MIT engineers create experimental processor with 110 cores

MIT 110 Core Processor

The engineering minds at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology scoff at the eight-core processors being used in the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles. PCWorld reports that MIT scientists have designed an experimental processor that has a whopping 110 cores and that purportedly makes computing vastly faster and more power efficient. The engineers designed the chip?s 110 cores to essentially replace its entire cache with a ?shared memory pool? that reduces the amount of traffic inside the chips. The new processor is still in its experimental stages, however, and MIT postgraduate student?Mieszko Lis tells PCWorld that ?it?s not the kind of thing you buy for Christmas.?

Out of the shadows: Picking up hints of dark matter

PICK a word to describe dark matter. Mysterious? Elusive? Invisible? One you're not likely to use is "found". But after 80 years of hunting for it, that may be about to change. Several experiments deep underground have recently seen signs of something that might ? just might ? be dark matter. In space, too, detectors are tracking radiation that could signal the very same dark particles colliding and annihilating in our galaxy. Is it just coincidence, or could these faint fingerprints really all be from the same dark hand?

Explore our interactive map: "Around the world with dark matter"

Dan Hooper, a theoretical astrophysicist at the University of Chicago, believes that we may already have glimpsed dark matter. "I happen to be in the relatively rare minority of my colleagues who think we probably have," he says. "I'm not certain ? I just think it's likely." If ...

Fast Food Strikers Should Blame Obama And Get Real Jobs, Says Conservative Twitter Echo Chamber

It?s being called the largest fast-food strike in history, a rallying cry for thousands of underpaid labors eager to call attention to income disparity and a long-stagnant minimum wage. But if a handful of social media loudmouths are to be believed, it?s just more hot air from the greedy, lazy pro-Obama camp.

Amid staged walkouts by U.S. service workers in some 50 cities Thursday, conservative commentators took time criticize the workers? movement and marginalize the strikers for daring to demand a fair wage.

?Only in Obama?s America would so many people demand to be paid so much more than they?re worth,? tweeted Neal Boortz, the Libertarian radio host.

It was a sentiment echoed by Boortz?s more well-known counterpart, Rush Limbaugh, who spent a good part of his radio show Thursday wondering why the protesters aren?t blaming President Obama for their workplace woes.

?None of them blame Obama,? he ranted. ?They?re just angry. I don't know who they?re angry at, but they?re down on America.?

Obama, incidentally, has pushed for raising the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour from its current $7.25. The wage has been increased only eight times in the last 30 years, and it is far outpaced by the price of inflation. A full-time worker making minimum wage earns just $15,000 a year. Indeed, according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research, even a hike to $9 an hour would keep minimum-wage workers below the poverty threshold, which is expected to hit $24,635 by 2015.

Nevertheless, the idea that fast-food workers are greedy mooches -- or that they should ?just get better jobs? -- persists among a subset of the conservative echo chamber.

It was a similar story on Facebook, where event pages for protests in various cities attracted criticism and derision from fellow Facebook users telling the strikers to ?go to school or trade school and then get a real job.?

FBPost Event pages organizing fast food strikes attracted criticism from Facebook users. ?Facebook

Strikers fought back, though. Under hashtags such as #RaiseTheWage and #829Strike, Twitter users have been posting pictures of protests at walkouts across the country, including employees of McDonald?s Corp. (NYSE:MCD), Wendy?s Co. (NASDAQ:WEN) and Kentucky Fried Chicken, a subsidiary of Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE:YUM).

The companies themselves have largely been silent on the strike, but it should go without saying they?re not lovin? it.

Israel calls up reservists, deploys missile defences against Syria

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM ? Israel ordered a small-scale mobilisation of reservists on Wednesday and strengthened its missile defences as precautions against possible Syrian attack should Western powers carry out threatened strikes on Syria.

But an Israeli official briefed on a meeting of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s security Cabinet said the Israel believed the probability of it be targeted by Syria, its northern neighbour and long-time foe, was low.

?Following a security assessment held today, there is no reason for a change to normal routines,? Netanyahu said in a statement. ?We are, in parallel, preparing for any scenario.?

That included a limited call-up of military reserve soldiers and deployment of an advanced missile shield in the north, the official said. Israel Radio said mobilisation of several hundred troops in intelligence and air defence had been authorised. Army Radio reported the military was using all of its missile defences, which include the short-range Iron Dome, the mid-range Patriot and the long-range Arrow II.

Facing potentially imminent attack by the United States and other Western powers over its alleged use of chemical weapons, Damascus has hinted it could shoot back at Israel. It is also braced for possible rocket salvoes from Hizbollah, Syria?s Lebanese militia ally.

Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Israel sought to stay out of the Syrian crisis but would respond forcefully to any attempt to attack it.

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said after the security Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that Israel was ?taking steps for just in case?.

In a speech in Tel Aviv, Yaalon said Israel?s ?finger is not light on the trigger but whoever around us presumes they can challenge us by a threat will of course encounter our might if there is any attempt to hurt us or our citizens?.

Assad, preoccupied with a two-and-a half-year-old uprising against his rule and facing a militarily superior enemy in Israel, has held his fire in the face of three Israeli air strikes in Syria this year on advanced weaponry.

But many in Israel worry that he could lash out if he felt his back was against the wall, and long lines formed on Wednesday at gas mask distribution centres.

Israel has provided its citizens with equipment to cope with possible chemical or biological attacks since the 1991 Gulf War, when US-led troops drove Iraq out of Kuwait.

According to official figures, however, only about 60 per cent of Israelis collected their gas masks before the current tensions over Syria erupted. The Israeli Postal Service, which oversees mask distribution, said the number of orders phoned in by the public in recent days had quadrupled.

?We just want to be prepared. I?d say it?s a bit of a surreal experience,? a Jerusalem resident, who gave his name only as Tovy, said at a distribution centre. ?I just really pray we?re never going to really need to use it.?

Reds 2B Brandon Phillips lashes out at reporter

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips shouted obscenities Wednesday night at a newspaper reporter who commented on the star's sagging on-base percentage.

Phillips directed a short tirade at C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer before the game at St. Louis.

Phillips let loose at Rosecrans in the clubhouse, then interrupted manager Dusty Baker's pregame media session to make a few more comments.

The Gold Glove winner stuck his head into the doorway of Baker's office and singled out Rosecrans, saying, "I've found out your Twitter name now, dude."

Phillips sarcastically encouraged Baker to "Make them happy, Dusty" and threw in some expletives for the reporter who's "worried about my on-base percentage."

"That ain't my deal," Baker said, adding the dispute was between Phillips and Rosecrans.

The episode didn't escalate.

Asked about the incident, Rosecrans said: "It's not the first time it's happened in the clubhouse and it's not the last. Brandon had his say and I don't care. It won't change how I cover the team, or Brandon."

Phillips has a .310 on-base percentage for the slumping playoff contenders. He has 95 RBIs and has batted fourth for most of the season, hitting .355 with runners in scoring position.

After the third-place Reds lost 6-1 Tuesday night and fell 4? games behind the NL Central-leading Cardinals, Phillips tweeted that "it was time to talk to POPS about changing my role! NEED NEW RESULTS ASAP! #ALREADY."

Baker said he didn't mind the tweeting, and Phillips was moved to the second spot for the first time since opening day.

Rosecrans later tweeted that Phillips should perhaps hit somewhere else in the order other than second.

Phillips got off to a fast start in his new slot. He singled and scored in a six-run first inning and singled and scored in a three-run second as the Reds took a 9-0 lead.

Twitter update streamlines conversations, displays them in chronological order video

Twitter has always been a great place to discuss hard-hitting news (like Miley Cyrus' puzzling evolution), but following conversations can feel a bit like a mining expedition. The company has taken note, and a new update to the website, iOS and Android apps -- available today -- makes engaging in conversations on Twitter a much more intuitive process. Now, the first tweet in a chain will show up on your timeline above the replies, allowing you to read the conversation in chronological order. Up to two subsequent related tweets will be connected to the first by a vertical blue line; for lengthy conversations, you can continue reading with a simple tap. To learn more, check out Twitter's video after the break.

Remember Gareth Bale for the good times, says Spurs coach

Bale (above) is expected to complete his world-record move to Real Madrid once Spurs announce the signings of Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen.

Bale had hoped to part ways with the club on good terms, but he has angered manager Andre Villas-Boas by skipping training for two successive days and is now expected to be fined ?160,000.

That news has not gone down well with Bale's camp, who are annoyed by Villas-Boas' public criticism of a man who scored 26 goals for Spurs last year.

With so much bad blood between the two camps, the memories of Bale scoring last-minute wonder goals have faded, but Tottenham coach Ferdinand hopes the supporters will not hold his recent conduct against him.

"I certainly hope that won't be the case," Ferdinand said at the launch of the Vodafone 4G in Trafalgar Square.

"The whole thing has gone on for a while now. The manager just wants to see the end of it and he just wants to get organising his squad for an important campaign.

"What Gareth has done for the club over the last few years has been fantastic.

"No-one wanted to see it end this way, but sometimes when a saga goes on for this long unfortunately it doesn't end as smoothly or as nicely as everyone wants it to but I just hope that everyone remembers the good things that Gareth has done and they wish him all the best for the future."

Ferdinand, who coaches Tottenham's youth squads, witnessed Bale's final appearance at the club's training ground in Enfield last Friday when he bade farewell to his team-mates.

With a world-record price tag on his shirt, the Welshman will be under extreme pressure when he finally turns out for Real, but Ferdinand is sure the Welshman will succeed in Spain.

"A lot of people talk about British players struggling abroad, but Gareth is level-headed and if anyone can adapt to playing abroad then it will be him," the former Spurs striker said.

While Bale gets ready to board a plane for Madrid, Tottenham were planning for their Europa League game against Dinamo Tbilisi and the huge north London derby at Arsenal on Sunday.

Spurs have won all three of their games without Bale this season and have yet to concede a goal.

5 Ways to Help Guarantee Success | World of Psychology

5 Ways to Help Guarantee SuccessQuestion: Once upon a time, there were three frogs on a log. One day one of them made a decision to jump into the pool below. How many frogs were left on the log?

Answer: There are still three frogs on a log! One had only made a decision to jump in, but took no action!

I?ve written about taking action before when it comes to making change in our lives, but I think this subject warrants a little more attention.?

Action is really at the heart of active change. Without action we?re only thinking about change. As much as thinking is a necessary step, it won?t lead us to the goals that we are aiming for.

The parable above might seem familiar to many people. We may want change, crave change and desperately wish for change, but active change always comes back to personal responsibility and actually doing it. There is no getting away from that.

Reaching your goal, whatever that goal may be, can be an exciting moment. Yet before getting to the top of your personal mountain there are some useful steps I encourage you to take. These steps, I believe, will help you build a solid foundation on which to be more successful.

Like any new endeavor, the first steps you take can set the tone for the rest of the journey ahead. Therefore, it?s fundamentally important that you take time to consider an effective plan of action.?As I?ve previously written about the steps toward change, I thought it might be useful to offer you my five practical keys that can aid you in your action process.

  1. Knowledge.

The more the better. Read about the area or subject in which you are interested. Some people may prefer to be spontaneous, but success for most comes from having an informed idea of the challenges ahead. Understanding the principles of the area or subject you are interested in will help solidify your foundation for success.

  2. Planning.

Take time to plan out what steps you might take toward reaching your goal. It doesn?t matter if the steps change along the way, because flexibility in thought and deed is another key to success. I?m guessing most of us don?t have a crystal ball that can predict every outcome. Having a plan will mean you are already taking big steps toward being consistent.

  3. Consistency.

This cannot be overstated. Consistency, consistency, consistency. Now, consistency doesn?t mean rigidity in thought and deed. It means maintaining a level of performance that doesn?t vary greatly in quality over time. If you can do this, even if it?s a little every day, you will be sure to stay focused and on track.

  4. Flexibility.

It would be great if sticking to a plan was smooth sailing, but the reality is, things change. Our environment is always in flux and these changes?will often challenge your ability to stay consistent. When you are faced with challenges you hadn?t planned for, or when moving forward becomes difficult, don?t get fixated on ?having? to stick to the plan. Learn to make the best choices within the situation you find yourself. Some will work out, others not so much, but your flexibility will pay off in the long run. If you need to take time to reevaluate your plan ? or even your goal ? then do so. The old sayings, ?Rome wasn?t built in a day? and ?only fools rush in? are worth contemplating when faced with a fork in the road.

  5. Enjoy it.

Success isn?t just about winning or reaching your ultimate goal, even though that may be important to you.?Success also comes from taking steps to try to enrich ourselves and others. It?s about learning to recognize the small successes we make along the way toward our goal; about finding courage and strength to move forward in the face of resistance; about knowing that each step is a success of its own. Enjoy these moments: How we get to the top of the mountain is part of our legacy, not just the fact that we made it.

UK orders Ryanair to cut Aer Lingus stake

By Conor Humphries

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Britain's competition watchdog ordered Ryanair to sell most of its stake in Irish rival Aer Lingus, a potentially fatal blow to Chief Executive Michael O'Leary's dream of buying the former flag carrier.

O'Leary immediately vowed to appeal against the "bizarre and manifestly wrong" order to cut Ryanair's stake to 5 percent from 30 percent, opening the prospect of a legal process that analysts say could last years.

Echoing a ruling by the European Commission in February to block Ryanair's third bid to take over Aer Lingus, Britain's Competition Commission said Ryanair's stake could lead to "a substantial lessening of competition" on some routes.

In addition to cutting the stake, the UK body ordered Ryanair not to seek additional shares or board representation.

The British watchdog claims jurisdiction over the Irish airlines due to 11 routes between Ireland and Britain where Ryanair flights compete with those of Aer Lingus or partner Aer Arann.

Ryanair said the Competition Commission could not lawfully impose any remedies on Ryanair until the completion of Ryanair's appeal against the European Commission ruling.

O'Leary built up a 30 percent stake in Aer Lingus between 2007 and 2009 as a platform to take over the 75-year-old airline, a purchase that would have capped the rise of his upstart airline that began with one 15-seater plane in 1985.

Ryanair, whose low-cost model has since come to dominate European aviation, carried almost 80 million passengers last year compared with under 10 million at Aer Lingus, and O'Leary says a takeover would allow him to slash his rival's cost base.

HEATHROW SLOTS

But the Competition Commission found the current ownership structure could limit Aer Lingus's ability to manage effectively its portfolio of Heathrow slots and could impede Aer Lingus from combining with another airline.

While the two airlines currently impose a "strong competitive constraint" on each other, the report found that Ryanair would have the incentive to use its influence to weaken Aer Lingus's effectiveness as a competitor.

O'Leary said in a statement the ruling violated European law due to contradictions with recent findings of the European Commission and that it failed to acknowledge Ryanair's recent offer to unconditionally sell its minority stake to any other airline that secures Aer Lingus shareholder approval for a takeover bid.

He accused the body of double standards for not blocking the purchase by British Airways owner of British regional airline bmi, which was completed last year.

Ryanair said its lawyers would lodge a complaint to Britain's competition appeal tribunal in the coming weeks.

The appeals mean Aer Lingus management is unlikely to quickly fulfil its ambition of getting Ryanair off the company's share register and replace it with institutional investors or a strategic partner.

Having already written down the 407 million euros it paid for the Aer Lingus stake to 80 million, Ryanair could book a profit at the current share price, which would value the stake at around 270 million euros.

But it says no one has expressed an interest in buying it.

Aer Lingus's share price was down 3.8 percent at 0837 GMT and Ryanair was down 0.3 percent, compared with a fall of 0.6 percent on the broader Irish market.

Fox Previews New Debt Ceiling Fight With Fundamental Misunderstanding Of Debt

Fox News discussed the need to raise the debt ceiling by erroneously linking government debt to family debt, a comparison that demonstrates the network's fundamental misunderstanding of the subject.

In an August 26 letter to Congressional leaders, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew indicated that the debt limit would be reached in mid-October. If Congress cannot arrive at an agreement to raise the limit, the United States will be unable to pay for previously agreed upon obligations, such as Social Security and Medicare payments.

On the August 27 edition of America's Newsroom, co-host Martha MacCallum hosted Fox News' Bob Beckel and former George W. Bush staffer Brad Blakeman to discuss the Obama administration's unwillingness to negotiate over raising the limit. During the segment, MacCallum likened government debt to household debt, claiming that if "your daughter runs up the credit card and has access to it and just goes crazy on it ... you're going to say, 'we're going to pay the bill, but we're going to change things in the future.' What is so very difficult about that?"

But MacCallum's analogy of a daughter running up a credit card bill is completely inaccurate.

Nobel prize-winning economist Paul Krugman directly addressed the conservative notion that household debt and government debt are fundamentally the same, claiming that it ignores a few key realities about the nature of government debt. From his 2012 New York Times column:

First, families have to pay back their debt. Governments don't -- all they need to do is ensure that debt grows more slowly than their tax base. The debt from World War II was never repaid; it just became increasingly irrelevant as the U.S. economy grew, and with it the income subject to taxation.

Second -- and this is the point almost nobody seems to get -- an over-borrowed family owes money to someone else; U.S. debt is, to a large extent, money we owe to ourselves.

Economist L. Randall Wray echoed Krugman's analysis in a Huffington Post piece, adding that the federal government has the ability to issue its own currency to pay debts, a fact that further distorts MacCallum's analogy.

Fox's cheerleading for a showdown over raising the debt limit could result in disastrous consequences for the economy. Following the standoff on raising the debt limit in 2011, Standard & Poor's downgraded the U.S. credit rating, and the Bipartisan Policy Center estimated that the delay in raising it "will cost taxpayers $18.9 billion over 10 years."

Fox has repeatedly misled viewers over the debt limit in recent years, erroneously claiming that raising it would be the same as giving the president a "blank check" and obscuring potential negative consequences.

A dancer at Scores rehearses on Aug. 26, 2013, for the strip club's opening inside the Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. next month. It will mark the first time in 35 years of legalized gambling in New Jersey that a strip club has opened within a casino.

What if, after seven years of plunging casino revenues and fleeing customers, Atlantic City's real problem was this: People are wearing too much clothing?

Scores, the famous New York strip club, will open a satellite establishment inside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort next month ? the first strip club in an Atlantic City casino in the 35 years of legal gambling at the New Jersey shore resort.

It will be the most audacious adult offering in an Atlantic City casino, though it's not the first: Revel has offered the Royal Jelly burlesque show since it opened, the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa hosts a burlesque show every Thursday night, and dancers in bras and panties are common on gambling floors, including at the Tropicana Casino and Resort and the Showboat Casino Hotel.

"We feel this is the third leg of the Atlantic City triangle: gambling, alcohol and adult entertainment," said Bob Gans, Scores' managing partner. "It's a natural."

Since 2006, when the first casino opened in Pennsylvania and began taking away business that had gone to New Jersey for three decades, Atlantic City has been struggling with new competition popping up all around it. Revenue has fallen from $5.2 billion that year to just over $3 billion last year, and thousands of jobs have been lost in a decline that shows no signs of ending.

In addition to family-friendly attractions like a revamped Steel Pier amusement park, the return of the Miss America pageant and free outdoor light shows on Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City has been looking for other ways to separate people and their money. The seaside resort has a century-old reputation as an adult playground, so it's somewhat surprising it took this long for strippers to make their way inside the gambling halls.

Gans is investing $25 million in the newest Scores, which will open Sept. 12 with five private VIP rooms, 11 stripper poles and an ultra-VIP room for celebrities and high-rollers.

Cover charges will range from $10 to $30. The club's Diamond Dollars, which cash-strapped customers can charge to their credit cards, come with a steep 20 percent markup: $100 worth of club dollars costs $120.

Patrons and employees will have to behave; New Jersey laws governing casinos prohibit total nudity. In approving the club in December 2011, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement issued a ruling that bordered on an anatomy lesson, governing in explicit detail what can be shown and what needs to stay covered. In short, dancers may strip down only to a G-string and pasties, small fabric patches that cover the nipples. Lap dances are prohibited, as is any simulation of sexual activity.?

While Las Vegas is known for its racy offerings, there are no strip clubs inside any casinos in the Nevada desert city. Several offer topless stage shows and topless pools, and strip clubs regularly offer free transportation from anywhere near the Strip, including casinos.

One pool venture didn't fare as well. The Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino partnered with a strip club to run a topless pool at the casino, but the casino shut it down in 2009 after an undercover bust resulted in 11 arrests for various prostitution charges.

Gans is confident Scores will succeed, even in a city with four other strip clubs, including one with all-nude dancers.

"There are 30 million people who come to Atlantic City every year," he said. "You have the safety of a hotel casino, and we have the right brand and the know-how to do something that hasn't been done before. We can be the Pied Piper here."

Nine Inch Nails masters new album a second time for high-end audio gear

Nine Inch Nails masters new album a second time for highend audio devices

Many audiophiles will tell you that modern albums are too "loud" -- that the mastering process emphasizes bass and volume over subtlety. Nine Inch Nails will soon cater to these more demanding listeners with a special Audiophile Mastering Edition of its upcoming Hesitation Marks album. The additional mix will be truer to what Trent Reznor and crew heard in the studio, and should sound best on high-end audio equipment that can reproduce a wide audio range. The band warns that most fans won't notice the difference with this new version. However, there's no penalty for giving it a try -- anyone who buys Hesitation Marks from NIN's site will get to download the Audiophile cut for free when the album launches on September 3rd.

7 Gorgeous Bridesmaid Dresses for The Most Beautiful Fall Wedding ...

The best bridesmaid dresses for fall complement the season and your personal style. Jewel tones, thicker fabrics, and longer hems are all great choices for fall bridesmaid gowns, however anything goes. Here are my picks for gorgeous bridesmaid dresses for a beautiful fall wedding.

Alfred Sung has many gorgeous bridesmaid dresses for fall, but I'm particularly loving Style D535. The high neck with bow adds a level of sophistication which is perfect if your wedding is a black tie affair. The wide belt at the waist is slimming and adds great dimension to the dress. The full shirred skirt has pockets so your bridesmaids can keep extra powder and lipgloss handy for discreet touch ups before the ceremony and reception. This dress comes in over 30 colors so you can get it to match the colors you've picked out for the ceremony. You can also order this dress in cocktail length. You can purchase one at bestbridalprices.com for under $200.

Tell me about the Walden University M.A.T. in Early Childhood Education.

My girlfriend has a B.A. in Anthropology and wants to teach small children. We've been looking at the best ways to make this happen. We are looking at some local options around NYC, but also considering Walden University's M.A.T. in ECE.

Some hesitancy due to Walden's online and for profit nature, but they are regionally accredited, the price isn't outrageous, and they are a Minnesota state approved program. Completion of the program makes you eligible for MN licensure.

Since they are MN approved it seems to us that it can lead to a license usable in pretty much any state, either directly from another state, or by getting a MN license and using that to obtain a license from another state under reciprocity rules.

Are we missing anything here? Will completing Walden's program reasonably lead to the legal ability to teach small children in NY or NJ? Does anyone have any personal experience with Walden's education degrees? Any other amazing options for doing this (or teaching small children with her existing B.A.) in the NYC area are welcome too!

    Mayor Garcetti's DWP test

Last week's agreement between the city and the DWP workers union was partly the result of a new mayor who took a new approach to bargaining. But perhaps more could have been achieved.

The labor agreement announced last week by Mayor Eric Garcetti, members of the City Council and representatives of the union representing Los Angeles Department of Water and Power workers is the result of talks begun more than a year ago. Those talks came about, months ahead of schedule, because of a conviction by city budget staff that salary, pension and healthcare costs had to be brought under control, and an acknowledgment by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 18 that it had to help control them ? or face either a backlash at the ballot box or a financially unsustainable city.

As it turns out, there was an early ballot box backlash: The millions of dollars that Local 18 spent to support mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel helped persuade many voters to instead back Garcetti. That put the new mayor ? a purveyor of progressive politics and a longtime champion of organized labor, including public sector unions ? in the extraordinarily odd position of being the one guy with the most potential to stare down Local 18 at the bargaining table.

So how did he do? And how did he do it?

During the final two weeks of an unusually public discussion and debate over the contract, Garcetti acknowledged that it was the fact of his election that gave the management side whatever additional clout it had at the bargaining table. It was, in other words, the message sent in May by voters more than any sent since then by Garcetti that made a difference.

Garcetti showed that he may stand with, or even behind, angry voters and ratepayers if the tactic suits him. He made an unexpected in-person appearance at a neighborhood council forum to promise a firm stance, and he launched an online signature petition to drum up support. He laid bare his demands, but it was difficult to determine exactly what they were or whether they were achieved.

For example, a salary structure no longer pegged to the cost of living in 2016 will emerge as a win or a loss for the city budget only when we see how the economy is performing at that point. Claimed employee contributions to healthcare costs are especially shadowy; the deal will allow Garcetti to argue that there are indeed such contributions while allowing the other city unions he will sit down with next year to argue that there are not. A focus on work rules is good, but perhaps at least as much the result of news stories as of hard bargaining by the mayor. A new pension tier was already on the table.

Garcetti added some noise, some low-key drama and, it's important to note, some public attention paid to a matter ? a labor contract ? that more typically gets wrapped up behind the scenes. It may be a hallmark of Garcetti's style, or perhaps simply of all Los Angeles politics, that the result is only partly satisfying and yet still, for now, satisfactory.
