During 1958, one of the most important breakthroughs in computer history occurred, the creation of the integrated circuit. This device, also known as the chip, is one of the base requirements for modern computer systems. On every motherboard and card within a computer system, are many chips that contain information on what the boards and cards do. Without these chips, the systems as we know them today cannot function.

Gaming, Mice, & the Internet

For many computer users now, games are a vital part of the computing experience. 1962 saw the creation of the first computer game, which was created by Steve Russel and MIT, which was dubbed Spacewar.

$1M-plus Chinese cups tops for 'Antiques Roadshow' (AP)

NEW YORK ? An Oklahoma man has more than a million reasons to be happy he brought his collection of Chinese rhinoceros horned cups to be appraised by experts with the PBS series "Antiques Roadshow."

PBS says the collection was judged Saturday by Asian art expert Lark Mason at a taping in Tulsa, Okla., to be worth $1 million to $1.5 million. That's easily the most valuable item brought in for appraisal in the history of "Antiques Roadshow," which will air its 16th season next year.

Show spokeswoman Judy Matthews says the collection owner was surprised by the appraisal and quipped, "I guess I won't have to rely on Social Security anymore." The owner wishes to remain anonymous.

Matthews says there's a hot market now for Chinese art.

ST. LOUIS ? The Houston Astros' cleanup hitter is starting to act the part.

Carlos Lee made things interesting with his 16th career grand slam, homering for the second straight game in a 10-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Lee has a dozen seasons with 24 or more homers but has only nine this year, but is 10-for-25 with nine RBIs the last seven games.

"I'm feeling good at the plate, hitting the ball hard," Lee said. "I hope I'm coming around and can keep driving the ball."

The Astros trailed 8-1 before Lee connected in the eighth off P.J. Walters, cutting the gap to three runs before St. Louis answered with two runs. He's tied for ninth on the career list with Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Dave Kingman and second on the active list, trailing only Alex Rodriguez' 21.

Since hitting .194 in April, Lee is batting .313 with seven homers and 42 RBIs in 70 games.

"It was great to see it," manager Brad Mills said. "He kept battling the whole at-bat."

Lee is 2-for-2 against Walters, both grand slams, also connecting on July 21, 2009 in Houston.

"I didn't know that. For real?" Lee said. "That's crazy, but that's the game."

Slow-footed catcher Yadier Molina was a triple shy of the cycle for the second time in three games and Kyle McClellan ended an eight-game victory drought for the Cardinals.

The Astros' Hunter Pence suffered his second fielding gaffe in as many games, handing Nick Punto a gift RBI triple in the second after misjudging a routine fly, appearing to lose the ball in lights and then stumbling. It wasn't clear whether new turf, replaced after a U2 concert eight days earlier, played a role.

"We'll deal with it," Mills said. "We're not thrilled with it. You want the sure footing and so forth, but it wasn't there. And it cost us a little bit."

Colby Rasmus, the Cardinals' player mentioned most in rumors heading into the trade deadline, homered for the second straight day with three RBIs.

Molina has three career triples in 897 career at-bats and missed his only shot for the cycle when he took a called third strike from Mark Melancon in the eighth. He's 6-for-12 with two homers and five RBIs his last three games and his eighth homer, matching his career single-season best from 2005, came in the fourth off J.A. Happ (4-12).

McClellan (7-6) was the first National League pitcher to get to six victories after working eight strong innings in a 4-2 victory over the Astros at home on May 19 and finally made it to No. 7 after working seven strong innings. The right-hander had been 0-4 with a 5.48 ERA the previous seven starts, all St. Louis losses.

The first-year starter allowed one run on six hits and walked none and has won all three of his outings against the Astros.

Happ surrendered five or more runs for the sixth straight start, and has given up five or more runs in half of his eight career starts against the Cardinals. He's also 1-7 with a 8.02 ERA on the road this season.

Pence leads the National League with nine assists and was the Astros' lone All-Star, but has struggled lately.

On Sunday, Pence said he was blinded by the sun on Marlon Byrd's leadoff triple, which should have been a routine play, in the 10th inning of the Cubs' 5-4 victory. He came in on Punto's fly ball, then appeared blinded by lights on a hit that put St. Louis up 2-1.

In the eighth, Pence apparently believed he had caught Ryan Theriot's fly ball for the third out, running several steps before finally throwing late to third as Punto took the extra base.

Punto scored on what appeared to be a busted squeeze play, and was halfway down the line when McClellan swung away and grounded out to second for an RBI that made it 3-1.

The Astros have lost four in a row and are a major-league worst 33-69, going 10-35 since June 2. A bright spot was rookie Jose Altuve, who had three hits and has hit safely in all five career starters.

The 21-year-old Altuve began the year at Class A Lancaster and at the time of his callup led all minor leaguers with a .389 average.

Clarke holds nerve to seal Open Championship triumph (AFP)

SANDWICH (AFP) ? Darren Clarke held his nerve to clinch victory at the Open Championship here Sunday, becoming the oldest winner of the championship in 44 years as he ended his long wait for a Major.

The popular 42-year-old from Northern Ireland kept his cool in demanding conditions to card a level-par 70, leaving him five under for the tournament and three strokes clear of Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson.

"It's been a dream since I've been a kid to win The Open, like any kid's dream is, and I'm able to do it, which just feels incredible, incredible right now," Clarke told reporters.

The win capped a final round of twists and turns at Royal St George's, where wild fluctuations in the weather were mirrored early on by a fast-moving battle at the top of the leaderboard before Clarke's rivals fell away.

It also represented a triumph of persistence for the paunchy, cigarette-smoking Clarke, who finally claimed the famous Auld Claret jug at the 20th time of asking, a new record.

Clarke, whose ranking has slipped to 111 in recent years, becomes the oldest winner of the Open since Argentina's Roberto de Vicenzo won aged 44 in 1967.

Many observers had assumed that Clarke's days of challenging for Majors were over, with the veteran Ulsterman seemingly destined to forever rue his near-miss at the 1997 Open at Troon, where he tied for second.

But Clarke insisted he never doubted his ability to eventually win a Major.

"You know, bad times in golf are more frequent than the good times," he said. "There's times I've been completely and utterly fed up with the game.

"But friends and family say, get out there and practice and keep going, keep going, keep going, and that's why I'm sitting here now."

Clarke also paid tribute to his late wife Heather, with whom he had two sons, who died in 2006 from breast cancer.

"In terms of what's going through my heart, there's obviously somebody who is watching down from up above there, and I know she'd be very proud of me," he said. "She'd probably be saying, 'I told you so.'

"But I think she'd be more proud of my two boys and them at home watching more than anything else. It's been a long journey to get here. But I've got here in the end."

Clarke had started Sunday's final round with a one-shot advantage over Johnson, who was desperate to atone for suffering two agonising near-misses at last year's US Open and US PGA Championship.

Yet for long periods of a thrilling final 18 holes, it looked as if three-time Major winner Mickelson would pose the most serious threat.

Mickelson, who had started the day five behind Clarke, produced a dazzling putting display over the front nine to wipe out the Ulsterman's lead and join him at the top of the leaderboard on five under.

Mickelson reeled in Clarke with three birdies and an eagle to go out in five-under-par courtesy of some red-hot putting, and he might have had another had a birdie putt not lipped out at the eighth.

But Clarke then hit back with a 20-foot eagle putt of his own on the par-five seventh to move to seven-under and move two clear of Mickelson, setting the stage for a nail-biting climax over the back nine.

Mickelson closed to within one of Clarke after holing another long-range putt from 18 feet at the 10th for birdie.

Yet just as it seemed that the momentum was with the 41-year-old from California, Mickelson's flawless putting deserted him with bogeys on the 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th.

He eventually carded a two-under-par 68, leaving him two under for the tournament, three behind Clarke.

Mickelson's implosion left Clarke's playing partner Johnson as the man best placed to end American golf's long wait for a Major.

Johnson rolled in an eight-footer on the 12th for birdie to move within two shots of Clarke. But when the 27-year-old from South Carolina crashed his ball out of bounds par-five 14th, it was all over.

Johnson's double-bogey seven put Clarke four strokes ahead with four holes to play, and from there the result was never in doubt as he came home to roars from the thousands packing the grandstands around the last.

Clarke's victory was the third by a golfer from Northern Ireland in a Major tournament in just over a year, following Rory McIlroy's triumph at the US Open last month, an event won by Graeme McDowell 12 months earlier.

It also extended American golf's record Major losing streak to six. The last US golfer to claim a Major was Mickelson at the 2010 Masters.

Meanwhile pre-tournament favourite McIlroy concluded an unhappy Open with a three-over-par 73 to finish seven over for the tournament.

McIlroy, 22, later blamed the variable weather for undermining his challenge.

"I'm not a fan of golf tournaments that the outcome is predicted so much by the weather. It's not my sort of golf," McIlroy said.
