PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) -- In the midst of a recent cold snap, Pawtucket?s Animal Control is clamping down on delinquent pet owners.
These bone chilling temperatures can be painful for pets as well; therefore Animal Control Officers are taking action so pets won?t have to suffer through the cold.?
"If it's too cold for you outside, then it's too cold for your animal,? said Pawtucket Animal Control Supervisor John Holmes.
Holmes assigns crews to be on the lookout for distressed animals and if necessary remove them and take them to the Pawtucket Animal Shelter where they can get better treatment. So far this winter, crews have not had to remove any pets, but they are still prepared for the worst.
"Our vehicles are equipped with blankets. They're equipped with jugs of water. To make sure the animals have proper water,? he said.
Animal Control officers say they take their job very seriously, because if animals are mistreated in cold weather, there can be unfortunate consequences.
"Naturally, you concern yourself with hypothermia. If a dog becomes slow moving, if the body temperature drops on the dog the dog can be in distress," said Holmes.
Holmes was shocked to hear about a recent incident in Warwick where someone dumped a dog at an animal shelter in the middle of the night. He is hoping to get legislation passed in Rhode Island that would require owners to put their pets inside when temperatures drop below freezing.
