Productivity Commission chairman Gary Banks will retire from his position in December, federal Treasurer Wayne Swan says.
In a joint statement with Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury, Mr Swan thanked Mr Banks for his years of dedicated public service and commitment to the work at the commission.
"Mr Banks has demonstrated exceptional ability and leadership in heading up the commission over the past 15 years," he said.
The treasurer said under Mr Banks' guidance the commission had grown into a world-renowned institution and a leading example of independent policy advising based on sound evidence and evaluation.
Mr Banks has overseen a wide range of nationally significant inquiries and been a guiding force behind many major microeconomic reforms in recent times.
These included the evaluation of the National Competition Policy reforms and recommending major changes to Australia's aged and disability care systems.
He is also co-chairing a joint study with the New Zealand Productivity Commission aimed at strengthening economic relations between the two countries.
Mr Swan said the selection process for Mr Banks' replacement will begin shortly.
