2013-02-22 03:16:18 (GMT) (WiredPRNews.com - Fashion, Press Releases)

02/21/2013 (press release: OnlinePR) // UK

Fast fashion retailer Missguided reports on the hottest and must have trends for SS13 from the UK?s most fashionable city?

What goes on outside of Somerset House has in recent years become just as important as what happens on the catwalks at London Fashion Week, the style team at Missguided took to the streets of London to style spot the ladies who were pounding the pavements in the hottest looks and to discover what?s inspiring the fashion elite this season.

Everyone from the likes of bloggers to stylists, who visit the catwalks has a different take on the everyday uniform at London Fashion Week and each of them have their own unique style. The fashion pack put themselves together for 5 long days of posing at the shows in an incredible way and never fail to look anything less than 100% amazing. Bloggers are now as observed just as much as the clothes on the catwalks and the designer collections they are there to cover and London is renowned for producing edgy and amazing trends season after season, year after year. We went out and about at London Fashion Week in search of real girls who seemed to get the style balance just right ? amongst the amazing outfits worn we spotted 4 key trends that are a must have for every girl?s wardrobe this season and can be worn right now?

Moving away from AW and echoing what was seen earlier this month in New York - neon was a huge trend supported by many at London Fashion Week. - We spotted neon beanies, neon trousers, and neon bags with popular colours including tangerine, power-pop pink and sunshine yellow. Neon brights lit up the London streets ? proving colour is back on the style agenda for SS13. We say dare to wear block colours and do it proud for SS13.

Returning for another season of fashion domination, London fashion week also saw denim demand attention in the style of boyfriend jeans, dungarees and chic shirts. Team denim with more denim to create the laid back look for spring.

Leatherette returned to the streets for another season of style authority ? this time round it?s picked up pace and found its way on everything from skater dresses to thigh clinging shorts. Smokin? hot and effortless, leatherette pieces formed the basis of some of the coolest looks of fashion week. Opt for a leatherette skater or high shine leggings to get in on the action.

London Fashion week sported a high contrast mix of monochromatic tones. Get ready for a fashion stand off as opposites collide with black and white mixing for a monochromatic style fusion. The monochrome trend is easy to wear, relaxed and timeless and is tipped to be the heaviest hitting trend for 2013.

China Mobile, DT Jump Into LTE Patent Pool

Networking the Telecom Industry

February 22, 2013 | SAN FRANCISCO -- Via Licensing Corporation today announced the addition of two significant licensors to its LTE (Long Term Evolution) patent pool. China Mobile Communication Co., Ltd, and Deutsche Telekom join AT&T, Clearwire Corporation, DTVG Licensing, HP, KDDI Corporation, NTT DOCOMO, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telef?nica, and ZTE Corporation among the industry leading companies offering their essential LTE patents through Via Licensing?s patent pool.

By making essential patents available through a patent pool, Via Licensing?s LTE program significantly reduces the risk of litigation for organizations that are building products or services based on the LTE standard. In addition to reducing risk, the LTE patent pool reduces the time and expense incurred by patent holders and licensees by providing access to a broad portfolio of essential LTE Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) through a single, cost-effective transaction. The addition of China Mobile and Deutsche Telekom, two of the world?s largest telecommunications service providers, dramatically enhances the portfolio of LTE standard-essential patents licensed through Via?s LTE patent pool.

?The addition of these key patent holders increases the benefit that the Via LTE patent pool brings to the 4G ecosystem. The inclusion of standard-essential patents from China Mobile and Deutsche Telekom to the LTE patent pool further strengthens the program and ensures licensees worldwide access to critical LTE IPR,? said Roger Ross II, President of Via Licensing.

Baseball pitcher loses ?130million ? because he won?t shave off his beard

Hair raising decision: David Price won?t shave off his beard to join the New York Yankees (Picture: AP)

A leading American sportsman is willing to turn down a $200million contract because of a clause in the deal which would force him to shave off his beard.

David Price is one of the best pitchers in baseball and is expected to to land the ?130m long-term deal his current contract with the Tampa Bay Rays expires in 2015.

His best chances of a record payout is by working out a financial settlement with the traditionally big-spending New York Yankees.

But they maintain a strict policy which commands players are clean shaven with do not have long hair.

Price, 27, isn?t impressed by rules like that and he is prepared to take his chances elsewhere even if it means a smaller contact.

He said: ?I wouldn?t sign a long-term deal there. Those rules, that?s old-school baseball. I was born in ?85. That?s not for me. That?s not something I want to be a part of.?

Kentucky atwitter, Judd's Twitter reveals positions

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WHAS11) -- As actress Ashley Judd considers whether to run for U.S. Senate against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, she is saying very little to the media, but saying a lot to her nearly 161-thousand followers on Twitter.

Judd's intensity for her humanitarian efforts and political activism may be exceeded only by her zeal for the UK Wildcats. Those passions are all reflected in her tweets, including the first campaign-oriented tweet on Wednesday to WFPL Radio's Phillip Bailey.

"And every candidate must have their first race.? No incumbent began as an incumbent," Judd tweeted, later deleting the post.

A review of hundreds of Judd's tweets over the last year reveals her political positions:

October 16, 2012
"Okay, Romney on coal? Wow. Misleading. The era of coal plant is over, unacceptable. It's the dirties(t) and we as USA can do better. Innovate".?

September 30, 2012,
"Flying over mountain top removal coal mining sites - & getting madder than ever. Appalachians deserve better.?

November 3, 2012
"Thank you, Mr President:? "Weapons designed for soldiers and the theatre of war do not belong on the streets."

November 7, 2012
"Its okay to love whim you love. Maryland legalizes same-sex marriage in historic vote"

"She's in tune with national Democrats and that's why the national Democratic party is foaming about her candidacy," said Bob Gunnell, a Louisville-based Democratic strategist.? "but she's not necessarily with Kentucky Democrats.'

Gunnell said he has no doubt that McConnell's campaign has already dug into a gold mine of Judd's past statements to use against her if she decides to run.

September 29, 2012
?Looking for details about why to support Pres. Obama? ?It's time for a new economic patriotism.?? His economic plan.

"If you're Mitch McConnell or a Republican or even a Democrat potentially to challenge her, which I wouldn't count out just yet, you would use that against her to show that she's not in touch with being a senator from Kentucky," Gunnell said.

Many tweets reveal Judd's personality, from the arts to recipes.

Sony's PS4 will lose the console war with its lame video-streaming strategy

Congratulations, Sony, you just lost the console war.

Sony held reporters hostage for two hours Wednesday as it unveiled a new PlayStation controller, made a lot of promises about the PlayStation 4 and showed all the demos in the world. What it didn't show us, aside from an actual PlayStation 4, is any kind of streaming-video strategy aside from the obligatory nod to Netflix. And thus it sealed its fate. There simply is no way Sony can compete with Microsoft without streaming video.

Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, told the assembled press, "The living room is no longer the center of the console ecosystem, the gamer is." Sony wants games to go with you everywhere. That's a smart move, but no matter how you spin it, the PlayStation must be part of the living room if it is to have any hope of taking on the Xbox 360 - and any future consoles coming out of Redmond.

Sony was vague about pretty much everything regarding PlayStation 4. And it said nothing whatsoever about its video content plan -- in fact, the only hint that Sony even has a video content plan was a slide featuring Netflix, Hulu and the like. Sony must do better than that. A lot better. Gamers increasingly look to their consoles as the gateway to streaming content. This is especially true for one of the PlayStation's largest audiences, 20-something cord cutters. Ignoring that audience to show off 90 minutes of demos was a huge mistake. Anyone who watches TV and plays games will be wary of a console that only plays games while taking up valuable HDMI port space.

Microsoft gets this, and has been extremely aggressive in ensuring you keep your Xbox 360 on all the time. Microsoft has teamed up with many on-demand services to bring content to the console. Sure, I can share a video of a game I just played with the yet-to-be-seen PlayStation 4, but can I use it as a DVR cable box? How will I watch Girls and Downtown Abbey on this thing?

Sony's quick mention of streaming apps like Netflix was followed by a promise to talk more about its strategy in the coming year. But if the photo of video-streaming apps that appeared on stage during the presentation is any indication, PlayStation 4 doesn't offer anything more than PlayStation 3. That's a big fail these days. Having a Netflix app on your console is nothing. Everything has a Netflix app. You can watch Netflix on phones, tablets, computers, Blu-ray players and ovens. That's not a strategy, that's keeping up with two years ago.

And so we wait for more news from a company that once upon a time built really cool products people wanted. Sure the demos were dazzling with fire, explosions and so much soft lens flare. But open HDMI ports on HDTVs are scarce, and Sony is entering a tough market. Why would anyone buy a device that does one thing (games) marginally better than another device that also lets you watchGame of Thrones the day it airs? They wouldn't.

The game has changed. It's not just about games anymore.

Apple may be to blame for Foxconn's hiring freeze after all

FORTUNE -- Apple's (AAPL) battered shares took another hit Wednesday -- down $8.84, nearly 2%, for the day -- after the Financial Times attributed a hiring freeze at the Foxconn factories that assemble many of Apple's products to a slowdown in iPhone 5 production.

The stock didn't recover, even after a Foxconn spokesman flatly denied that the freeze had anything to do with the iPhone 5.

Several alternative explanations were quickly put forward:

  • A slowdown in 9.7-inch iPad sales (Fubon Securities analyst Arthur Liao)
  • A decline in Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) PC sales (UBS's Steve Milunovich)
  • A shift to robotic production by Foxconn (CBN Daily)
  • A shift by Apple to other manufacturers (Business Insider's Nicholas Carlson)
  • Fewer workers going AWOL after the Chinese New Year break (RBC's?Amit Daryanani)

What's interesting about that last explanation is that it puts the blame squarely back on Apple.

Historically, according to Daryanani, 20%-30% of Chinese workers don't bother to come back after the holidays to factory jobs where the pay is low and working conditions harsh. This year, according to his sources, return rates may have been closer to 90%.

Could that have anything to do with the fact that Foxconn, pressured by Apple and local workers rights groups, has more than doubled wages and?cut overtime hours?

Clay exhibit takes shape at Douglas College

Lovers of clay may already have March 23 marked on their calendars as the day of the sixth Canadian Clay Ceramic Symposium, held at Burnaby?s Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

But did you know that as part of the symposium, which is held only every three years, events, workshops and exhibits are being put on across the Lower Mainland?

One such celebration happens Feb. 28 through April 12 at the Amelia Douglas Gallery at Douglas College. Formed Earth, Earth Formed is an exhibit of the works of clay artist Judy Weeden and painter/sculptor Ronald T. Crawford.

It may seem like an odd pairing.

The artists?both from Salt Spring Island?work in different mediums, with only Weeden working in clay. Yet they share a common approach in the creative process, and both their works speak of the earth and our home in nature.

?We both make our forms and images through the physical act of creating,? Crawford says. ?In other words, the ideas are a natural result of working at our craft, not preceded by the idea. We both have a love of pattern, and nature.?

?Ronald?s vision is both subtle and elegant, often geologically and time oriented,? adds Weeden. ?Mine is more likely to present an immediate vision of living forms on this earth. For both of us, our vision often becomes abstracted or representational, requiring the viewer?s interpretation.?

? Formed Earth, Earth Formed runs Feb. 28 to April 12 at the Amelia Douglas Gallery, Douglas College, 700 Royal Ave., New Westminster. Meet Weeden and Crawford at the opening reception Feb. 28, 4:30-7:30 p.m., or attend the Artists? Talk March 1, 10 a.m. Admission is free. For more info see douglascollege.ca/artsevents.

Florida governor backs limited Medicaid expansion

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - Florida Governor Rick Scott backed a limited expansion of healthcare coverage for the poor on Wednesday, joining six other Republican governors who have agreed to the measure under President Barack Obama's landmark reform law.

Scott, a wealthy former healthcare executive and vocal critic of the law known as Obamacare, had balked previously at expanding Medicaid.

His surprising about-face, seen by some as a crucial turning point in Republican opposition to the Affordable Care Act, came after the federal government granted Florida a conditional waiver to privatize Medicaid statewide.

Scott made the announcement at a news conference at the governor's mansion in Tallahassee, where he said he would only agree to the expansion for three years while the federal government picks up all the costs.

The legislation would sunset after three years and need to be reauthorized, he said.

"Expanding access to Medicaid access services for three years is a compassionate, common sense step forward," said Scott, reading from prepared remarks.

"It is not the end of our work to improve healthcare. And it is not a white flag of surrender to government-run healthcare," he said.

Scott joins fellow Republican Governors Rick Snyder of Michigan and John Kasich of Ohio in making Medicaid expansion announcements this month. The Republican governors of Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and North Dakota had previously said they would expand the program.

Scott got his start in politics by forming a group called Conservatives for Patients Rights to campaign against Obama's healthcare reforms in 2009. In June last year the U.S. Supreme Court rejected efforts led by Florida and 25 other states to have Obama's healthcare law declared unconstitutional.

Scott's conditional agreement to expand Medicaid in Florida, a move that officials have said could add about 1 million people to the state's Medicaid rolls, must still be approved by the Republican-dominated Florida Legislature. About 3.8 million Floridians have no health insurance, according to the health insurance industry.

Such approval seems far from certain. House Speaker Will Weatherford said the whole idea of expanding "a challenged system" through federal funding required "a big leap of faith" in Washington.

"The money is coming from a government that is having problems balancing its own budget every year - they're about to have a debt-ceiling debate in the coming days to determine if they can pay their bills," Weatherford said.

Medicaid primarily provides healthcare for U.S. citizens or legal residents with low incomes or certain disabilities.

Republican lawmakers have warned in the past that Medicaid's annual costs, which they estimated to total $21 billion in the fourth most populous U.S. state, were putting too much of a burden on Florida's budget.

That is why Scott proposed a privatized or managed care plan for Medicaid recipients to save money. Introduced through a pilot program in five Florida counties, the managed care program has faced criticism for problems including limited access to care, limited doctor participation and excessive red tape.

But the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services granted a conditional waiver to Florida on Wednesday, hours before Scott's news conference, permitting the use of private managed care plans using public dollars on a statewide basis.

Healthcare advocates are reserving final judgment on the privatization plan. But they say some of the worst problems with the managed care program appear to have been addressed.

"Consumer health advocates have fought hard to ensure that access to care and consumer protections remain a top priority," the Community Health Action Network, one statewide group, said in a news release.

Record area of biotech crops used in 2012 -report

(Reuters) - Developing countries accounted for the first time last year for more than half the global biotech crop area, though the United States remains the primary nation making use of genetically altered crops, according to an industry report.

"The developments we will see over the next five years will be in favor of developing countries. That is where the mouths are that we have to feed," said Clive James, chairman of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA), which issued the report.

ISAAA is a pro-biotech industry organization and annually releases a survey of biotech crop plantings around the world.

Monsanto Co., DuPont, Syngenta and other global chemical and seed companies have over the last decade and a half rolled out a variety of genetic traits for agricultural seeds. The most popular genetically modified (GM) traits alter crops like corn, soybeans and cotton so that they can be sprayed with weed killer and still thrive, or resist damaging pests.

Many new types of biotech crops have "stacked traits," or multiple enhancements. The seeds are generally much more costly than conventional seeds, but are marketed as helping boost productivity.

Critics say biotech crops lead to increased pesticide use and environmental damage and have not been proven safe for human and animal consumption, but backers say the crops are no different to normal crops.

ISAAA's report issued Tuesday showed a record 170.3 million hectares of biotech crops were grown around the world last year, up 10.3 million hectares from 2011.

The number of farmers using biotech crops also rose to 17.3 million, up 600,000 from 2011, the report said.

And for the first time, thanks to Brazil's appetite for biotech corn and soybeans, developing countries accounted for more than half of the global biotech crop area, 52 percent, while industrial countries accounted for 48 percent.

In Brazil, biotech crops were planted on 36.6 million hectares in 2012, up 6.3 million hectares from 2011, and approximately 21 percent of the global total.

U.S. farmers continued to be the chief users of biotech crops, however, planting 69.5 million hectares in 2012, up from 69 million in 2011, and roughly 41 percent of the global total.

Argentina planted 23.9 million hectares, or 14 percent of the global total area last year, and Canada had 11.6 million hectares planted to biotech crops, or 7 percent of the global total.

SUDAN TRIES BIOTECH CROPS

Sudan planted biotech crops for the first time last year, sowing about 20,000 hectares of biotech Bt cotton, making it the fourth country in Africa, after South Africa, Burkina Faso and Egypt, to commercialize a biotech crop.

Cuba also planted biotech crops for the first time as farmers there seeded 3,000 hectares of hybrid biotech maize.

Not all countries where farmers have been trying biotech crops were expanding their use. Colombia grew 28,172 hectares of biotech cotton in 2012, down from 49,333 hectares in 2011.

Also, Romania, which planted more than 7,000 hectares of Bt cotton in 2008, planted only 217 hectares in 2012. Prior to its entrance into the European Union, Romania planted more than 100,000 hectares of biotech crops, the report said.

And Egypt planted 1,000 hectares of BT maize in 2012, down from 2,800 hectares in 2011.

The European Union continued to be a difficult market for biotech crop expansion efforts. Though five EU countries planted Monsanto's biotech maize in 2012, BASF ceased commercial operations for biotech crops in the EU last year citing market resistance.

"The EU region is particularly difficult to predict because the issues are not related to science and technology considerations but are of a political nature and influenced by ideological views of activist groups," the ISAAA report states.

The three-year outlook for biotech crops globally was "cautiously optimistic", the report said. Biotech sugarcane is seen as likely to be available in the near term and enhanced Vitamin A rice, transfat-free soybeans and omega-3 rich soybeans are seen becoming prevalent, ISAAA said. The world's first biotech wheat is also expected by 2020, the group said.

British author savages 'plastic' princess Kate

LONDON (Reuters) - One of Britain's most celebrated authors has launched a withering attack on the Duchess of Cambridge, the pregnant wife of Prince William, branding her a "shop-window mannequin" with a plastic smile whose only role in life is to breed.

Prime Minister David Cameron described award-winning writer Hilary Mantel as "misguided" after she likened the former Kate Middleton to a "machine made" doll, devoid of personality.

Her comments about the 31-year-old wife of William, second-in-line to the throne, divided public opinion, with newspapers condemning Mantel as "venomous", "cruel" and "staggeringly rude".

Supporters said her words had been taken out of context from a long analysis of society's centuries-old obsession with the appearance and fertility of royal wives that ended with a plea to "back off and not be brutes" to them.

"I saw Kate becoming a jointed doll on which certain rags are hung," Mantel said in a lecture at the British Museum earlier this month in which she spoke about her changing view of the princess.

"She was a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own, entirely defined by what she wore. These days she is a mother-to-be, and draped in another set of threadbare attributions."

Speaking during a visit to India, Cameron said Mantel was wrong and that people should do more to encourage a young royal who is a "fantastic ambassador for Britain".

"She writes great books, but I think what she's said about Kate Middleton is completely misguided and completely wrong," Cameron told Sky News.

Mantel, who last year became the first Briton to twice win the Man Booker prize for fiction, referred to the princess's severe morning sickness during the early stage of her pregnancy and said her role was to provide an heir.

"Once she gets over being sick, the press will find that she is radiant. They will find that this young woman's life until now was nothing, her only point and purpose being to give birth," Mantel said in the lecture organised by the London Review of Books on February 4. The literary magazine reprinted the lecture on its website this week.

'UNCALLED FOR'

A smiling Duchess of Cambridge showed no sign of being affected by the row when she visited an addiction charity in London. Wearing a grey wrap dress, she crossed her hands over her small baby bump as she chatted to charity workers.

Well-wishers who waited in the late winter sunshine for a glimpse of her expressed sympathy.

"It's totally uncalled for," said Morag Hamilton, 36, from London. "It's a shame - that's what her life is going to become now.".

Mantel, 60, is best known for her historical novel "Wolf Hall", about the rise of blacksmith's son Thomas Cromwell to the pinnacle of power in King Henry VIII's court. Her follow-up "Bring Up the Bodies" recounted Anne Boleyn's fall from grace after failing to give Henry a male heir.

In her lecture, Mantel said the Duchess of Cambridge was "selected for her role ... because she was irreproachable", contrasting her with the "emotional incontinence" of William's late mother, Princess Diana.

"As painfully thin as anyone could wish, without quirks, without oddities, without the risk of the emergence of character. She appears precision-made, machine-made, so different from Diana," Mantel said. The author's agent and a royal spokeswoman declined to comment.

Reaction on Twitter suggested Mantel had split public opinion. Royal commentator Robert Jobson said the "venomous attack" was "unfair and publicity-seeking". Others agreed with Mantel, saying she had elegantly articulated what many people had long thought about the royals.

The lecture looked at the public fascination with the "regal body", examining the lives of royal women and the importance of providing an heir. Mantel compared their fate to caged pandas in captivity.

"Our current royal family doesn't have the difficulties in breeding that pandas do, but pandas and royal persons alike are expensive to conserve and ill-adapted to any modern environment," Mantel said. "But aren't they interesting? Aren't they nice to look at?"

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Nexus 4 vs iPhone 5: S3 Still Best

Last May the world was rocked with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3, and there was no surprise that it went on to become the best-seller that it did. Apple then came up with the Apple iPhone 5 in September and then it was the turn of LG with the LG Nexus 4, in November. Can these two beat the reigning champion though?

The LG Nexus 4 is powered by the Qualcomm 1.5GHz processor, the 1.2GHz dual core runs on the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 has the quad core internationally, while over in the US this is a dual core. The slowest is the Apple iPhone 5, but then it beats the iPhone 4S as it has twice the speed. The LG Nexus 4 comes with four cores along with 2GB of RAM, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has four cores and 1GB or dual cores and 2GB. This means that the LG Nexus 4 beats it.

The LG Nexus 4 comes with Jelly Bean 4.2, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been updated to Jelly Bean 4.1. The Apple iPhone 5 has the latest iOS 6 and of course this is the friendliest of the operating systems. If you need the option of being able to customise your handset then you would have to go for the Android OS. The LG Nexus 4 does have an advantage over the Samsung Galaxy S3 thanks to the fact that it would get updates quicker. What you then have to decide over is which you want out of the LG Nexus 4 and the Apple iPhone 5.

You can get choose the 8GB or 16GB versions of the LG Nexus 4, however there is no SD card support. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is offered in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB and you can add another 64GB on to this. The Apple iPhone 5 comes with the same storage choices as above, however there is no SD card support. The winner here is clearly the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The LG Nexus 4 has a display of 4.7 inches and this is True HD IPS. The resolution is 1280 x 768 and it offers 318 ppi. The Apple iPhone 5 has the IPS display of 4 inches, which comes with a resolution of 306 ppi. The largest display is found on the Samsung Galaxy S3 with 4.8 inches, offering 306 ppi and resolution of 1280 x 720. All of the displays have good and not so good points, and the best will be down to what you want. The IPS displays do tend to offer colours that are the most realistic, while the display of the Super AMOLED display tends to be over saturated. This means that the LG Nexus 4, thanks to it having the larger of the IPS displays, is the winner.

The LG Nexus 4 could offer up to 15 hours of talk time as it comes with a large battery of 2100mAh. The Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 will both give up to 8 hours. AnandTech did research and this showed that the Apple iPhone 5 came on top with its battery, closely followed by the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Nexus 4.

The measurements of the LG Nexus 4 are 133.9 mm x 68.7 mm x 9.1 mm and the handset weighs 129 grams. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 135 grams and is 136.6?70.6 mm x 8.6 mm. The Apple iPhone 5 wins thanks to it having the best design and the fact that it is lighter and thinner. However the LG Nexus 4 isn?t far behind for looks.

Anyone who wants NFC would have to choose between the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. Those wanting LTE have the choice of the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Apple iPhone 5. If you want both you do have to go for the Samsung Galaxy S3.

You get an 8 megapixel camera on the LG Nexus 4 and it has 1080p video recording and autofocus. The device has a front camera of 1.3 megapixels. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8 megapixel camera also and this comes with LED flash, autofocus and a camera of 1.9 megapixels on the front. The Apple iPhone 5 will not be outdone as this too has the 8 megapixel camera, along with a 1.2 on the front. All cameras come with points that stand out. With the LG Nexus 4 owners have PhotoSphere, with the Apple iPhone 5 low light photos are superb, while with the Samsung Galaxy S3 you can take video and photos at the same time. The Apple iPhone 5 is the winner here and this is down to the outstanding BSI sensor.

Of all the handsets the Apple iPhone 5 is the easiest of the devices to use and it does come with superb looks. The LG Nexus 4 has a price tag is superb and it is packed with great hardware. However, it is let down by storage and the fact that it doesn?t have LTE. The all-round device is the Samsung Galaxy S3 as it comes packed with all the features expected of a flagship at a fair price.

Whales benefit from action on noise

Scientists are working to reduce the noise levels experienced by whales from North Atlantic shipping.

The blare is making it difficult for the animals to communicate with each other, which in turn is affecting their ability to find food and mates.

The researchers have persuaded shipping companies to change their routes in and around the Boston area.

Sea captains use an iPad App that helps them to understand the locations of the whales and when to slow down.

The change in operations has helped to lower the din. Scientists hope it will also limit the number accidental collisions.

The waters off New England are a home to many species of whale. Many are now suffering because of increased noise levels.

Research presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) suggests that it has doubled each decade over the past 30 years.

The big din

Dr Mark Baumgartner of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution played me the sound of a passing container ship as a whale might hear it.

It was a thunderous, unchanging drone.

"How would you like to have that in your bedroom, your kitchen, your work all the time?" he asked plaintively. "That's what the acoustic environment for whales is like all the time."

The effect is to reduce the range whales can communicate.

"It's as if you are talking at a cocktail party and all of a sudden it is hard to hear because there is all this background noise. A couple of words get dropped, you don't get the meaning of everything that is said to you," says Dr Baumgartner.

"That it what it is like for a lot of whales in the ocean right now."

There is so much commercial shipping activity and it is so loud that scientists are starting to worry about the effect that the noise is having on the whales.

Ship strikes

Social communication is necessary so that they can get together for important activities, such as mating, and it is unclear just what the ramifications of cutting off that communication will mean for them.

But the ships are not just disrupting communication; they also collide with whales from time to time.

Dr Dave Wiley who works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has seen the consequences at first hand.

"Our scientists found shattered bone and large hematomas which are indicative of a ship strike," he told BBC News.

Each year, there are one or two North Atlantic Right Whales stuck by ships in the area. Although that does not sound like a lot, it was enough to concern environmental groups because it is thought that there are just 500 of these animals left in the wild and mothers with calves get hit more frequently.

Whale maps

Dr Wiley and his team worked with the Boston port authorities to find a solution to the problem.

They shared their data of where the whales were and the details of the commercial shipping lanes.

Together, they worked out a new route that would reduce the co-occurrence of whales and ships by 81% and increased the transit time of ships by between nine and 22 minutes.

The new route was accepted by the International Maritime Organization, since when the ships have been using it voluntarily.

Dr Wiley also helped to develop a new iPad application that gives real-time information on the location of whales across the entire East Coast of America so that ships can avoid the large gatherings of the cetaceans.

General acceptance

Boston's vast port nestles close to the skyscrapers of the city's financial district. 1,500 vessels come in and out of here each month, mostly large container ships carrying gas and petroleum products.

Thousands of jobs depend on the commerce here, yet many companies are telling their captains to use the Whale App and the route change.

Andy Hammond, chief executive director of the Boston Harbour Pilots Association, says that the industry has realised that for a little inconvenience they can do an awful lot for whales.

"There was a little bit of resistance at first when they talked about speed reductions," he said. "Oddly enough, we found since they've implemented this, ships have slowed down an awful lot anyway. Initially, I think there was pushback but once they realised that it didn't affect this port that much, they've accepted it."

Mom of Pistorius' slain girlfriend wants answers

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The family of Oscar Pistorius' slain girlfriend wants answers, her mother told a Johannesburg newspaper, as South Africans braced to hear why prosecutors believe a national hero murdered the model who was shot multiple times.

June Steenkamp, Reeva Steenkamp's mother, told The Times in a front page interview published Monday: "Why? Why my little girl? Why did this happen? Why did he do this?"

"Just like that she is gone," the newspaper quoted her as saying in what it described as an emotional telephone interview. "In the blink of an eye and a single breath, the most beautiful person who ever lived is no longer here."

Pistorius, who remains in custody in a red-brick, one-story police station in Pretoria, is set to return to court Tuesday for the start of his bail hearing. It will be the first opportunity for the prosecution to describe evidence police gathered against the 26-year-old double-amputee runner and the reasons why he was charged with murder. Prosecutors allege the killing was premeditated.

Pistorius' family denies he committed murder though they have not addressed whether he shot her. When word first emerged about the killing there was speculation in the local media that Steenkamp had been mistaken for an intruder in Pistorius' home. Police have said that was not something they were considering.

In an email to The Associated Press on Monday, Pistorius' longtime track coach ? who was yet to comment ? said he believes the killing was an accident.

"I pray that we can all, in time, come through this challenging situation following the accident and I am looking forward to the day I can get my boy back on the track," Ampie Louw wrote in his statement. "I am still in shock following the heart-breaking events that occurred last week and my thoughts and prayers are with both of the families involved."

Pistorius' top sponsor, Nike, said in a brief statement to the AP on Monday that it "has no plans for Oscar Pistorius in upcoming campaigns." They declined to give any further information.

While Pistorius goes to court, Steenkamp's funeral will also be held Tuesday in her hometown of Port Elizabeth on South Africa's southern coast, her family said. It is to be a private ceremony at a local crematorium, closed to the public and media.

"We're just taking things one day at a time," Reeva Steenkamp's brother Adam Steenkamp said outside the family home. "But at the moment it's family coming together and the one person who would be the strongest, who held us all together, is unfortunately not here anymore ? and that's my sister."

A 29-year-old blonde model, law graduate and reality TV contestant, Reeva Steenkamp died last week of multiple gunshot wounds inside Pistorius' upscale house in a gated community in the eastern suburbs of the capital, Pretoria.

Police said they arrived in the predawn hours of Thursday ? Valentine's Day ? to find paramedics trying to revive Steenkamp and said that she had been shot four times. A 9 mm pistol was recovered from the scene. Pistorius was arrested and charged with murder the same day.

Prosecutors said in Pistorius' first court appearance Friday that they would pursue a more serious premeditated murder charge against the Olympian and world's most high-profile disabled athlete.

In a statement initially given only to the AP and two South African reporters over the weekend, Arnold Pistorius, Oscar's uncle, said the prosecution's own case would show there was no murder.

"We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegation," he said, "and that the state's own case, including its own forensic evidence, strongly refutes any possibility of a premeditated murder or indeed any murder at all."

The bail hearing, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, will be the first time both the prosecutors and defense will show their hands about the evidence involved in the killing, said Stephen Tuson, an adjunct law professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

"There will kind of be a little trial within a trial," Tuson said of the start of a court case that will likely grip South Africa and much of the world ? possibly for years.

Due to the gravity of the charges, Pistorius' defense lawyers will present their case first, trying to argue that their client is not a danger to the public and won't try to flee to avoid trial, Tuson said. They'll also have to show that he won't try to intimidate witnesses, nor pose a risk of sparking public unrest, the professor said.

The defense does have the opportunity to put Pistorius ? who broke down and wept in his first appearance in court ? on the stand to offer testimony on his own behalf. That likely won't happen, as prosecutors would then be allowed to ask him potentially incriminating questions, Tuson said.

Typically, defense lawyers read a prepared statement in court instead.

From there, prosecutors will offer their own version of events, likely bolstered by testimony from the lead investigator in the killing, Tuson said.

Pistorius has been in custody in Brooklyn police station in Pretoria since Friday. His agent told the AP that there is no way to predict if he will ever run track again.

"For me it's too early to comment," Peet Van Zyl said. "I think it's still a huge shock and tragedy that took the world by surprise so I can't comment on that one (Pistorius' future career) or give any timeline to that at this point in time."

Coach Louw, who is significant for convincing Pistorius to take up track a decade ago and starting him on his journey to worldwide fame, said he had been around Pistorius and Steenkamp, and she often accompanied the athlete to training.

"I found her to be delightful, very friendly ... and I found the two of them to be very happy in each other's company," Louw said.

Coupeville High School lucky to have basketball coach | Letters

Editor,

You recently printed a letter written negatively about the Coupeville High School Girls Basketball Coach David King because some girls did not get to play in their final game. First, I am shocked a newspaper of any stature would print this.

The real story is Coupeville High School athletics benefit hugely from David King?s coaching. Our community owes the King?s a huge amount of gratitude for their efforts with our student-athletes. High school sports are about teaching, learning and winning.

The seniors all played generous amounts during the Senior Night game against Granite Falls in a feel good game against a much lesser opponent. The playoffs are about winning. As a a youth coach, I suggest Coupeville High School is very lucky to have Coach King working with our high school student athletes.

Film about Israeli troops in Gaza takes prize at Berlinale

(JTA)?-- A feature film about Israeli troops in Gaza won a top independent jury prize at the 63rd annual Berlinale International Film Festival.

"Rock the Casbah," by Israeli director Yariv Horowitz, brought home the top prize from the "Conf?d?ration Internationale des Cin?mas d?Art et d?Essai" -? the International Confederation of Art House Cinemas. The prize was announced Saturday.

It was one of several films at the festival that dealt with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The jurors unanimously commended Horowitz both for "the force of the mise-en-sc?ne and the subject," adding that he showed "great intelligence in talking about a very personal situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on one hand" while also delivering a commentary on the futility of war.

Set in the Gaza Strip in the early summer of 1989, the film depicts several days in the life of a company of young Israeli soldiers who have arrived to serve in Israeli-occupied Gaza. One soldier is brutally killed when a washing machine is dropped on him from a rooftop; against this backdrop, the filmmaker takes viewers deeper into the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, as well as into conflicts between the soldiers themselves and within the Arab community with which they come into close contact.

Speaking to viewers at the Berlinale screening, Horowitz said he had received much positive feedback from Israeli audiences, where just about everyone was a former soldier and could relate to some aspect of the film. He said that all the incidents were based on stories told by soldiers serving in various situations.

As in past years, a handful of documentary films at the festival dealt with the ongoing conflict. But this year, "Palestine and the Middle East? was declared a central theme for the documentary section, which included a European premier screening of Udi Aloni's new film "Art/Violence," about the aftermath of the assassination of Arab-Jewish actor and peace activist Juliano Mer-Khamis in April 2011.

Another prizewinning film on the topic of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was "A World Not Ours," a documentary film about life in the Ain el-Helweh Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon by Danish-Palestinian film director Mahdi Fleifel. The film won the festival's annual Peace Prize.

The jury said the film - which documented the life of el-Helweh's family in the camp, one of the oldest in that region - was "free of the usual patterns classifying the conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians [and] thus evolves into a plea for a new peace process in the Middle East."

Renewable energy income key to industry future

With almost one quarter of farmers involved with renewable energy in one form or another, the income from these projects has become a key factor in their future prosperity, according to a leading banker.

Donald MacRae said the importance of the renewable energy sector to farming had emerged from a survey carried out by the Bank of Scotland where almost half of the respondents had listed renewable projects as the second most important non-farming income.

?The findings are good news for farmers investing in production of renewable energy. While planning remains an obstacle, few found difficulties financing their projects allowing them to grow their businesses in difficult economic conditions.

?Farmers are optimistic about their future prospects, but recognise the need for diversification. Renewable energy is playing an increasingly significant role, partly because income is generally consistent with expectations.

?Last year?s poor weather ensured the recession finally caught up with the industry, which had been relatively unscathed. There is no doubt that challenges lie ahead. However, long term prospects are healthy and renewable energy will undoubtedly become increasingly important in the future prosperity of Scotland?s oldest industry.?

The survey revealed that wind power, wood fuel heating and solar power were the most popular options with 16 per cent of respondents saying they were now involved in wind projects and 10 per cent had invested in solar power and wood fuel heating.

Projecting forward, another 16 per cent of farmers plan to progress with wind power in the next 12 months, with 10 per cent going to wood fuel heating and solar power projects and another 4 per cent plan to invest in hydro power.

The survey showed that the biggest obstacle to investment in renewable projects continued to be obtaining planning permission, particularly for wind and hydro power plants.

Of those farmers who said they had set up or planned to set up a wind energy project, 76 per cent stated it had been very difficult or difficult to obtain planning permission. For hydro schemes, 60 per cent described obtaining planning consent as either difficult or very difficult.

Despite the planning problems, financing these schemes was seen as easy by most farmers, with 76 per cent of those setting up a solar project finding it not difficult to finance their investment.

Similarly, 68 per cent of those investing in wood fuel heating and 53 per cent of farmers planning wind power projects found it easy to obtain finance.

On the income side, this had generally been in line or had exceeded expectations. Broken down into different projects all of the wood fuel heating projects had met expectations while 80 per cent of wind power and 78 per cent of solar power projects were categorized as either having met or exceeded expectations.

Neck injury forces VT?s Michael Cole to retire from football

Michael ColeAP

A scary collision in November of last year has cost Michael Cole the remainder of his football playing career.

During the process of making a tackle in Virginia Tech?s loss to Florida State Nov. 8, the redshirt freshman defensive back suffered a frightening injury that was later diagnosed as a cervical neck sprain. ?Cole spent one night in the hospital and, obviously, missed the remainder of the 2012 season.

After undergoing surgery, ?he was still having persistent symptoms,? leading to today?s announcement that ?it was determined that Cole should not continue to play football due to a higher risk of further injury to his neck and spine.?

While he will continue his rehab and is expected to make a full recovery, his playing career has come to an end.

?I would just like to thank Coach Beamer, Coach Stinespring ? who recruited me ? and all of the coaches in making my dreams come true,? a statement from Cole read. ?It truly has been an honor and a blessing to be led by such a highly respected group of people. I would also like to thank my friends and family back home and the entire Hokie Nation, which has supported me throughout my career.

?It pains me that I will never be able to put the pads on again for this prestigious program and university, but in spite of all this, I will forever be a Hokie.?

Cole?s on-field career may be over, but the release states that he will remain an active part of the team on the sidelines in the future. ?Additionally, Cole qualifies for a medical disqualification and will remain on scholarship. ?That scholarship will not count against Tech?s limit of 85.

?I am disappointed that Michael Cole will no longer be playing football at Virginia Tech,? Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. ?Good players with great character are hard to replace. I believe Michael has a great future no matter what road he decides to take.?

After redshirting as a true freshman in 2011, Cole played in all 10 games prior to the injury. He started four of those games as a nickel back, recording 43 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.
