This summer, community leaders in Marion are putting their heads together to figure out how to teach kids good habits so they grow up to be healthy adults.
A statewide body mass index study by the Ohio Department of Health shows 35 percent of children in kindergarten and grades 3, 5 and 9 are overweight or obese. And 45 percent of Marion County children in grades 3, 5 and 9 are overweight or obese, according to a study by Marion Public Health.
Pioneering Healthy Communities in Marion is leading a community discussion and viewing of HBO?s ?The Weight of the Nation? from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Marion Technical College. Creating Healthy Communities also will take part.
The state BMI study was a result of Ohio Senate Bill 210, The Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Act.
According to the Ohio Department of Health, the law has provisions to combat childhood obesity in the next several years by increasing students? physical activity, ensuring access to healthy meals and beverages at school and establishing a BMI and weight status category screening program for students in kindergarten and grades 3, 5 and 9.
