Child killed by police in Congo electoral violence (Reuters)

KINSHASA (Reuters) ? A child was shot dead by police during clashes between supporters of rival political camps in the Democratic Republic of Congo ahead of next month's election, the government and the United Nations said Saturday.

Police intervened after supporters of presidential challenger Etienne Tshisekedi clashed with a group loyal to incumbent Joseph Kabila Friday in the city of Mbuji-Mayi, a Tshisekedi stronghold in Kasai Orientale province.

"Police fired in the air and a young girl was hit, it's a real shame," General Charles Bisengimana, the chief of police, told Reuters by telephone. He did not give the girl's age.

Three others were injured in the violence and running clashes between rival camps continued into Saturday in the city in central Congo, according to Mounoubai Madnodje, spokesman for the U.N.'s peacekeeping mission in the country.

Government spokesman Lambert Mende accused the opposition of deliberately provoking the police but said the security forces needed to act "more professionally," adding that one policeman had been arrested following the death.

The offices of Tshisekedi's UDPS party in the capital Kinshasa were also attacked Saturday afternoon by armed men in jeeps, according to Jacquemain Shabani Lukoo, secretary general of the party.

Congo's November 28 presidential election will be the second since the country emerged from a brutal civil war that left millions dead, and experts have warned that the poll could spark off renewed violence.

Kabila is favorite to be re-elected despite losing considerable support over his failure to tackle corruption or bring total peace to the country, still haunted by rebel groups in its eastern jungles.

Tshisekedi, a veteran opposition politician, is seen as his closest rival, with strong support in the Kasai provinces and in the capital Kinshasa.

Congo's minerals riches have drawn billions of dollars in foreign investment, though developments has been held back by continued violence in parts of the country and worries over contract security.

Police fire mace at Denver protesters, 20 arrested (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? Police in riot gear fired pepper balls and mace into a crowd of economic protesters in Denver on Saturday and arrested 20 after some people entered the grounds of the State Capitol, police said.

Denver Police Spokesman Lt. Matt Murray said about 2,000 demonstrators from "Occupy Wall Street" protests against economic inequality marched peacefully through downtown Denver, as they have done for the past several Saturdays.

But the situation heated up when protesters moved toward the Capitol. The Colorado State Patrol, which provides security for the statehouse, requested aid from Denver police when marchers entered the Capitol grounds, Murray said.

Someone then kicked over a police motorcycle, slightly injuring an officer, and kicked several other officers, he said. Police in riot gear moved in on the crowd, firing pepper balls and mace into the crowd, Murray said.

Murray said the seven arrests were for assault, assault on a police officer, disturbing the peace and disobeying lawful orders.

Thirteen more people were arrested when protesters attempted to erect a tent in a park across from the Capitol. Police took the tent down and protesters who interfered with police were arrested.

One protester was treated by paramedics at the scene after police physically restrained him.

"He was kicking at officers and was very intoxicated," Murray said.

Murray said once police removed the tent, most of the crowd dispersed and the situation calmed down.

IDC: Samsung, ZTE see jump in mobile shipments, Apple slides to fifth place

Q3 earnings reports have been pouring in over the past few days, which means it's time to check in with IDC on the state of the mobile market. The research firm's latest report, released today, is something of a mixed bag. On the one hand, Q3 global shipments increased by 12.8 percent year-over-year -- higher than the 9.3 percent that IDC had predicted for the quarter and the 9.8 percent growth observed last quarter. At the same time, however, the market grew at the second slowest pace in two years and shipments to Western Europe and the US actually declined over the year, something the company attributes to more restrained consumer spending and more widespread economic uncertainty.

On the company level, both Samsung and ZTE came away as the biggest winners this quarter; Sammy's shipments increased by 23 percent over the year, good for second place, while ZTE's shot up by a whopping 57.9 percent, launching the company into fourth place. Apple, meanwhile, saw 26.2 percent growth in its shipments and a slight bump in market share, but still couldn't avoid getting leapfrogged by ZTE and dropping down to fifth place. And then there's LG, which had by far the worst quarter, relative to Q3 2010. The manufacturer saw shipments decline by nearly 26 percent over the year, while its market share slipped to 5.4 percent. All these horses, however, are still chasing Nokia, which saw a small drop in shipments, but managed to hang on to the top spot, with over 106 million shipments during the quarter -- good for 27 percent of the market. For more numbers and insight, check out the full PR after the break.

Wenger sees discontent, says skepticism too high

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:54 a.m. ET Oct. 27, 2011

LONDON (AP) -Arsene Wenger acknowledged that there is skepticism and discontent among Arsenal fans, but asked a stormy shareholders' meeting Thursday to continue trusting in his team despite a seven-year trophy drought.

"Not many people at the moment are behind us," Wenger said at one of the most heated annual general meetings of his 15-year reign following Arsenal's worst start to a season in more than 50 years.

But before trying to allay fears over Arsenal's lack of competitiveness, Wenger's vision did receive the full backing of Stan Kroenke in the American's first comments at an AGM since his takeover.

Wenger was described by the sports tycoon as a "wonderful manager on the pitch who makes great decisions in regard to personnel, and (has) a tremendous following with the supporters."

But even Wenger, who has won the three Premier League titles, has seen support draining in recent weeks.

"I can see a lot of fear, even discontent amongst you and I can understand that because we live in a world where we fight with people who have extremely high resources," the 62-year-old Wenger told shareholders inside the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal's last major titles came through the Premier League in 2004 and the FA Cup in 2005 - two years before Kroenke began investing in a team he now controls.

The Gunners have been spending sparsely and seen the departure of key players including Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas, while the gulf with Manchester United and now Manchester City has grown.

Wenger's side is already 13 points behind leader City after nine matches.

"I would just like personally to turn around the skepticism that is surrounding this club at the moment - for me it is too high," he said. "And if I just would like to achieve one thing today it is 'Trust us, this team has qualities, this team will fight."'

Wenger said he takes "full responsibility" for Arsenal retaining its self-sufficiency model.

"The way we can compete is to try to be intelligent but as well to be united because it is very difficult to be consistent in football," he said. "We have been more consistent than anybody else in the world in the last 15 years. To stay at the top, top level, we have to be united. That doesn't mean I am not to be criticized. I accept that is part of my job and that the board has been criticized."

In fact, one shareholder called for Peter Hill-Wood to be removed as chairman - 29 years after succeeding his father - but was rejected.

"Peter has our support and we are with you," Kroenke said. "We are fans too."

There was also no appetite to bring back former vice chairman David Dein, who was instrumental in transfer negotiations, or to give the second-highest shareholder, Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov, a place on the board despite owning almost 30 percent of the club.

Kroenke has been under pressure from shareholders to speak publicly about his plans for Arsenal in recent years but he has waited until after taking control by raising his stake to more than two-thirds of the shares.

The Denver-based Kroenke, who also owns the NFL's St. Louis Rams, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids, only spoke briefly.

"Arsenal has all the elements that you need to have success in this kind of business," Kroenke said.

"We are glad to be here, are happy with the direction of the club and are here for the long term," he added. "We love London, you had better get used to seeing us, because we will be around."

Judge accepts plea in Fla. family shootings case (AP)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ? A South Florida man pleaded guilty Thursday to gunning down four relatives during a 2009 Thanksgiving massacre in a deal that will spare him the death penalty in exchange for seven consecutive life sentences.

Family members wept in court, calling Paul Merhige a monster and describing daily life that became unbearable after he killed their loved ones in a rampage that sparked a massive manhunt. Merhige was found about a month later at a motel in the Florida Keys.

Jim Sitton, whose 6-year-old daughter Makayla was killed in the rampage, fell to his knees, begging Judge Joseph Marx not to accept a deal. Deputies surrounded Sitton and ordered him off the ground. Later, the father held locks of his daughter's hair and tearfully shared the void in his life. His wife, Muriel Sitton, said she would never forget seeing Makayla's body on the stretcher, never to hear her daughter's voice again.

"If the death penalty isn't for this guy, who's the death penalty for?" Jim Sitton said after the hearing, standing by family members including his wife, who is five months pregnant with a girl.

The victims were Merhige's twin sisters, one of whom was pregnant; his aunt, who was Muriel Sitton's mother; and Makayla, who had been tucked into bed not long before. Others were hurt, including one relative who spent three months in a coma.

"This killer you see in the courtroom today is not the man that was in our home that night. (He) was a cold blooded killer without remorse without mercy just gunned down of our family members and would have killed more of us had we not escaped out of the house," Muriel Sitton said.

Some 16 people were at the home Nov. 26, 2009, including a last-minute guest, Muriel Sitton's cousin Paul Merhige. They enjoyed a traditional dinner and then gathered in a horseshoe around their brown Baldwin piano to sing and dance, mostly church songs. As the night wore on, police say Merhige left the house and returned with a gun.

Court documents show Merhige considered killing himself after the shootings. He ordered an assisted suicide handbook in the days after the killings. He also began loading up on supplies needed to kill himself, including helium, plastic bags, scissors, duct tape and tubing. He never followed through, and was arrested about a month later in the Keys.

Jim Sitton said the deal was hastily thrown together and that he only learned about it two days ago.

The plea agreement comes after Merhige's attorneys filed a notice signaling they may use an insanity defense. As part of the deal, the defense withdrew that notice.

State Attorney Michael McAuliffe said the decision was difficult as he considered victims who wanted a resolution so they could rebuild their lives, and other victims who felt anything short of an execution was injustice. His office was seeking the death penalty for Merhige, but withdrew that and accepted the plea deal after Merhige's attorneys recently approached them with an offer. McAuliffe said the majority of victims and relatives agreed with the decision.

"I have taken all these deeply held beliefs and sometimes conflicting wishes and sentiment into account in agreeing to this resolution," McAuliffe said.

He said cost was not a factor, but said he did consider the prolonged litigation that often accompanies death penalty cases.

During the hearing, Merhige's parents said they supported the deal, but Carole Merhige said her life was ruined after losing her two daughters and a son who is now in jail.

The judge said the life sentences were the strongest he could impose after the death penalty was taken off the table.

Patrick Knight, whose wife was killed, said he agreed with the plea, but called Merhige a fat loser who was jealous and angry.

Sitton said he dropped to his knees before the judge because "they listened to the murderer's plea. I thought maybe if I dropped to my knees someone would listen to me."

Marx said postponing the hearing wouldn't change his analysis and acknowledged the victims' sufferings.

After the hearing, the Sittons said they look forward to the birth of their new baby and will continue to honor Makayla's memory. They started a foundation bearing her name to carry on her love of dance and music. An annual concert has been started in her honor.

"We're having a girl but it's very bittersweet ... there will always be someone missing," Muriel Sitton said.

Economy expands 2.5 percent in the third quarter

The economy continued to expand with real GDP increasing at an annualized rate of 2.5 percent from the second quarter of 2011.

Today, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released their first "estimate" of the Q3 2011 GDP report showing that the economy continued to expand with real GDP increasing at an annualized rate of just 2.5% from Q2 2011.

On a year-over-year basis real GDP increased 1.62% while the quarter-to-quarter non-annualized percent change was 0.61%.

The latest quarterly results indicate that the only notable source of weakness in the economy came from government expenditures with non-defense spending declining 3.7% while state and local spending declined declined by 1.3%.

Fixed investment purportedly made notable contributions to Q3 GDP with non-residential fixed investment increasing 16.3% from Q2 2011 while residential fixed investment increased 2.4% over the same period.

Personal consumption expenditures also increased notably increasing 2.4% from Q2 2011.

Keep in mind that these results are likely very poorly estimated and are sure to be revised notably in following quarters and even years to come.

Sony HomeShare review: A wireless music system for more than just your iPod (Digital Trends)

sony-homeshare-system

Read on for an overview of the Sony HomeShare system, then check out our full reviews of Sony HomeShare components:

At CES 2011, Sony announced it was moving away from its Altus line of wireless speakers in favor of a suite of products centered around what it called HomeShare. In a rather surprising move, Sony?s HomeShare bucks the company?s trend of going the proprietary route in hopes that others will eventually toe its line. Instead, HomeShare is a non-proprietary, DLNA-based system that can access and wirelessly share most music file types stored on a networked PC or NAS drive.

While the technology is also coming available through select Sony Blu-Ray disc players, micro systems and TVs, HomeShare made its debut through five currently available network music products (and now a sixth, forthcoming speaker which was just recently announced at CEDIA 2011). You?ve got the NAC-SV10i iPod/iPhone dock, the NAS-SV20i iPod/iPhone speaker dock, the CMT-MX700Ni micro system, the SA-NS300 wireless network speaker and SA-NS400 wireless network speaker. Sony also recently introduced the RMN-U1 universal touch-screen remote control which, as it happens, integrates nicely with HomeShare to control any compatible devices in the home.

Though any of these devices can be used on their own, the real fun seems to be centered around integration. Perhaps that?s why Sony sent us a trio of HomeShare devices to evaluate together. But,to keep things simple, we decided to evaluate each of the components individually and publish separate reviews for the NAC-SV10i iPod/iPhone dock, SA-NS300 wireless network speaker and RMN-U1 universal touch-screen remote.

It comes down to this: Each of the products had their positive and not-so-positive points. Our biggest challenge was consistent network connectivity. Of the three devices we tested, the RMN-U1 was the most consistently easy to use. Unlike the network speaker and iPod/iPhone dock, it never seemed to have trouble communicating through our network (which was not occupied with any other tasks or accessed by any other machines during our tests, by the way). Also, the remote is definitely the ideal control interface for the HomeShare product family. The only real problem we see is that the RMN-U1?s $300 asking price makes attaining an easy to use wireless music system from Sony a pricier proposition. Of course, considering how much more the system can do than some similarly priced AirPlay speaker systems, maybe this product family is more competitively priced than we first thought.

Used individually, each of the three HomeShare devices we tested were able to provide some useful functions, albeit with some quirks here and there. Yet, it was when the three individuals were brought together as a team that a useful, comprehensive wireless system was born. We like most things modular, but in this case we?re going to say that the whole was definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Though individually rated in each review, we?d give the entire HomeShare system a respectable 8.0 rating.

Stocks end higher on reports of help for Europe (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stock indexes finished higher Wednesday following reports that China will come to the aid of Europe by investing in a financial rescue fund.

Agence France-Presse reported that China has agreed to invest in Europe's financial rescue fund, which will be used to support struggling countries and banks in the European Union. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped more than 100 points after the report came out in the early afternoon.

Stocks had been mixed for much of the day as investors weighed stronger earnings from Boeing and Corning with uncertainty about the outcome of a key meeting among European leaders.

Top European officials met in Brussels to discuss how to contain the region's debt crisis, which has festered for two years. One consideration is increasing the power of a financial rescue fund, which Germany's parliament approved shortly before U.S. stock markets opened.

European officials announced a plan after the U.S. market closed that will require the region's banks to increase their levels of cash to better protect themselves from losses on the Greek bonds they hold. European governments have been pressing the banks to forgive significant amounts of the Greek government's debt.

"This is a total news and rumor-driven market right now, and everyone's attention is focused on Europe," said Joe Bell, an analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 162.42 points, or 1.4 percent, to 11,869.04. Boeing Co. led the way. It rose 4.5 percent after it reported a bigger profit for its latest quarter than analysts expected. It also raised its forecast for 2011 earnings.

The S&P 500 index rose 12.95, or 1.1 percent, to 1,242. The Nasdaq composite added 12.25, or 0.5 percent, to 2,650.67. Amazon.com Inc. slumped 12.7 percent after reporting a 73 percent drop in income. The retailer cited higher costs for expansion.

Strong economic reports also helped send stocks higher. Businesses ordered more heavy machinery and other long-lasting manufactured goods last month, after excluding aircraft orders, which can be volatile. That indicates businesses are still spending on equipment despite worries about a weak economy and Europe's debt problems. Sales of new homes rose in September after falling for four straight months. Lower home prices enticed buyers.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.21 percent from 2.14 percent late Tuesday as demand diminished for assets perceived to be relatively safe.

Corning Inc. rose 3 percent after reporting a 3 percent increase in income last quarter on stronger sales of glass for flat-panel televisions. Its earnings and revenue beat analysts' expectations.

First Solar Inc. rose 6.6 percent. It reported results a week earlier than expected, and revenue and earnings both improved. That helped the stock recover some of its losses from Tuesday, when it fell 24 percent after the surprise departure of the company's chief executive.

Five stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was slightly above average at 4.8 billion shares.

    Restraint improves dielectric performance, lifespan

    Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Just as a corset improves the appearance of its wearer by keeping everything tightly together, rigidly constraining insulating materials in electrical components can increase their energy density and decrease their rates of failure.

Many electrical components, like wiring, are typically surrounded by a material that keeps the electricity from passing to its surroundings. These insulating materials are known as dielectrics, and can take many forms, with the most common being "soft" materials known as polymers. However, since these dielectrics are constantly being submitted to electrical voltage, they tend to break down.

Duke University engineers have demonstrated that rigidly constraining dielectric materials can greatly improve their performance and potentially lengthen their lifespans. This insight follows their discovery earlier this year of the exact mechanism that causes soft dielectric materials to break down in the presence of electricity.

"We found that increasing voltage can cause polymers to physically crease and even crater at the microscopic level, eventually causing them to break down," said Xuanhe Zhao, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering. "So we thought if we wrapped the polymer tightly, that would prevent this creasing from occurring. Experiments proved this hypothesis to be true."

The results of the Duke study were published online in the journal Applied Physical Letters.

In their experiments, the Duke researchers constrained three different soft polymer dielectrics with epoxy. Epoxy is a type of polymer created by the reaction of a resin with a hardening agent. When mixed, a hard and inflexible coating is formed.

"The rigid epoxy acts as a mechanical constraint," Zhao said. "Since it adheres tightly to the dielectric, it prevents the deformation that would normally occur. We found that this constraint can greatly enhance the ability of the component to carry greater voltage, increasing its energy density by more than ten times."

Zhao said that scientists have been working for years to develop new dielectrics based on new types of soft materials or polymers to increase energy density and solve the problem of breakdown.

"We believe that there can be a drastically different approach to achieving these higher energy-dense soft dielectrics," Zhao said. "Our experiments show that the energy density of these soft materials can be significantly enhanced by proper mechanical constraints of the dielectrics, and not necessarily a new type of dielectric material."

The team is currently testing newer methods for achieving even tighter constraints to increase the energy density of polymer dielectrics.

Panel: Boys should get vaccine for HPV, too

A government panel wants young boys as well as girls to get the controversial HPV vaccine, in part to prevent them from spreading the sexually transmitted virus to girls.

The HPV vaccine has been recommended for young girls to protect them against cervical cancer and genital warts for the last five years. But the vaccine has been slow to catch on ? only about a third of adolescent girls have gotten all three shots.

Experts say the HPV vaccine could protect boys against genital warts and some kinds of cancers. But they also say vaccinating 11- and 12-year old boys could help prevent them from spreading the human papilloma virus to girls.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices made the recommendation Tuesday in a unanimous vote. Federal health officials usually adopt what the panel says and asks doctors and patients to follow the recommendations.

    1. Don't miss these Health stories

      5. Listeria on cantaloupe can't be washed away

The vaccine has been licensed for use in boys for two years but Tuesday's vote was the first to strongly recommend routine vaccination. Officials acknowledged the disappointing rate in girls encouraged them to take a new, hard look.

But if the expensive HPV vaccine has been a tough sell to the parents of girls, it may be even tougher for boys.

Last year, just 49 percent of adolescent girls had gotten at least the first of the recommended three HPV shots. Only a third had gotten all three doses.

"Pretty terrible," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention administrator who oversees the agency's immunization programs.

She attributed the low rates for girls to confusion or misunderstanding by parents that they can wait until their daughter becomes sexually active. It only works if the shots are given before a girl is exposed to the virus, which occurs during sexual activity.

    'Worthwhile vaccine'
CDC experts advised the panel there is no evidence the vaccine can cause "mental retardation," a concern raised by Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann in a Republican presidential candidate debate. The U.S. medical community repudiated Bachmann's claim, which she made as a swipe at a rival, Texas Governor Rick Perry, who issued an executive order in 2007 mandating girls get the HPV vaccine as part of a school immunization program.

    Perry's order was later overturned.

"I think it's a worthwhile vaccine," said Dr. Jay Siwek, a professor of family medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, who was not part of the panel.

Siwek said the only downside of the vaccine is cost, which is $360 for a course of three shots.

In his own practice, Siwek tells parents the vaccine protects against cancers that occur in boys -- mostly mouth and throat -- and it helps protect girls from cancer as well.

"If they have concerns about vaccinating children against a potential sexually transmitted disease in the future, I'd say that we routinely vaccinate kids against diseases that primarily occur in adults," he said.

"I'd also say that most people eventually get HPV infection and that once you get the infection, the vaccine won't help."

The vaccine is approved for use in boys and girls ages 9 to 26; but it is usually given to 11- and 12-year olds when they are scheduled to get other vaccines.

The committee also recommended the vaccination for males 13 through 21 years who have not been vaccinated previously or who have not completed the three-dose series.

HPV shot dilemma: Should gay boys be targeted?

Tuesday's vote follows recent studies that indicate the vaccine prevents anal cancer in males. A study that focused on gay men found it to be 75 percent effective. But while anal cancer has been increasing, it's still a fairly rare cancer in males, with only about 7,000 cases in the U.S. each year that are tied to the strains of viruses targeted in the HPV vaccine. In contrast, about vaccine-preventable 15,000 cervical cancers occur annually.

Some feel it's unlikely that most families will agree to get their sons vaccinated primarily to protect girls. The threat of genital warts hasn't been persuasive yet, either: Some data suggest that less than 1.5 percent of adolescent males have gotten the vaccine.

Its use against anal cancer may not be much of a selling point, said Dr. Ranit Mishori, a family practice doctor in Washington, D.C., and an assistant professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Opinion: HPV vaccine attack could harm ?innocent? girls

Some parents may say "'Why are you vaccinating my son against anal cancer? He's not gay! He's not ever going to be gay!' I can see that will come up," said Mishori, who supports the committee's recommendation.

There are two vaccines against HPV, but Tuesday's vote applies only to Merck & Co.'s Gardasil, which costs $130 a dose. The other vaccine wasn't tested for males.

An estimated 50 percent to 80 percent of men and women are infected with HPV in their lifestimes, although most clear the infection without developing symptoms or illness, according to the CDC.

Grenade attack at Nairobi bar wounds 12: police (Reuters)

NAIROBI (Reuters) ? A grenade attack on a bar in the center of Nairobi early on Monday wounded 12 people, Kenyan police said, an incident that comes as Nairobi battles al Qaeda-linked militants in neighboring Somalia.

Capital news radio quoted a witness who said a man had asked to be let in to the bar shortly after 3 a.m. (0000 GMT), when he hurled a grenade and fled the scene.

"It was a grenade attack. There are no deaths," central Nairobi police chief Eric Mugambi told Reuters, adding that of the 12, two had serious wounds in the leg and the face.

The blast came two days after the U.S. embassy in Kenya warned of an 'imminent threat' of a terrorist attack in Nairobi after the east African country launched a military campaign against Islamist al Shabaab rebels in southern Somalia.

Nairobi blames the militants for a wave of kidnappings of foreigners on Kenyan soil that have threatened the country's multi-million dollar tourism industry.

Al Shabaab had threatened major reprisals if Kenyan troops did not withdraw and the militants have launched large-scale suicide bombings in the past.

No one has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Reuters footage showed blood and beer bottles splattered on the ground of Mwaura's bar, which is frequented by blue-collar laborers attracted by its cheap beer and spirits.

Blood stained a sink and overturned seats and debris littered the floor. Police cordoned off the area as an officer examined damage on the walls from the force of the explosion.

"The guys came out running covered in blood. We helped them wash the blood off and they were carried away by ambulances," Jacob Musembi, a vendor at the scene, told Reuters.

"I'm very scared for my life because I don't know who they'll target next," he said.

A doctor at Kenyatta National Hospital said he had treated 13 people, some with serious wounds, but mostly with light head injuries.

    MILITANTS LAUNCH LARGE-SCALE ATTACKS

Al Shabaab have denied responsibility for the Kenyan kidnappings, saying Nairobi was using them as a pretext for its military campaign.

Kenya has in the past initiated brief cross-border incursions, but the latest operation is on a much larger scale raising fears the country could be dragged into the anarchic Horn of Africa's two-decade-civil war.

The Islamist militants have proven capable of launching large-scale suicide attacks within Somalia and outside and have warned they would bring the "flames of war" into Kenya.

Earlier this month, a suicide truck bombing claimed by the militants killed more than 70 people when it exploded outside a compound housing government ministries in Somalia's capital Mogadishu.

The militants have also claimed responsibility for a bomb attack in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, which killed 79 people last year.

That strike, the militants' first on foreign soil, was in revenge for Uganda's contribution to the 9,000-strong AU peacekeeping force which is supporting Somalia's Western-backed government troops in ousting the rebels out of Mogadishu.

Nairobi is home to a large Somali community and last week security forces arrested two doctors for being members of al Shabaab. The militants also said three of their clerics had been arrested in Kenya, one of whom is on a U.N. sanctions list for recruiting new members and soliciting funds for the rebels.

Al Qaeda struck east Africa in 1998, killing hundreds of people, mostly Africans, in suicide bombing of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Panic! At the Disco Opener Patrick Stump 'Taking No Prisoners'

Ex-Fall Out Boy singer and Panic! tourmate tells MTV News his solo project has 'very punk-rock moments, very Motown moments.'

Patrick Stump might be known to many as the lead singer of Fall Out Boy, but since the band entered an indefinite hiatus nearly two years ago, Stump has been working to create a big name for himself a solo artist. Currently on tour as the opening act for Panic! At the Disco, Stump is doing just that.

"I know a lot of people still haven't heard me as a solo artist," Stump told MTV News. "[My current] band and I are starting to get into this groove where it's like we've really proven it to the immediate people around us, so now it's just going out and taking no prisoners."

Stump has taken the approach of developing a new sound altogether on his first solo studio album, Soul Punk. He said Prince and David Bowie were two of the record's key influences.

"The record itself and the live show: It's really an up-tempo R&B kind of thing," Stump said, describing his new approach. "There are some very punk-rock moments, some very Motown moments."

Already closely associated with Panic! At the Disco through Fall Out bandmate Pete Wentz's efforts at getting them signed in their early days, Stump has seen the pop-punk headliners come a long way.

"When I met them, they felt like our little brothers," Stump said, laughing. "They've long since come into their own, and it's really awesome to get to open for them."

While Stump is out to prove his validity as a solo artist, he knows there is already much to be thankful for: getting to do what he loves most for a living.

"I love being a musician," Stump said, smiling. "I write, and I play, and I think about music all the time. It's really fun to go into rooms with people who don't know what to expect."

'Lone Ranger' Is 'Built Around Tonto,' Director Says

'You've heard the Lone Ranger's story; you just haven't heard it from this guy,' Gore Verbinski tells MTV News.
    By Kara Warner

Now that Disney, Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp have ironed out most of the budget kinks surrounding their production of "The Lone Ranger," we can all rest easy that the masked man and his trusty sidekick Tonto are headed to the big screen soon.

When MTV News caught up with Verbinski at the Hollywood Awards Gala last night, where his quirky animated film "Rango" received the Hollywood Animation Award, we asked how he was feeling about the film and what his plans are for the adaptation.

"I feel great. We're not shooting a Western in the middle of winter; the whole thing is pushed into a more reasonable time of year, so now we have to go make the movie," Verbinski said, speaking to the film's new May 31, 2013, release date. "There's been a lot of talk. Hopefully in a year and a half we'll have something we can talk about."

Verbinski went on to say that he's been hard at work on the screenplay for two years and that the central character is not the Ranger.

"It's all built around Tonto," he said. "You've heard the Lone Ranger's story; you just haven't heard it from this guy. He was there."

Depp has already teased that their take on the beloved duo's western adventures will be "interesting," to say the least.

"I like the character. I think I have interesting plans for the character, and I think the film itself could be entertaining and very funny," he said. "But also I like the idea of having the opportunity to make fun of the idea of the Indian as a sidekick — which has always been [the case] throughout the history of Hollywood. The Native American has always been a second-class, third-class, fourth-class citizen, and I don't see Tonto that way at all. So it's an opportunity for me to salute Native Americans."

The end of the line for fancy Steuben crystal

In a memorable Hollywood scene from "Risky Business," the 1983 comedy drama that launched Tom Cruise to stardom, a mother's prized Steuben glass egg goes missing from the mantelpiece only to reappear ? imperceptibly nicked ? in the nick of time.

Steuben Glass, an American icon of handcrafted crystal for over a century, looks now as if it's vanishing for good.

Its lone factory in Corning, a glassmaking company town flanked by Steuben County's tree-topped mountain ridges in southwestern New York, is shutting down Nov. 29, the week after Thanksgiving. With profitability elusive at the best of times, the prospects of reviving the 108-year-old vanity brand seem every bit as slim.

While the matchlessly transparent glass is still acclaimed as the lodestar of lead crystal, Steuben has struggled to find its footing in old age ? never more so than since 2008 when glass pioneer Corning Inc. sold the ailing business to Schottenstein Stores Corp., a retail-chain operator in Columbus, Ohio.

Topping the list of critics' complaints: Uninspiring new designs, the addition of cheaper engraving methods and, for the first time in its history, a production shift overseas that squeezed the price of simpler ornaments and champagne glasses below an unheard-of $100 each.

"They totally lost their way," sniffed Jeff Purtell, a Steuben dealer in Portsmouth, N.H. "If your design department is pathetic, your costs are prohibitive, and your marketing ? and vision for the future ? is not successful, then you're doomed whether you're making Steuben glass or Twinkies."

A generation-long slide in demand for fine crystal accelerated abruptly when the financial crisis hit Wall Street in September 2008, just weeks after Schottenstein bought 80 percent of Steuben for an undisclosed price.

The operator of budget-friendly Value City Furniture and DWS shoe stores scrambled to appeal to more economically diverse markets ? just as other hard-pressed crystal titans like Baccarat, Orrefors and Waterford Glass have done in Europe ? but Steuben never turned a profit, said company spokesman Ron Sykes.

"The economy collapsed, so there wasn't great demand even from collectors," Sykes said. "We studied others that tiered their product and had some moderate success. Bottom line is, it did not work for us."

Some factories are hiring, but not like they used to

Most of the factory's 60 workers will be axed, and Steuben's flagship store in New York will close once its inventory is sold off, Sykes said. Corning, which is expected to rehire more than a dozen union employees, bought back the Steuben brand but held out little hope it might re-enter the crystal arena.

Since 1903, Steuben glass has been fashioned into everything from fruit bowls and decorative animal figurines to one-of-a-kind sculptures bestowed as official gifts of American presidents from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton. Art objects can cost tens of thousands of dollars, with classic pieces creeping into six figures.

"I often wondered why the last generation, maybe two, cut down on Steuben," mused collector Thomas Dimitroff. "The young folks don't want it. Same thing with silver. There's a different attitude. Every year we're getting further away from the Victorian love of clutter, quality or not."

Hundreds of Steuben pieces swarm shelves, tables and cabinets throughout Dimitroff's home. He traces his fascination to his teens in the 1950s when he accompanied his father, a doctor, on visits to company founder Frederick Carder's home. Carder, who died in 1963 at age 100, never failed to show his gratitude to his physician.

"Every time Mr. Carder said to my dad, now take a piece of my glass, any glass you want. My dad would never take one, and now I wish I could yell at him!"

Like fine diamonds, clear-as-water Steuben (pronounced stew-'BEN) seems almost to emanate light from within. Depending on how it's worked, it can reflect or refract the entire spectrum of a ray of light.

Other hallmarks are its elegant, naturally flowing shapes ? and eye-popping price tags. While largely confined to the wealthy, Steuben long lured up-and-comers willing to set aside a small fortune to possess a dining-room centerpiece or splurge on a wedding gift for a favorite niece.

Even before being sold by Corning, which was almost continuously steered from 1851 to 2005 by five generations of the highbrow Houghton family, historians worried Steuben's uncompromising dedication to perfection of materials, craftsmanship and design might someday be sacrificed if profitmaking became primary.

"If you took away the understanding that it might never make money and sold it to somebody for whom it had to make money, that was the beginning of the end," said Mary Jean Madigan, author of "Steuben Glass: An American Tradition in Crystal."

"Little by little, Steuben changed over some decades," Madigan said. "It began to change a lot right about the time of the centennial in 2003 when it became clear Corning would expect it to be run as a business and not so much as the historical purveyor of fine crystal it had been. What it is now is not what it used to be in terms of what is made, how it's marketed and who's buying it."

Steuben got its start when Carder, an English designer, agreed to run a glass-engraving shop in exchange for the freedom of creating decorative glass. His richly hued creations turned him into a giant of the glass arts scene alongside Louis Comfort Tiffany and Rene Lalique.

The Houghtons, a dynasty of arts patrons, bought out Carder in 1918, but as popular taste turned less ornate, Steuben almost collapsed during the 1930s Great Depression.

Corning scientists came up with an exciting new formula ? a colorless heavy-lead optical glass ? and marketing maestro Arthur Houghton Jr. propelled Steuben into a name of distinction. He staged exhibitions by leading contemporary artists such as Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keeffe and Salvador Dali, opened a retail store on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue and advertised in all the best magazines.

As well as signature household items, the ads showcased limited-edition pieces such as an arctic fisherman poised on the ice, preparing to spear his catch.

Few enterprises demanded such a high rate of artistry. A stable of specialists employed both innovative and ancient techniques as the crystal moved from 2,500-degree Fahrenheit furnaces through blowing, grinding, polishing, etching and other precision processes.

While Steuben didn't always contribute to profits, it burnished Corning's reputation as an industrial glassmaker with an appreciation for ancient traditions of using glass as an art form. The business hit its peak a half-century ago when it employed nearly 300 people.

Old-timers like Max Erlacher, a master engraver who underwent a seven-year apprenticeship in his native Austria, are aghast at how a beloved company has fallen.

"When I first came here in 1957, it was just a shining star," he said. "Other companies like Baccarat of France did fabulous glass and still do, but they never had that quality of engraving. But even they're going downhill because they don't have the clientele."

In his studio near Corning, the 78-year-old carries on an 18th-century tradition that has few peers, using dozens of fine copper wheels attached to a lathe to create exquisite engravings.

After Houghton retired in 1973, "Steuben didn't have the same spirit, the understanding of what it takes to create a piece of art, translate it into glass and market it the right way to discerning audiences."

In the 1990s, as Corning moved out of consumer glassware into high-tech arenas like fiber optics and LCD television monitors, Steuben began to shrink. It lost money in 17 of its last 20 years under Corning, including $5.7 million in 2007. Sales dipped below $25 million a year. Corning outsourced stemware production to Germany around 2003 ? and Schottenstein later turned for glassmaking help in Portugal.

Eric Hilton, a Steuben consultant for 35 years who designed elaborate sculptures given as U.S. tokens of friendship to queens, popes and heads of state worldwide, sees "a definite void with the passing of all that craft and skill" and remains puzzled by "the shift in the appreciation of beautiful objects."

"Steuben fell down a bit when they started getting the stuff made abroad," he said. "It didn't come back quite right at times. Whereas if it was made totally in the Corning factory, it wouldn't go out the door until it was utterly perfect. We used to think, 'For goodness sakes, we're whipping ourselves to death!'"

On a brighter note, dealers expect the vibrant aftermarket in Steuben collectibles to pick up pace. "Tiffany art glass hasn't been made since the 1930s, and the desirability did not diminish, it's increased," Purtell said.

Kutcher and Cryer locked lips on Monday night's "Men."

    By Ree Hines

Just who Ashton Kutcher may or may not be kissing off-screen has been the stuff of tabloid talk? for weeks, but on Monday night?s episode of ?Two and a Half Men,? there was no doubt about the actor?s latest lip-lock partner. It was none other than his prime-time co-star Jon Cryer.

The unexpected, affectionate act took place after a woman established just how uninterested she was in Kutcher's on-screen alter ego, Walden, by kissing her gal pal. Walden returned the sentiment by smooching his roomie, Alan.

Waldens?s antics, which so far have included a couple of nude scenes and the aforementioned just-for-kicks kiss, get plenty of attention, but are they enough to keep viewers tuning in the new Charlie-Sheen-free ?Men??

Atletico Madrid draws 1-1 with Mallorca in Spain

    By JOSEPH WILSON

    Associated Press

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 4:33 p.m. ET Oct. 23, 2011

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Roberto Soldado's late goal salvaged a 1-1 draw for Valencia against Athletic Bilbao, while Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 with Mallorca on Sunday in the Spanish league.

After an evenly matched first half with both team hitting the post, Iker Muniain scored Bilbao's 72nd-minute opener when he deftly dribbled across the edge of the area before shooting powerfully into the right corner of the net.

Bilbao appeared set to record its third straight league win before Soldado reached Ever Banega's pass, beat goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz with one touch and rolled home the equalizer in the 89th for his sixth goal of the season.

The game saw Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales and Bilbao veteran Carlos Gurpegi both helped off the pitch with leg injuries.

In Madrid, visitors Mallorca went ahead two minutes in through Israel striker Tomer Hemed's fourth spot kick in the last three matches.

Radamel Falcao pulled Atletico even at Vicente Calderon stadium with a penalty of his own in the 42nd after he was fouled in the area to break a three-game scoring drought for his team in league play.

"It wasn't in our plans to draw today," said Atletico coach Gregorio Manzano, whose team extended its winless streak to four games in league play. "It was a tough game for us. We were facing a well-organized defense that left us very few spaces."

It was Mallorca's second consecutive draw since coach Joaquin Caparros took over following the stormy departure of Michael Laudrup.

Also, Osasuna beat Zaragoza 3-0, Rayo Vallecano scored twice late to down Real Betis 2-0 and Getafe drew 0-0 at Real Sociedad.

Osasuna needed half an hour to decide the contest at Reyno de Navarra stadium.

Raul Garcia set Osasuna on its way to its first win in six games in the 18th before flicking on a throw-in for Juan "Nino" Martinez to finish off in nine minutes later.

Iran midfielder Javad Nekounam put the victory beyond doubt in the 30th when he headed in Nino's cross.

In Sevilla, Betis failed to convert a number of scoring chances, and Rayo's Lass Bangoura capped his strong performance in the 80th minute when he coolly chipped Betis goalkeeper Casto Barriga.

"Lass is a player who is giving his all for this team and adapting very well," said Rayo coach Jose Sandoval about the 19-year-old Guinean winger.

Sergio Contreras then sealed Betis' fourth straight loss in the 88th from the penalty spot.

Levante can move ahead of overnight leader Real Madrid with a sixth consecutive win at Villarreal in the late game after Valencia hosts Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona was held to a 0-0 draw by Sevilla on Saturday, letting Madrid provisionally take a one-point lead atop the table after Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick in its 4-0 win at big-spending Malaga.

Sporting Gijon also beat Granada 2-0 for its first win of the season, while Sergio Garcia's second-half goal dropped winless Racing Santander into last place as Espanyol won 1-0 for its second straight away victory.

    The nation's weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011.

Most of the nation was expected to see drier conditions on Saturday, as a mild weather pattern set up. A ridge of high pressure over the Plains was expected to advance eastward and continue building. The leading edge of this system was expected continue pushing cold air into the East, allowing for below seasonable temperatures to move over the Ohio River Valley and into the Northeast and New England.

Daytime highs were expected to range in the 50s and 60s, while overnight lows were forecast into the 30s and 40s. Frost and freeze advisories were expected to remain in effect for the Eastern third of the nation.

Meanwhile, in the West, a low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska continued pushing multiple disturbances into British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, continuing to produce scattered rain showers across Oregon and Washington. As this system pushed in some cool air it was expected to produce wintry precipitation for the Cascades. The first of these disturbances was expected to make its way over the Northern Rockies and into the Northern Plains on Saturday. This was expected to trigger a few light and scattered showers over the region. To the south, high pressure slowly was expected to build over California and create a moderate warming trend for the Southwest. Dangerous fire weather conditions return to California and the Great Basin, due to offshore flow creating a dry and warm environment.

Dina Lohan Looks to Sell Out Lindsay in Memoir

Apparently Dina Lohan sucks even worse than originally believed.

It's not like we had a strong opinion of her to begin with, but the fact that Lindsay Lohan's mom is trying to expose her own daughter's secrets - blowing the lid off of LiLo's alleged drug and alcohol use in a new memoir - is reprehensible.

Lindsay has been a colossal mess and we will continue to call her out for it, but Dina's actions explain a lot, and actually make her daughter look sympathetic.

    Lindsay Walks, Dina Creeps

As Lindsay walks to court in a full-body condom, leech Dina lurks behind.

As recently as last week, with Lindsay looking down the barrel of another jail sentence, Dina Lohan's been hawking her lame memoir around town.

"I blamed her friends, her career and her handlers for an (sic) newfound life of partying excessively," says an excerpt, according to TMZ. "Drinking, drugging and behaving irresponsibly became Lindsay's way of daily living."

"It just tore me up inside."

We'd like to tear her a new one after reading this drivel.

"How could I deny my daughter the chance of a lifetime? Could I hold Lindsay back from her dream of becoming an actress? No, I listened to others and sent my daughter to Hollywood with a few pieces of luggage and a chaperone."

When Lindsay began acting crazy, piling up mug shots and what not, Dina says she was helpless, claiming she couldn't demand Lindsay return to N.Y.

Dina also admits she was conflicted since she was both Lindsay's parent and manager ... not that the idiot chose to back away from the money train.

That's what it's all about, right? Dina and her rep were soliciting meetings via email this month, to brainstorm how to make her book "a best seller."

TMZ sources say a ghost writer actually wrote the prologue after long sit-downs with Dina Lohan and her rep, and both were disgustingly on board.

As far as we know ... so far, no takers. Thank goodness.

    Turning hard times into harmony

    By George Lewis, NBC News

A Los Angeles woman received the Presidential Citizens Medal Thursday for her work with children from the city's gang-infested neighborhoods. NBC's George Lewis reports.

Dr. Margaret Martin's enthusiasm and passion are infectious.? "We're saving kids' lives!" she proclaims.

Because of her, 1,500 youngsters from the gang-infested neighborhoods of Los Angeles are off the streets and spending their spare time in youth orchestras sponsored by the Harmony Project, which she started a decade ago. Kids accepted into the program are given free musical tutoring and instruments, provided they sign a contract that they will finish school and not drop out. On Thursday, President Obama awarded a Presidential Citizen's Medal to Martin, one of 13 Americans to receive the 2011 award.

"Our students learn discipline, persistence, confidence, accountability for the use of their time," Martin said, "and they learn to collaborate well with others in an ensemble."

Those students agree. "The music really made me focus more in school and made me concentrate," said Harmony Project violinist Andrea Garcia during a break in a Saturday practice session, "it releases my stress and I don't get angry as much."

Mizael Reyes, another violinist, chimed in. "I know that you have to put effort into music so I have to put effort into everything else if I want to accomplish anything," he said.

The temptations for kids living in gang neighborhoods are being challenged - with success - by a program called Harmony Project. Here, students talk about the program and how its keeping them off the streets.

Margaret Martin knows about hard times.? She said that as a young mother, she walked out of an abusive marriage and lived for a time in an empty office building.?

Gesturing toward herself, Martin said, "This is the face of poverty in the United States."

After she turned her own life around and earned a Ph.D. in public health, Martin resolved to give something back. And then something happened that inspired her.

She started Harmony Project, she said, because she saw a group of gang members stop at a farmer's market in front of a child playing Brahms on a violin.

That little kid was Martin's young son Max, trying to earn a few extra dollars as a sidewalk musician. At first she was scared that the gang members would try to harm him, but then she noticed they were entranced by the music and began digging into their pockets, putting money in Max's violin case.

"In that moment," she said, "they were teaching me that they would rather be doing what that kid was doing than what they were doing but they never had the chance."

Giving youngsters that chance is what drives the Harmony Project and its highly passionate, highly articulate founder.

One woman's solution to keeping kids out of gangs... create harmony. Here's more of George Lewis's interview with Margaret Martin, founder of Harmony Project.

"Kids will rise to the level of your expectations," Martin said.? "You just have to have great expectations, and they do.? They are precious resources."

She has acquired a powerful ally in Gustavo Dudamel, the conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the product of the youth orchestra program in his native Venezuela.

"We couldn't do what we do without the support of our partners," Martin said.

Now, the woman who turned hard times into harmony hopes to replicate the project in other cities.? And she's having fun?planning the expansion.

"It IS a lot of fun," she said, "It's the best job ever!"

Eurozone to banks: Take bigger loss on Greek debt (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Eurozone finance ministers agreed that banks should accept bigger losses on their Greek bonds but would not say Saturday how large the writedowns would be.

The move is a key step in helping Athens eventually dig out from underneath its debt burden. But asking banks to more significantly write down their Greek debt will raise concerns about their ability to withstand the losses. As a result, EU ministers meeting in Brussels are also expected to force the banks to raise billions in capital for their rainy-day funds.

Both measures are critical to solving Europe's debt crisis, which is now threatening to engulf larger economies like Italy and Spain and is blamed for dampening growth across Europe and even the world.

"The crisis in the eurozone is doing real damage to many of the European economies, including Britain," George Osborne, Britain's chancellor of the exchequer, said as he headed into Saturday's meeting. "We have had enough of short-term measures, sticking plasters that get us through the next few weeks."

European leaders had promised just such a solution would come from a summit on Sunday, but they have now scheduled another one for Wednesday. Still, this weekend, they appeared to be making progress.

And a not a moment too soon: A new report from Greece's international debt inspectors said Athens won't be able to raise money on financial markets until 2021 unless it is allowed to write off more of its debt load.

In July, banks had tentatively agreed to take a loss of about 21 percent on Greek bonds. But if that percentage doesn't increase, the inspectors said the country will need as much as euro252 billion ($350 billion) in new loans through 2020, according to the report, which was given to the ministers on Friday and seen by The Associated Press.

To avoid having to pour more money into Greece, finance ministers from the 17 countries that use the euro have agreed that the banks need to take on more losses.

"Yesterday we agreed that we need a substantial increase in the contribution from the banks," said Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg's prime minister who also chairs the meetings of eurozone finance ministers.

Austrian Finance Minister Maria Fekter said the eurozone's chief negotiator with banks had been asked to restart those discussions.

Juncker would not say how big the contribution would be, but Germany is pushing to have Greece's private creditors take losses of 50 percent to 60 percent

According to the report, Greece's debt will peak at 186 percent of GDP in 2013 and only decline to 152 percent by the end of 2020. Germany wants that brought down to 120 percent of GDP.
