loss to Green Bay in the Super Bowl.

Pittsburgh had no such issues. Roethlisberger led two long touchdown drives, hitting Antonio Brown on a 29-yard score in the first quarter and finding Ward in the back of the end zone in the second.

"We found ways to make plays and guys found ways to get open," Roethlisberger said. "I found a way to get them the ball."

And keep Philadelphia's defense on the field.

Pittsburgh converted 7 of 10 third downs in the opening half and punted only once as Roethlisberger easily made plays against Philadelphia's revamped secondary.

The addition of Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was supposed to shore up the Eagles' suspect pass defense, yet the secondary consistently ran into trouble.

Brown torched Asante Samuel on a double-move on the first touchdown, and Ward ended a 96-yard drive with a 20-yard scoring grab after Roethlisberger extended the play by breaking containment.

Ward, who won "Dancing With the Stars" during the offseason, celebrated with a couple of well-executed Samba.

"All the guys have been ragging on me all season about doing something," Ward said.

While Ward, Roethlisberger and running back Rashard Mendenhall were in baseball caps by the second quarter, Vick played the entire half.

The Steelers responded by keeping most of the starting defense on the field. Vick could do little with his arm or his legs even though Pittsburgh was forced to use a patchwork secondary thanks to injuries to corners Ike Taylor (broken left thumb) and Bryant McFadden (hamstring).

Usual nickelback William Gay and reserve Keenan Lewis started in place of the two veterans and held Jackson and others in check. Gay blanketed the speedy wideout when Vick tried to hit Jackson with a deep ball on Philadelphia's first play from scrimmage, and Lewis easily picked off Vick when the quarterback overthrew Riley Cooper down the sideline.

The Steelers weren't done. Polamalu, slowed in the playoffs last year with an Achilles' injury, appeared to be fine playing at full speed for the first time in more than six months.

Even if he knows he may have gotten carried away during his interception return. He weaved his way into Philadelphia territory and at one point faked a pitch during the return. He held onto the ball and paid the price when Vick nailed him.

Tomlin glared at his star safety when Polamalu jogged off the field. If he finds himself with the ball in his hands again before the games start for real, don't expect him to hang onto it.

"I was running out of gas," he said.

Cops: Slain girl, 3, found near floodway ditch

Remains believed to be a 3-year-old Missouri girl who went missing more than a week ago were found Tuesday near a series of ditches where authorities say a neighbor is suspected of dumping her body after suffocating her with a plastic bag.

A joint statement sent Tuesday night from prosecutors and law enforcement officers in the area said a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer searching by boat found the body of Breeann Rodriguez near the Floodway Ditches, about eight miles southeast of the girl's family's home in Senath.

"We appreciate all the help and support from the community in what has been a difficult time for all," Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder said in the statement. "We are saddened to confirm our fears but glad we have been able to recover her for her parents."

The girl's parents were notified shortly after she was found at 6:30 p.m., according to authorities.

Pink bike
More than four dozen investigators searched a floodway near the Mississippi River earlier Tuesday. Breeann was last seen Aug. 6 riding her pink bike with training wheels in front of her home.

Her parents insisted she would not have ridden farther than the end of the street ? and they were right.

On Saturday, authorities announced they had arrested a neighbor, Shawn Morgan. Morgan, 43, told agent Tim Trowbridge of the Bootheel Drug Task Force that he found the child on a ladder in his backyard pool, grabbed her and carried her inside his home, where he suffocated her with a white plastic trash bag, according to a probable cause statement the agent filed .

Morgan told Trowbridge it "felt like it took an hour for the girl to die," according to the statement. He did not say why he killed the child.

He has been charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and tampering with evidence. He made a first court appearance Tuesday, and his arraignment was rescheduled for Aug. 30 to allow him time to find an attorney. He remains jailed without bond.

'Horrible' impact on town
Stephen Sokoloff, Dunklin County prosecutor, told Reuters that the killing had shaken Senath, a community of about 1,750 people.

"It's horrendous," Sokoloff said. "The impact on the town has been horrible. It's a small town."

A search of online court records did not show any previous charges against Morgan.

Morgan told Trowbridge he put the child's body in the same trash bag he used to kill her and drove to the floodway ? a low-lying undeveloped area along a state road ? and threw the bag over a railing into a ditch. He said he then went home and dismantled the girl's bike, which he dumped in the same area of the river system.

The bike and training wheels have been found.

Malignant stem cells may explain why some breast cancers develop and recur

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2011) ? Mutations that are found in stem cells could be causing some breast cancers to develop and may be the reason the disease recurs. These abnormal cells are likely controlling cell functions in the tumor and, given they are not targeted by chemotherapy and radiation, they enable the disease to recur.

The mutations were discovered in a study conducted by scientists and physicians at the Oregon Health & Science University Knight Cancer Institute. The study, which examined breast cancer cells removed during surgery, was recently published online in the Annals of Surgical Oncology.

"By studying normal and malignant cells that were collected from breast tissues removed during surgery, we were able to look at what is occurring in the body," said SuEllen J. Pommier, Ph.D., the lead author of the study and associate research professor in the division of surgical oncology at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.

Working with samples taken directly from surgeries made the findings in this study possible, Pommier said, because the biology of breast stem cells could be compared with their malignant counterparts in a way that hadn't been done before. The cultured cell lines used in most studies can't provide accurate information about normal breast stem cells.

The study, which was funded primarily by the Avon Foundation for Women, may prove that some current therapies that target mutations in the tumor won't be effective in stamping out the disease for some patients. It also suggests that more research should be done in two areas:

  • Determining the role of PIK3CA/AKT1 signaling mutations, which were found in 73 percent of the tumors in this study of fresh surgical specimens - an occurrence rate that is much higher than previously detected in stored samples.
  • And, exploring the importance of the loss of CD24 expression, which previously was considered a requirement for breast cancer stem cells, but may not be a characteristic of all breast cancer stem cells.

Understanding the biology of individual tumors is the primary mission of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. "This study provided us with new insights into breast cancer stem cells and possibly into the earliest mutations. That information is crucial for developing treatments," Pommier added.

In addition to support from the Avon Foundation for Women, this study was funded by a Vertex Pharmaceutical/Oregon Health & Science Collaborative Research Grant.

Gaddafi defiant as government said to be talking with rebels (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi urged his people early on Monday to "liberate Libya" from NATO and traitors, a day after rebels captured a key town on the road west to Tunisia, severing Tripoli's main supply route.

Late on Sunday, representatives of Gaddafi's government were holding talks with rebels at a hotel on the southern Tunisian island of Djerba, a source with direct knowledge of the talks said -- though the government spokesman denied it.

The talks followed a dramatic advance by the rebels that won them control of the town of Zawiyah, 50 km (30 miles) west of Tripoli on the coast, enabling them to halt food and fuel supplies from Tunisia to Gaddafi's stronghold in the capital.

Tripoli was not under immediate threat from a rebel attack, but rebel forces are now in their strongest position since the uprising against 41 years of Gaddafi's rule began in February, controlling the coast both east and west of Tripoli.

Gaddafi's speech on Monday, delivered over a poor quality telephone line and broadcast by state television in audio only, was his first public address since rebel fighters launched their latest offensive, the biggest in months.

"The Libyan people will remain and the Fateh revolution (which brought Gaddafi to power in 1969) will remain. Move forward, challenge, pick up your weapons, go to the fight for liberating Libya inch by inch from the traitors and from NATO," the Libyan leader said.

"Get ready for the fight ... The blood of martyrs is fuel for the battlefield," he said, in what state television said was a live speech.

At the talks in Djerba late on Sunday, "Representatives of the rebels and Gaddafi representatives are having a meeting now," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He did not identify the negotiators.

In Tripoli, government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim blamed Western leaders and the media for the spread of rumours that Gaddafi's government was engaged in talks on the leader's departure from Libya.

"This information is absolutely incorrect and it is part of a media war against us. Their target is to confuse us, break our spirit, and shake our morale," he said.

"The leader is here in Libya, fighting for the freedom of our nation. He will not leave Libya," Ibrahim said.

Gaddafi's characteristically defiant speech followed a day of action across a swathe of northwest Libya during which rebels said they had seized the town of Surman, next door to Zawiyah, there was fighting in the town of Garyan that controls the southern access to Tripoli, and shooting could be heard near the main Libyan-Tunisian border crossing.

Government spokesman Ibrahim said Zawiyah and Garyan were "under our full control" but that there were small pockets of fighting in two other locations in the area around Tripoli.

The coastal highway between Tripoli and Tunisia had not been blocked by the fighting, Ibrahim said in a telephone interview on Sunday, but foreigners were not being allowed to use the route "to save them from any bullets here or there."

REBEL FLAG

Rebels from the Western Mountains region to the south advanced into Zawiyah late on Saturday, and early on Sunday, about 50 rebel fighters were milling around near the central market, triumphantly shouting "Allahu Akbar!" ("God is greatest").

The red, black and green rebel flag was flying from a shop. At the point where it passes through Zawiyah, the main highway linking Tripoli to Tunisia was empty of traffic.

Rebel fighters told Reuters there were still forces loyal to Gaddafi in the town, including snipers on tall buildings. Bursts of artillery and machinegun fire could be heard.

One rebel fighter said Gaddafi's forces controlled the oil refinery on the northern edge of Zawiyah -- a strategic target because it is the only one still functioning in western Libya and Gaddafi's forces depend on it for fuel.

The fighting was spreading west from Zawiyah along the coastal highway toward the main Ras Jdir border crossing with Tunisia. A rebel spokesman called Abdulrahman said a rebel force had seized Surman, the next town west along the coast from Zawiyah.

But at the border crossing to Tunisia, Libyan customs and immigration officers were operating as usual, despite reports of clashes between rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces in the area late on Saturday.

On another front in Sunday's fighting, near Garyan, heavy gunfire could be heard from the town, a Reuters reporter in the area said. A rebel fighter told Reuters "We control 70 percent of Garyan. There is still fighting taking place at the moment."

Rebels, backed by NATO warplanes, have been trying since February to end Gaddafi's rule in the bloodiest of the "Arab Spring" uprisings convulsing the Middle East.

After a period of deadlock, the rebels' advance to the Mediterranean coast near Tripoli represents a major shift in the balance of forces.

Gaddafi says the rebels are armed criminals and al Qaeda militants, and has described the NATO campaign as an act of colonial aggression aimed at stealing Libya's oil.
