I recently attended the Madeleine Albright exhibit ?Read My Pins?. It showcases her collection of over 300 pins or brooches that? became her Diplomatic Signature. And it?s all because of Saddam Hussein.

Albright, then the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations criticized Hussein.? In return, his poet in residence called her ?an unparalleled serpent?.

Shortly after, she had to meet with Iraqi officials and wondered what to wear?

Always a fan of pins, she decided to make a statement by wearing a snake pin.? Her message: ?Don?t Tread on Me?.

From that day forward her pins became part of her diplomatic signature ?brand?.? She used pins to emphasize the importance of a negotiation, signify high hopes, show compassion and express pride in America.

Albright?s pins were an important indicator of her diplomatic mood. Fellow diplomats and world leaders paid attention to the pin she was wearing on each occasion.? In fact, prior to a meeting Russian President Putin told President Clinton ?We always watch what pins Secretary Albright is wearing.?
