Our camper roof has leaked & caused interior damage. We want to repair it but when I looked for repair products I found several for different types of roofs. So how do I figure out what type or roof do I have? Rubber or aluminum? There is a silver looking coating on top and many cracks in the coating. Also, is ther an easier way to repair the rotted out wood inside than replacing the wood, can I just patch the area with a wood filler?

If you're buying or selling a house, did your real estate agent explain the difference between a buyer's agent, a seller's agent, a cooperating agent and a dual agent?

"Dual agency" happens when the buyer and seller in a single transaction end up being represented by agents working for the same real estate broker. Maryland law bars a single agent from representing both parties, but the agent's broker can do so, according to the Maryland Real Estate Commission.

John F. Sullivan, a Maryland agent who works only for buyers and thinks dual agency is fraught with conflicts of interest, is hoping the General Assembly passes a bill that would make the disclosure form disclose more -- bringing the state into a tug-of-war between a trade group for Realtors and the trade group for brokerages that represent buyers only.

He's planning to testify this week that "chronic misunderstandings about agent fiduciary responsibility have contributed to the foreclosure crisis both in Maryland and across the nation" -- namely that buyers weren't given good advice by agents about what they could actually afford, and thus did not have their best interests protected.

Senate Bill 644 would add the terms "exclusive buyer agent" and "exclusive seller agent" -- the intent is that only agents working for brokerages that just represent buyers could call themselves the former, and only agents at brokerages that just represent sellers could call themselves the latter, Sullivan said.

The bill would also require that consumers be given an explanation of what "single agency" means (the opposite of dual -- representing only the buyer or the seller in the same transaction) and what a "subagent" is (someone assisting the buyer but employed by the brokerage being used by the seller).

Oh, and the consent form a buyer and seller are supposed to sign if they end up with same real estate broker? It would be changed to say that "there will likely be a conflict of interest because the interests of the seller and the buyer are different or adverse" -- rather than the current "may be a conflict of interest" and "may be different or adverse."?

"If passed, these changes to the Real Estate Brokers Act ... would provide the consumer with all of their agency choices when selling or buying their home," Sullivan, an exclusive buyer agent who is vice president of Buyer's Edge Co. Inc., wrote in an email. "It would be the first of the 50 State agency disclosure statements in the country to provide the consumer with all their agency options including exclusive buyer, exclusive seller and most importantly single agency."

The Maryland Association of Realtors says thanks but no thanks. Mark Feinroth, director of regulatory affairs with the trade group, said the National Association of Exclusive Buyer Agents asked the state real estate commission to change the disclosure form last year. The commission declined. This bill seems to grow out of that request and "makes a big change in agency law that's really unwarranted," he said.

"We think this is an effort by the exclusive buyers' agents to have their business model shown as a preference in the process and in the form," Feinroth said. "They're certainly entitled to their business model ... but we don't think it's appropriate for any business model to be preferred in the statute. And we think that's really what they're asking."

Agency -- who's representing whom -- "is already the most difficult concept to train licensees in, and it's a very difficult concept to explain to consumers," Feinroth said. "I think this will make it even harder to understand."

The Maryland Real Estate Commission voted to oppose the bill. The executive director said through a spokeswoman last week that the commission wouldn't comment on the reasons until the hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Annapolis.

Sullivan, the exclusive buyer agent, said it doesn't surprise him that the commission opposes it because a majority of the members are industry players, and the industry likes the disclosure form as is.

He is trying to get consumers to think twice about what type of agent to hire. He was president of the National Association of Exclusive Buyer Agents in 2009, when the group surveyed members about their transactions in the previous three years and then determined how many ended in foreclosure. It was 0.8 percent, less than half the rate of foreclosure nationwide, the trade group said.

Sullivan says clear disclosure would be better for sellers, not just buyers -- and for agents, too. This piece delves into the legal implications for agents when they purposely or accidentally breach their fiduciary duty.

The civil trial over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster, which was due to start in New Orleans on Monday, has been delayed for a week, to allow for further talks on a settlement.

The BP-operated rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, killing 11 workers and leaking four million barrels of oil from BP's Macondo well.

The trial is to resolve claims for damages and civil penalties.

BP has so far paid $7.5bn in clean-up costs and compensation.

In a joint statement, BP and the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee - a group of lawyers representing victims of the spill, confirmed that the trial would now start on 5 March.

"This adjournment is intended to allow BP and the PSC more time to continue settlement discussions and attempt to reach an agreement," the statement said.

"BP and the PSC are working to reach agreement to fairly compensate people and businesses affected by the Deepwater Horizon accident and oil spill. There can be no assurance that these discussions will lead to a settlement agreement," the statement added.

One lawyer close to the case told the BBC that the different parties were still far apart in negotiations over settlements.

The spill released more than four million barrels of crude oil from BP's Macondo well.

BP and its partners face the threat of tens of billions of dollars in fines and penalties if found grossly negligent in the case.

The UK firm is expected to blame its main contactor, Halliburton, which is a fellow defendant.

US President Barack Obama called the spill "the worst environmental disaster the nation has ever faced".

It took 85 days to permanently stop the release of crude oil.

Fellow contractor Transocean, the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig, is also a defendant in the case.

Judge Carl Barbier, an expert in maritime law, consolidated hundreds of spill-related lawsuits into a single case.

He is tasked with determining how much of the blame rests with each party and whether punitive damages should be imposed.

Naseer Mehdawi, Anthony Shadid's closest Iraqi friend and journalism colleague, recalls their friendship and how together they told the story of Iraq.

Reporters are cantankerous, competitive and frequently catty. Yet Anthony Shadid's sad and untimely death has brought forth nothing but praise and admiration from every corner. An old friend reminded me yesterday of a conversation in 2006 in which I told her that "Shadid, hands down, is the best reporter working in Iraq." I suspect all of us who covered the war there said that at one time or another. Like all of us, of course, he had help, particularly from Naseer Mehdawi, the Iraqi colleague who worked with him on the stories that landed Anthony the 2004 Pulitzer.

I remember the first time I met Anthony Shadid in February 2003. I had been working for The Washington Post in Baghdad with Rajiv Chandrasekaran and the photographer Michael Robinson Chavez. Anthony had joined Rajiv and me and Chavez. Rajiv introduced Anthony to me and told me that he was a great journalist. He had been working with another paper, but the Post hired him because he is the best. Then orders came from Phil Bennett, who was the Post?s assistant managing editor for foreign news at the time, that all the journalists of the Post should leave Iraq because the troops were gathering in the Gulf and the war would happen. But Anthony refused. He stayed and asked me if I would like to stay with him. I was very interested in journalism and looking at what might happen. Rajiv left with Chavez to wait in Kuwait. (They later returned after the war started.) It was only me and Anthony. Our driver was Karim Sadon. After that we were pretty much Anthony?s team, me and Karim. Everyone at the Post knew that we were Anthony?s guys.

I started my journey with Anthony looking for people expressing their feeling about what would happen. I had an instinct that the regime would collapse. I made up my mind to help him and support him. I took Anthony to Kadhamiya, a large Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad. All the people there hated Saddam because he was targeting them and killed many of their families during the uprising after the 1991 Gulf War. When I told Anthony about this, he was happy about the tip, and he started to get closer to me, to count on me. I had begun to think like Anthony, to know the kinds of stories he wanted, the people he wanted to meet. Anthony liked talking to people on the streets, the real people who were affected by Saddam and affected by the war. His confidence in me became stronger.

I remember that Saddam?s Information Ministry gave us an order to go to specific places. We refused. We went to forbidden places that no one dared to go except me and Anthony. At restaurants we?d talk about where to go next, all the places Saddam did not want us to see. We set out on daily trips with our brave driver, Karim, going to various parts of the country, meeting people, discussing issues, and making friends. We met workers at factories, farmers in the fields, government employees who were fed up with the restrictions of the regime, university students aspiring for an opportunity to be free and express their woes and dreams, clerics secluded inside their small mosques, and just simple, down-to-earth people. We listened to stories of women who had lost their husbands and sons in the many wars waged by the regime.

It?s only on its first draft so it?ll probably look stupid and no one will think it?s any good
I don?t want anyone ?stealing? my ideas or thoughts

But the craziest thing has happened since I started telling more people, especially my friends, colleagues, family and clients.? They?ve been extremely supportive, everything from saying that I?m doing a great job to offering to read chapters for me and provide feedback.

Ironically enough I also just recently completed a section in the book on getting support for your health, fitness or weight change journey.? Another section also contains the ?five beliefs? of permanent success.? And as I write them geared toward a health and fitness audience, I realize that so much of the content applies to all of life?s pursuits.

We can?t do it all alone, or at least if we do, it takes a heck of a lot longer and is a lot harder.? That doesn?t sound like much fun.? So who cares if my book doesn?t have a specific timeline, it will be written and finished.? So what if my first draft is disjointed and missing information, that?s the point of drafts!? And finally, why would anyone who actually cares about me steal my ideas?!?? It?s quite ridiculous now that I think about it.? And now I want you to do the same as well if you?ve been trying to go at it alone with your own health improvement or weight change journey.

Tell friends, family and colleagues about your pursuits.? You will get a lot more cheers than jeers (and if someone jeers you, are they really your friend?!?).
Create a support system of people (name, email, phone #, twitter handle, etc.) that you can call when you are having a lousy day and are tempted to run to the bakery instead of the gym.
Ask for feedback and insights from those who have succeeded in achieving the goals you want to accomplish.? Thank them for their feedback and if it resonates with you, take action!
Join community groups either on-line or in-person.? That?s one of the best features of Weight Watchers for weight loss.
Or start your own community group with friends and family members that may be looking to improve their health or fitness.? You don?t all need to be going for the same exact goal, just ones that require some motivation, accountability and guidance.
